Imadigger............you have a very good point................yes , it would be a good idea to put perlite in the bottom of little seedlings..........so you don't drown them........I am planting up baby streps that are bigger and stronger than seedlings........

Yes, I've noticed the Optimara ID site is not always correct. I've even found the same exact photo used for two different violets. Optimara is more into selling than accurate ID I guess.
Not much new blooming today, just the same stuff except Cherokee Trail. This is it's first bloom ever!!!
I FINALLY was able to get a decent picture of Vintage Wine! It only took about a dozen tries . . . I hope it looks as good enlarged!
I'm wondering if I should even refer to the FC info, if I were to list leaves or plant for O. Millennia . . . could it be that the FC photos just need to be updated? I notice on my blooms, as well as the Optimara site, and a listing on ebay all look like my blooms. I don't know.

Nichole, I am laughing at you with your black drop............looks like velvet or something. I just use a shoebox bottom and put them on the chair where the black is showing...............(the black in the chair)
Gail, that's exactly what it is! Everything I tried before just didn't look very good (to me, anyway). Sallysblooms said that she uses black velvet when she takes her cool pictures, so I copied her . . . just got to practice and get to the point where you can't tell it's velvet!
how funny...............maybe you could just put the velvet down on something like a table or the floor and just take the picture where the velvet is flat. Sally has a program for doing all that black background, etc.....................so don't compare the two..........
Syru, I love the way Sallys pictures look, so I copied her too. I don't take pictures with the velvet all the time, just on special ones. I use dark green velvet (couldn't get black-they were sold out.) Sally told me what program she uses, and I'm learning how to use it.
I won't ever learn how to use a fancy pancy program but just curious as to which one she is using...........I am too lazy.............Nery is blooming today!
Have you ever found that you have too much of something (ha!), so you experiment?
I just took the suckers off Rob's Argyle Socks. I knew I had one or two, but when I was done, there were 8 total! One was too small to do anything with, so with the remaining 7 . . . I dipped 2 into Shultz Take Root, 2 into Clonex, and left the other 3 alone.
I guess it would be a better experiment if I did it with leaves instead. We'll see.

I am such a proud mommy! DS finished his homework (while DD is taking her nap), and got up on the bench to see what I was doing. He wanted to stick a leaf, so he did everything! Well, to be fair, I cut the holes and put in some perlite and soil mix. He did everything else!
Way to go!!!-- get him interested now and it will be a life long hobby!! Just wait til he gets his first babies and then his first blooms....I got hooked on cactus by my best friends mom at about that age, and she got me interested in AV's a few years later....now that I have cycled back around first to gessies and also to them, I want to find all the older cultivars: pixie pink and pixie blue trail, Tommie Lou and alll the ones that were my "first loves".
I want to compliment everyone on all the blossom pics on the November thread and on this new part 2. Gail, Bristol's Moon Moth is a beauty.

My son, to this day at age 36, loves anything to do with plants. He is trimming trees and going to all kinds of courses and wants to enroll at semester and take some horticultural courses. He sold residential real estate in Austin for years and says it is too stressful and he loves being outside and trimming trees. It is really a work of art for him to trim trees.
You are so smart for letting him 'do his own thing'. Now you have to make sure he meets success the first time since he is so young and wouldn't understand failure.

Apples don't fall far from the tree, Gail. I wonder where he got his love for plants and trees?
This was his first indoor plant. This spring, he planted baby carrot seeds. The green parts grew pretty good, and he would pick one every other week and say - no, not big enough! He even helps me when I'm moving something from a pot to the ground.
Off to look at vintage violets . . .
Looks nice . . . but did you notice it says Last Updated 10-08-07? Maybe they got the day and year mixed up?

This is my last post about my son........but when we lived in the mountains of New Mexico, I had gro lights all over the house literally and grew all my summer plants from seed. (There were no nurseries around). In the spring when the nights were freezing but the days were nice, he would gladly help me take all the trays outside on the deck and bring them back in as soon as he came home from school.
Then he wanted gro lights in his room........the basement of an old cabin on the river......so I put them up for him and that started his love for plants.
Today..................when I go to see him, all he wants is for me to bring him plants. I took one time about 10 african violets ..........that was almost a year ago and he told me recently how big and pretty they were. I almost died...........realizing that he had kept them nice without gro lights........

Yes, I use black velvet. I do not use Paint Shop Pro for backgrounds. I write the name with PSP. I put my plants on fabric. I have all kinds of colors of fabrics. This is my green mottled fabric. It is really neat.

That's pretty, but the black velvet background sure makes the pretties "pop"! Sally, I love how you use Paint Shop Pro for writing on your photo's! The ones with the little jewels and the names are really great!
Thanks! I just love taking pictures of everything and violets are wonderful subjects! In my violet room/office, I have a large desk and the curtains make a great backdrop.

Yes, the velvet works great. Any velvet like fabric than absorbs light is good.
Sally..........that is awesome with all those colors. I think I might have to break down and buy some fabric.........I am thinking that I still have some black velvet from when my sister in law and I were in the jewelry business (lol).................and used all those blacks for display.
I can see this is going to be a dangerous place to hang out! I started out wanting to grow a couple of houseplants. Now I 've got a 5-shelf plant stand with lights full of a variety of plants. Since I'm growing gessies (thanks, Gail!), I had to learn about capillary matting and wicking and humidity domes. Now that I've got a couple of plants in bloom I've got to get a digital camera so I can post pics here, but to make the pics look good, I've got to get a variety of fabrics to use as backdrops for the plants. I got interested in epi's but one wouldn't do, and today I potted 8 leaf cuttings. OH BOY!
Just kidding. I'm having a blast learning tons and enjoying your pictures. Thanks to everyone for sharing your pictures and knowledge.

Gail--"lowellsf"? I need to get a camera too--What do people here use? Which features should I look for? I already know I need the stabilization feature, but what else is important?
My camera is a Cannon S5 I love it.... Ok ladies I have a question about AV's You all know I don't grow them much but I have gotten myself a nice little collection.. Now I am not sure when to pot these into bigger pots and I have one bigger one and wanted to know if I should put one of those rings under her? You also have to understand some of these were shipped here when I was/am spraying for bugs and a few look awful.... so HELP.... Also if you see any little white stuff on them that is just from me dunking them into the bug stuff... That was much easier then spraying each and everyone and this way I know every leaf of every plant got bug stuff on it....
I am going to resize my pictures then post them ok?
Sally as always your plants are beautiful on black velvet or on nothing.... I would love to get one of my av's to grow BIG and beautiful like one of the ladies posted in this forum but on a diffrent thread.

Ok here are a few of my av's and I have about ten other in solo cups... I never know when to pot up these little beggers LOL. All of these are Bells of Ireland as I thought it was a episcia and put it in a bowl and boy did it take off... I kinda mess her up taking her out of the bowl...
