Oi! She keeps posting pix of that Private Dancer!
(shh . . . I think another midnight raid is in order . . . )
Are you using artificial lighting?
LOL Syrumani ... I bet Sally is going to have her security system activated now! That Private Dancer is one FABULOUS AV!
Well, if MacGyver could disable a top-notch security system with a rubber band, a chewed on piece of gum, and a bobby pin . . . then we should be able to do it!
Super pics, everyone!
Steve...I see your wheels turning. The combination of the stone and the streps wil be fabulous. One thing I was thinking was if you plan to put your plants in niches or whatever, I would not actually plant them in there but rather have them potted and placed so they can be moved easily for display rotation and care, grooming, etc.. Soften the edges with some moss for a natural look and maybe a few smaller type ferns would be neat in addition to the streps. I can't wait to hear about your plans for this project.
Oh, I can just envision what that would look like. A stone/rock wall full of Gessie's, how wonderful and beautiful that would be!
Nice suggestions Goldleaf, you and I are on the same page, I am playing with a mini fountain and pond idea as well, surrounded by the rocks streps and others, after thought, I think your right, do not plant them directly in the beds, I want to build my lighting in the ceiling of this thing so it can't be seen, I really don't like the looks of gaudy lighting, the problem is adjustability, I might not be able to make that happen with my ideas, I am really not worried as Streps don't use a ton of light. a mini waterfall...........there I go again over the top....LOL
Steve all mine are grown by lights, ibuild my stands, and use walmart light fixures
its worked for years for me and its not a huge investment

I saw an article on line about a year ago where someone built a living wall of plants inside their (I think) New York condo. It had a waterfall too and was really amazing looking! I used to lurk on the Aroid forum occasionally and there was a guy on there who was building a living wall in one of his greenhouses. He has his own business, have to try and find that thread ... he used to update every so often with photo's of the progress, it was really something.
Found it! It's DG'er bwilliams of Kentucky. He has his own business Brian's Botanicals so I'm sure has an unlimited supply of plants for his living wall. I will have to search and see if there are new threads of the finished wall.
Here's the link to the thread where he posted different photo's of the progress: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/682066/
I wish I would,'t have seen that , he did a very nice job, I would love to do something like that with my orchids!
HA, Lin, I took that photo when I took the other that day. Wanted to show the size.
(shh . . . I think another midnight raid is in order . . . )
"another midnight raid"????--you guys do that on this forum? Good thing I'm waaay up here in CT.! Roflol!
Steve...the lights, the plants, the stone, the water...dreamy. Perfect Feng Shui...
Thanks for that very interesting and beautiful link, Lin.
You are welcome! I wish the magazine article was still on line that showed the amazing living wall in the N.Y. Condo. I can't even remember the name of the magazine - may have been Architectural Digest but the article was no longer available on line after a few months and that was almost two years ago.
I googled and found some interesting looking examples. Scroll down this page and take a look: http://www.eltlivingwalls.com/photo_gallery.php
And you may have seen these wall boxes that Gardener's Supply sells: http://www.gardeners.com/Living-Wall-Indoor/37-085RS,default,pd.html
Goldleaf thats awesome, what is the deal on them...ie can they be grown indoors, how about lighting? Thats awesome looking
Grow your staghorn in filtered light where it won't come into contact with direct sunlight at any time during the day.

Grows on both trees and rocks, generally in rainforests.

Very nice Staghorn, GoldLeaf! I have a very small one that I mistakenly planted in a small orchid basket a couple of years ago ... it's attached itself to the basket and would rip apart if I tried to remove it. I had a very large one and misplaced, or rather forgot about it. When we had our pool area redone this summer things were scattered all over the yard. Well, a couple of days ago I found it hanging on the fence in the backyard behind a tree ... almost totally dead! It's been out there since the end of June and we haven't had much rain. Needless to say it isn't salvageable! Too bad I didn't leave it in an area where the sprinklers would have gotten it.
An acquaintance of ours had a beautiful gigantic Staghorn that they had owned for many years, they had to use heavy chains to hang it from the oak tree. They live south of us and I haven't been to their house in awhile. Next time I see him or his wife I will have to ask them if they still have it. They've been retired for years and have done a lot of traveling the past few years. They are neat plants!

Lin, are you sure your staghorn is dead? I have one hanging out front on a pole. It never gets watered unless it rains. Every evening we have moisture in the air (dew or humidity-I don't know which) and that's how it gets watered. I would give yours some water and see what happens. It may come back. It's worth a shot.
hmmm ... I guess I will go out and bring it in then. It's supposed to be in the mid 40's here tonight! I brought the orchids in again and covered a bunch of stuff with old blankets and sheets.
You guys are lucky living in Florida where you can grow so many plants outdoors like orchids, etc. and I'm sure Staghorn Ferns grow very easily too. I would love to see the gigantic one you mentioned, Lin, hanging by heavy chains. Amazing.
Speaking of orchids, these are tiny ones...the first I'll post is Oncidium Variegatum. (aka Tolumnia variegata)...sorry it's not blooming but the little plant is cool anyway. I'll have to do a search for a photo of the flowers.
This one is trailing or sprawling...Epidendrum porpax...both of these are species orchids.

A easy to grow variety of creeping, equitant Epidendrum. Extremely quick grower. A nice miniature that likes it warm and moist. The flower is as cute as a bug. about .5" from tip of the dorsal to bottom of the labellum

ask thad to show you pics of his,Im sure it would be tough for me to pick up one
they are monsters, but then again you know thad, all the stuff he grows is huge
JIM
I'm sure Thad has his staghorn happily outdoors in Florida. That guy is so lucky to be able to grow so many gesneriads outside too like Kohlerias, etc. I would like to see some photos and I will ask him, Jim. Thanks for telling me.
When I was at that nursery in Seguin yesterday they had giant staghorn ferns on wood so heavy they had to be braced.........................I took a lot of picture and will take more tomorrow on my way home.
Those orchids, Goldleaf, are outstanding choices! You did 'good', girl!
You like that orchid forum you posted? I joined the Orchid Board @ a week ago, but am overwhelmed by it.

I have a few HD NoID phals, 2 Phaps, and a couple dendrobiums, and an epidendrum I thought I killed, but is sending up a new shoot. I want to get some mini's, but have been too busy focusing on the av's.
I've never been on any orchid forum....
I grow for pleasure and am not a serious collector. I've grown them for years and find them to be quite easy especially phals. Those are hard to kill and can even take some neglect but I try not to ^_^. Your orchid is lovely. I suppose the fanciest one I have is a variegated phal that's a bit hard to come by. My mother was quite the orchid grower and had a greenhouse for them. She supplied florists at times. Mine are grown indoors in natural light for the most part I recently bought two mini phals that were half price because they were without blossoms. They are budded up now and I'll post pics when the buds open. They will be a surprise for me but I wasn't worried about it as I have never seen an orchid I didn't like. If I had the space, I suppose they could become a passion.
OOH! love that! Orchids are secondary for me b/c they bloom infrequently, as a rule, as compared with violets. Also most plants "talk" to me...ie---I can look at them and know if they are happy or stressed, and often know what they need if stressed. No such deal with orchids! Some times I just don't know WHAT they are thinking. I have one phal I was about ready to toss that is throwing up 2 bloom spikes. Go figure!
Maybe it read your mind^_^
Yeah--It was afraid I was gonna give it some of my famous "drop therapy" LOL
