Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Oooops. Sorry. Must have just imagined.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

perenially me, I'd love the lilium martagon (turk's cap) purple!!!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Do any of you have Snow on the Mountain (Euphorbia marginata)? I love that old fashioned stuff, and it does look snowy and cool among other plants. Anything our grandmothers may have grown tickles my fancy.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

I have an older pack that I could find for you.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

It's yours Danita. Will update later or I'll run out of edits.
(the purple martagon, that is)

I too, think i will be out there just before a big snow fall, sprinkling Poppies.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

I just updated my promised seed list, so make sure I've got all your wishes down.

I also added some older (2002 -2004) commercial packs that someone gave me that I don't need. Check out my Have List:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5785279

Just a note...When you update/edit your Have & Wish lists, make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the post and delete out all the old update messages (like "This message was edited Nov 15, 2008 4:23 PM".) It just clears up some clutter on an already overwhelming thread! :)

How likely are the 2002-2004 or '05 vintage commercial seeds to be viable? I found a bunch of those in a drawer, but thought they probably weren't any good. Haven't thrown them out yet, so if anybody might be interested, I could list them.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

Many seeds stay viable for much longer than people think. No guarantees, but my guess is that maybe 50 percent of the seeds per pack would still be viable. I'd be sending a full pack so they can be sown really thickly to compensate for any "duds." They're free so it's worth the gamble, I think.

I didn't include any that I knew had an extremely short shelf life.

After all, scientists have grown plants from seeds that they found in the Egyptian pyramids! Seeds are amazing! :)

Oh, forgot to mention... As long as the seeds weren't kept in a really hot area like a shed. That kills them fast.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've been away most of the day but am back online for a bit... ran out of edits this morning, so couldn't update my posts!

Fairy, sorry about that... looks like one of the edits I thought I'd made didn't go through. I've got you down for the Hot & Spicy basil and the Bolivian Rainbow pepper, and I've got RatherB down for Burgundy Gaillardia.

Terese and Frausnow, those balloon flowers are lovely! And they look pretty much like the "blue" ones I have, so I think I'll let somebody else claim those seeds. (Hmm, how did I just now think that I should check my little balloon flowers for seeds... after all, they bloomed, and I'll bet I didn't deadhead them... possible that I even marked which ones were white, LOL.)

Frausnow, I don't think I had any Red Hot Poker on my list. ?

Winterville, GA(Zone 8a)

Critterologist.....ooops, sorry! The request for Kniphofia uvaria Red Hot Poker was meant for CordeleDawg! LOL

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

regarding Balloon Flowers... I've read they could take up to 3 yrs to bloom.... BUT i WS'ed some seeds this past season... and i did get 1 bloom on this tiny little plant. I think the plant stayed so small because it was sorta 'swallowed' up by larger plants.

anyone else get first year blooms on this plant?

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Same here except I got about 3 different ones with a single flower. : )

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

tcs - can you put me down for some Asclepias curassavica, scarlet & silky. Thanks!
~chele

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Danita, thanks for the seed-life info. Which seeds have a very short shelf-life?

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I got 2nd year blooms on my balloon flower this year-nothin last year...

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

FWIW -- I'm down to ONE packet of Asclepias curassavica Silky.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

perenniallyme,

Here's a list that gives some idea.
http://www.hillgardens.com/seed_longevity.htm

However, it does depend on many factors and each seed is an individual. Some will survive longer than others in the same pack.

Even though that list says salvia seed last for only 1 year, I've grown salvia seeds that were 5 years old and gotten at least 80 percent germination. I think the trick is to give them a pre-soak in warm water overnight. I do that with all my salvias anyway and it gives 100 percent germination with fresh seeds and they come up evenly which makes it easier to care for them.

BTW, I'll only be sending in the old packs if someone asks for them.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I just wanted to mention I've had the same kind of first year flowering from Maltese Cross - low growing plants that had a few tiny flowers here and there but no where near what they looked like the second. I think I've had it with others as well, just can't think of any off the top of my head. It's funny that you brought that up tcs. I was just thinking today that it would be nice if we could have a resource on dg for making lists like that. Which seeds germinate easily on the counter, which take 3 years to flower or only 1,and can be grown equally as well as an annual, etc. etc. I know it would have made my life easier if I had access to lists like that when I first started trying to grow from seeds.

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

Okay, not one person has asked for my Seahore Mallow and I think this is one of the cutest plants. It's a perennial that blooms a long time in the summer, various pollinators love it, and it is easy to grow in average soil or moist areas.

Don't you want one? :)

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Danita! Guess I'll do the same, but maybe I'll first check and see if you're getting any oinks for yours.

Gemini, I have snow on the mountain growing here and can save you seed for next season or send you plants in the spring if you would like. I must say, once you put it somewhere it takes over and you can never get it out. It is old-fashioned and beautiful though, I do love it too. JLMK if you're interested; sorry I don't have any avail. seeds right now.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

starlight, I only water mine occasionally and they did fine even with the drought. They just stay a little shorter in drier soils. They are native to the USA southeastern coast so they are well adapted to the heat and humidity.

Putting your name on one! ;)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

is a Mallow and a Malva almost the same thing?

When i googled Malva, a link to Daves Zebra Mallow / French Holly Hock came up .

I have a baggie that stated, Malva [Pink] -- any ideas?

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Danita I thought about asking for some because I am not sure if they will survive winter here yet. I am thinking they probably will, so far I've had good luck with a lot of plants that only have a hardiness rating of 6. However, you never know what mother nature is going to deal out until she deals : ) I just wanted to say to anyone that gets it, that mine 'almost' flowered the first year from seed. Almost all the plants had budded out and one was even barely starting to crack open and show some pink. Then bam! the frost wiped them out. : ( I was so excited checking them evryday for at least a month. Hopefully mine really are seashore mallow I didn't buy them so you can't be 100% sure until they flower. At least not if you've never seen them in person, perrhaps you could look at a pic of my seedlings and tell me if you think that's what I have. I am just going to give the link to my journal on it because there are two pics in there, one of them with their first leaves and one of them in fall budded out. p.l.m.k. what you think : ) http://davesgarden.com/tools/journal/viewentry.php?rid=173014

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

Danita - I'd hate to think that you have poor little seeds needing a home. :-) I actually didn't think they were hardy this far north - but pf says they are and I LOVE that pink color! Write my name down too!
~chele

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I think of malva as being related to hollyhock, but with many more much smaller flowers instead of fewer big ones.

PS Also smaller plants

Danita - anything else you can sell us "northern" people? :-) Sometimes I get envious of everything you can grow that we can't.....then fall hits and I'm in love.
