Garden Photos - Part 42

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Very nice pictures Victor and RC. That's why I love Fall!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'm so jealous Victor!

thanks Debilu! I have a love/hate relationship with fall. It's beautiful, but too short and always leads to winter!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Beautiful fall shots, RC and Victor! There's no color change like that down here. On our morning walk, we pass one little sugar maple that someone from the north tried to zone-push here. It does have some color later in the winter, but it sort of looks out of place here - if that's possible for a maple to ever look out of place. It has a bit of a Charlie Brown look to it.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Candyce, that's a good idea! This probably seems really silly, but I've not delt that much with annuals. Will this plant actually go to seed if it gets a hard freeze or snow while the flowers are still on it? It has already frozen here and the few annuals at my place started to go down hill. Those flowers at her place are a little more protected, but not for long since she's higher up in elevation than I am. It won't be long before she'll have a couple feet of snow.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks Louise. Ok, you might not have the bright reds... but the mandevillas, citrus, etc. will make up for that i'm sure. I almost feel sorry for that poor sugar maple trying to make it there.

there's a few things going on today, but all of them were taken in the neighborhood around work.

Viburnum nudum

Good morning RC
Nice pictures.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks, and good morning to you as well. How's the weather there supposed to be today?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

cold.
Yes I forgot to turn the clock back. My body doesn't get it so I woke up at 4:30.
Its going to be a long morning befor the sun comes up.
I'm going to do some cutting back of annuals and perens. and start a "green" seperate pile for the compost box,its overflowing with the climbing nastuerteums I weeded out.
They didn't bloom very well so that area is definatly part sun.
They creeped up the side of the deck and wandered about thew deck furniture but only a few blossoms.
Guess I'll try Balloon flowers there next year.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

You're normal. What body would know that it is supposed to adjust an hour just because the government says so!!! The upside is that the sun should be coming an hour earlier for you now. Not so good for me the night owl though. I prefer lighter outside later. But, oh well. Too bad the nasturtiums didn't work out for you though. I bet the balloon flowers will. I think that you'll really like them. They come in so many different colors sizes.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes I have the short ones at the sunnier border of the shade garden but want the tall ones for near the deck and planted in the back of the part sun garden.
I like the blue ones and the white ones, the pink are so pale they hardel count as color.
We should also remember the sun will be comming back
in about seven weeks.
My favorite holiday.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

that's true, many of the pink ones are pale. But, the others will look good in your garden. I like the way you worded that. It took me a few seconds to catch on. But, how true it is.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The Solstice is the real Holiday.
Christmas is an invention of the advertizing agencies.
Leave it to them to pervert a perfectly good holiday.

Solstice is pre Christian, it was celebrated when the sun returned, people brought greens into their houses and there were huge fires and jousts.
I don't know much pagan history but sacrificing vergins was part of the reallly early celebration.
That lets me out.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

More nice ones, Shelly.

Edited to say that the viburnum with the berries looks like nudum.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Very nice shots, Shelly, as always. :-)

Go Pagan! Look where 300 years of those "crusades" have gotten us!

Oh, wait, we're not supposed to bring that part up. Sorry!

:-)

I had better hide before the "offerings," lest I be one!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

good morning again. Yep JoAnn, I knew that there were two different possibilites there. I replied vaguely because either way, i'm good with it and they're both precursers to Spring!

Lol good one Willie, I think you're safe Willie.... you're too far away Salem....

Good call Victor on the nudum. The odd part is that I had every intention mentioning at least that the first one was a viburnum, i must have been sidetracked as I was thinking about how to spell the second one, which is rhytidophyllum. Think i'll go back up to that one and edit.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like rhytidophyllum, or leatherleaf, also. I have a couple. Nice evergreen variety.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree, you can't go wrong with an evergreen that still gives you different colors in the winter. You have a couple. Wow, do you prune yours back some or just let them go? Mine is still little however, i've seen some as tall as 12' or more.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No pruning yet. They are growing very slowly since they are in mostly shade.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Redchic - another gorgeous grouping from you. Wow! All were so pretty! I've never been to Oregon and it is a MUST for me the next time we head out west. I love those viburnum!!

I planted 3 of my 8 tomatoes this morning, along with some broccoli and bright red supertunias. That's as far as I've gotten. We've just about completed The Great Rip Out of all the overgrown stuff. We ran out of room in the car coming down, so I left all of my seeds up in Conn. in my son's dry basement, as well as the dahlias I had planned to try here. That means a trip out to buy seeds in next on my list. I have a bunch of annuals to plant, but my back is in RESIST mode at the moment.
