Seems like 2 or 3 times an hour,I'm getting calls from every politician in the United States!
Some I never even heard of!
Wife says there not selling anything so they have a right to call,I said well there trying to sell themselves and buy my vote!!!!!
What say uh you?
What happened to the the no call list???
I think that 'no call' list was a joke from the beginning. Even after we got on it, we kept getting calls...and still are!
Only one more day....and NO MORE POLITICIANS calling...(I hope!)
Of course the kids keep telling us if we had caller ID...there wouldn't be a problem!
marcy, about caller ID: we have caller ID and a lot of solicitors show up as "no number" or "private" so you can still be "attacked". Since I have friends that show as "private", whether or not to answer the phone becomes a gamble of sorts. The DNC program has been disappointing for me as well.
also, I think politicians, charities, pollsters are not included in the program. well, that's 50% of the solicitation calls, right there. you said it: what a joke
Caller ID + answering machine works fine for me. They never leave a message.
I have a problem,phone rings I have to answer,never know if it's a emergency!
I don't remember anyone calling me when these guys were running for president Eisenhower,,Kennedy,Johnson,Carter,Nixon,Regan,Bush or Clinton calling me!!!
I have been coming home to an answering machine full of taped messages. Bah!
The "Do not call registry" does cut down on calls though. But still get ired by the "professional fundraisers". You ask them nicely not to call, they call back with another charity. Seems you have to say no to all their charities.
I am not sure why it bugs me so much but it does. Really gets the knickers in a knot.
Somehow...some places seem to think we own a farming business. We have told them...over and over...no business here...private residence. They have even argued with us...well yes...you DO have a business....DUHHHHH?????
Believe me...this bugs us a lot!! Especially...since they don't seem to want to get the message!
Oh boy! LOL Now you've opened a can of worms!
This is one of my pet peeves. I have cell phone only and have requested MANY times to be on the no call lists. When I order something, I check the box that says not to share my info. When someone calls, I politely ask that they not call back. When I use my credit cards, I have requested they not share this info, either.
Still, the calls come. I have trouble sleeping at night, so my sleep time in the morning is vital. There are 3 people whom I've asked, repeatedly, not to call in the morning. Evening calls only, please. 7:30am rolls around...dang phone is ringing!!!
My last name is Santiago but that doen't mean I speak Spanish. "No Espaniol." I say. Next day...same person. (We get offers for things in the mail in Spanish, as well.)
I've only once had to resort to calling the BBB. The calls stopped immediately.
I get calls for renewing the warranty on a vehicle I haven't owned in YEARS. I get them for renewing on a vehicle they can't identify. Fishing, is what they're doing. I get calls for losing weight. (Why do they think I want to?) I get calls to put new roof on my house. (What makes them think I need one?)
I know these people need a job but, my goodness! They can be so pushy, that you have to resort to drastic measures. I had one guy call me "stinky old ***** ", because I refused whatever he was selling and he'd called back twice. Excuse me? How can you tell how I smell? His supervisor did call back and apologize but still...
The DNC list was an immense help to me....but the newspapers and politicians are exempt from the list I understand...as well as charities.
]
There was a woman in Fl who made a nice living keeping records of telemarketers who called her...if they call you again after you have told them not to...then she would sue them in small claims court...they would pay about $2,000 to keep from going to court...so she made aliving doing this.
My problem is with some foriengn-speaking persons who are calling for "On-line Pharmacy"....any hour of the day is fine with them...they know nothing about the DNC list and care less!!
Jo
Well come supper time,I'm taking the phone off the hook!!
Remember the old party lines when you would listen for the amount of rings????LOL
I have caller ID and a machine. If I recognize the name or the number I pick up. If I don't I let it go to the answering machine. My friends will start to talk, and I'll pick up. It's rare that a sales person will leave a message.
I have stopped answering the phone at all. My cell phone # is private and only relatives and very close friends have it. I tell people it is best to e.mail me or just leave a message. I do call back if it's a "real person". I can remember a time when I liked getting phone calls. But, it has just gotten worse. The "do not call list" is a joke. Caller i.d. didn't work because the calls were all "out of the caller area" wherever that was. Every day, several times a day, I get a message from the car warranty people, even though my old car was paid off and warranty expired years ago. Not to mention all the ones who want to Save us from our credit card debt! l.o.l.
I've been getting this one recorded solicitation for I dunno what, that at the end says, push 1 for more info or press 2 to be taken off the list. Have pressed 2 several times already....sigh
and now starting to get voicemail solicitations on the cell phone.....heavy sigh
Then there are the ones ,where no one says anything, but you think you can hear heavy breathing then a click they hang up!!
I have had 2 messages on voice meil and it is a computer that says someone will be right with me then music then it says please hold someone will be right with you after more music it actually said they would have to call back all reps were busy. What is that??? If they don't have time to talk don't bother.
And now creditors hide behind not available or unknown. Thought they passed a law they were not allowed to do that? I just quit answering for all 800 numbers and no info of either who or none at all.
Lots of people I work with,no longer have home phones, just cell phones, and they say only give your number to family and friends, save money and the hassle of all this of getting bad calls!
That's what we did, canceled the land line.
Bad part is everyone and their brother has had a cell for years so now YOUR new cell was someone else's so you STILL pay for those junk calls if they have you (mostly just businesses looking for so and so).
But it did away with lots of junk calls for us :)
That's what we did. We have cells and no land line. I've had mine for 9 years and it's only in the last year we get these calls.
A little off topic, but my cheap alarm clock broke so now I just use my cell alarm. Great! except those nights when I have to get up out of my cozy bed to get the phone...
Just a cell phone here, too, and getting recorded messages up the wazoo! I ended up setting all my contact #s with a chosen ringtone and left the default ringtone silent, so at least the important calls are getting through : ) Some carriers offer a 'block/reject call' service, wish mine did!
Hey! Maybe I'll do that. Set my ringtones to family and friends only. Good idea. Thanks.
hem- great idea!!
I just got Vonage for my home phone and I love it. I was told I sound really clearer too. Did not stop the calls.
I don't have a cell due to not paying attention to Judge Judy and put my 33 yr old on it when his wife divorced him so the school could get him if the kids were sick. You would have thought I would learn from those court shows being 90% allowing someone on you cellphone contract and they don't pay.
The best part (sarcastic) is I learned not to do it again. hehe
I agree, hem has an excellent idea! Gonna attempt to do that as well!! I only give my cell to family and friends and my daughter's school. I don't know how they got ahold of my number but I received several political calls on the cell! One of them was an actual person and I cut her off and told her she was calling my personal cell phone and I was not happy! She apologized, which was more than you usually get! Sure wish I knew how they snagged my number! I've had this same number for 6 years at least and never got political calls before!
I am thinking about caller id- I'm tired of the hang ups after I take the time to get to the phone and say hello!
I've never sprung for caller ID at home--it's great that the cell shows you the number before answering.
I had the same lady call me by mistake a few times --i saved her phone number under "wrong number" to help me avoid answering her.
That's another good idea, thanks sally! I have started getting wrong number calls on my cell recently...I'll start saving them that way!! It's rather funny that it would all start now when I've had the number for so long! DH and I have the same number for our cells except the last two numbers I'll have to ask him if he's started getting funny calls
The Do Not Call list expires 5 years after you get it. After 5 years you are supposed to renew it. Guess what, ya'll, it's been 5 years since it was implemented and most of us got on it right from the get go. Here's a link from Snopes about the DNC registry, and this is new info. I haven't had a call from a telemarketer in a long, long time, and neither has my husband.

I actually had to ck and see if I was still on it, because I was getting some calls. (I was still on it) So the next time I got a call I replied "Why are you calling me?" (not nasty, just a statement) The guys remark was (sassy) "because you are in the phone book?!"
I explained in small words that I was on the do not call registry and that it was illegal to call my number and that he needs to ck that list. He said "we don't bother with that"
I was angry and tried to hold my cool and mentioned lawyers and fines and such and he hung up quick.
edited to add, he was calling from a direct dish tv. I am sure the law applies to this kind of call. I don't even have a tv set.

Heh heh heh...small words. With one syllable each?
Thanks for the heads up crissy! I'll call and renew!
I love it cpartschick! My DH is a lawyer (just started) so I'll have to have some fun on the next call!!! I'll remember to keep the words small, Court...money....sue...money...lawyer...damages...did I mention money for me? LOL!

More info- apparently, a law was enacted in 2007 that made it so your number does not get expelled or expire now!
Quoted from the above link-
Your registration will not expire. Telephone numbers placed on the National Do Not Call Registry will remain on it permanently due to the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007, which became law in February 2008. Read more about it at http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/04/dncfyi.shtm.
I( just confirmed mine...Jo
I think I'll say would you hold please, set the phone down walk away for a few minutes, then come back and ask if you are still holding!!!
If they say yes,ask then why???LOL
I just can't believe it's been 5 years!! That's insane!
What cracks me up is when you answer the phone and get a recorded message, "Please hold, an operator will be with you in just a moment." I have never held but I just might sometime. When I was a lot younger I must have been a lot quicker minded than I am now. I remember I got this telemarketer calling and let him do his spew over, oh shoot, I don't remember what he was selling. Anyway he said, "It's all yours for the low price of..." I said, I'll buy it if you give it to me for ... You know he sold it to me and it ended up being a very good product, I wonder what it was and where it went??
Caller ID, on the list since the start - and in a bad MONTH, I might get 1 call. As for others - politicians and scammy charities - one can actually get some perverse pleasure out of the setting phone aside and saying nothing - OR you can stage some wild scenario and engage the caller in your fake mini drama. Whatever works for your soul, you don't have to be a victim unless you volunteer!!! As for cell phones? I have one. I don't even know the number. I turn it on only when I am going someplace and might need the emergency feature . Since I DO have a GPS, I can no longer complain that I am lost, however.
Friends and family know that if you REALLY want to get hold of me, email works just fine!!!!!!!
We don't have a home phone, just cell phones. I have a GPS too, Love It! I'm all into the Bluetooth technology, in my car, on my gps, pretty much everywhere!
Neither one of us got any politicians calling, in fact I haven't ever had a telemarketer call my phone, I don't think Dave has either.
LOL I sometimes do that with wrong numbers! If they just start talking like I'm the person who they need to be talking to I just play along. One time I got this poor guy, he started with this long story and I just sat there and listened saying Uh-huh once in a while, then he asked me a question about what he should do about someone, of course I couldn't answer, so I just said, "Well, Um, I'm not sure." Then he caught on that he had the wrong number and boy was he embarrassed. We both got a good laugh out of it.
I had a call and he appoligized that he "had the wrong number"....I said in a huffy voice..."Well! I've never been a wrong number in my life!!"...We both laughed and hung up. Jo
Well election over,no more political calls!!!
Couple calls, with nobody saying a word, then you here a click and loose connection.
I wish I had some of those numbers,so I could call them back and claim they voted the wrong man President,to let them no how I feel now,so I could blow off some steam!!!LOL
And I approve of this message!!!!LOL
I just renewed mine, too, thanks for the info! I keep getting these calls saying "This is the last chance to lower my interest rate on my credit card". I finally akded "Which credit card? I don't have one!" Would you believe I got still yet ANOTHER call from them?!!
"Do not be alarmed! This is to inform you that the warranty on your vehicle is about to expire."
That's what I got just a moment ago. You call the number back and it's says...
"By calling this number, you have been put on our Do Not Call List. Thank you. Please allow 24-48 hours for our records to update. You may now hang up."
I've done this several times. Calling the BBB is my next step.
