Chicken Diapers what do you think?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well I am a third generation southern lady no poofy dresses or gardenias around here. Maybe a spring cleaning once every few years. Bare feet yes. Mint julip never had one. Manners YES.

Clarkson, KY

E-VER-Y-THING. The house and grounds get cleaned stem to stern, windows walls and floors, the rugs get beaten thoroughly, the linens all washed and pantry cleaned twice a year. These days it's slacks and an oxford or polo. And they're out there maintaining the kitchen and flower gardens. {{And I'm not doing it!!}}
Supposed to, but WON'T. The MINT JULEP is for the afternoon rest time when it's too hot to be out! As Follows: 2sprigs fresh mint, 1tbs water, 1tsp confectioner's sugar, 1/2c crushed ice, 1 1/2oz bourbon, 1 sprig fresh mint. >>Place mint in blender, add water and sugar. Blend until leaves disappear, add ice and bourbon; blend a few seconds. Pour into frosted glass or julep cup which has been filled with finely chopped ice. Stir and decorate w/ sprig of mint.
Serves 1. (Serve w/ a short straw no taller than the mint to get the aroma with the flavor!!) again Va. Hospitality.

Clarkson, KY

You said it wren!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Think how I feel. I'm supposed to wear a touque over my beautious bad doo and only drink beer EEK!!! Go Wren go! I hose down the big thing in the middle of the garden inside and out every couple of years and that's about it. Cousin nut I threw a party during stampede one year and served mint julips. Everyone fell down including me. I think the northern limb of the fam tree has lost its fortitude. I have trouble with Southern Comfort too sigh. Now JD is a different story which is featured in my Mostly Famous Spiked Citrusy Cranberry Sauce (receipe to be posted on the Help from Claire thread soon.... I promise.)

Clarkson, KY

Yeah, I talk big but can't hold it!!!!lol....Mostly I'm asked not to imbibe cuz it makes no difference and such a waste when others....

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

So i have never had a poofy dress daddy didn't allow NO drinkin and a true southern lady never let alcohol cross her lips.
We cleaned when it needed cleanin and we gardened and raised our own food and our own meat.
Chickens was for eatin not playing with and most of the time us younguns did the deed and didn't mind cause it meant we was havein chicken for supper.
WE always mind our manners and my son says yes ma'am and yes sir and he don't sass neither.
People come here for our souhtern hospitality yall come in and sit down is a staple here and we like it that way.
I'm southern and we don't spit on the floor or all live in shacks with a coon dog on the front porch and half our teeth missin playin a banjo.
We are good common folk who would give our last piece of bread to the hungry and the coat off our back to someone who needs it. Mama always said don't get above your raisein and i never have and i'm very proud of where i come from and who I'am

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Amen! That is the true southern way. Our family too.

(Zone 7b)

Thank You Wren us southern ladies have to stick together^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

THANK YOU HARMONY, that is my experience visiting in the south and I loved every minute of it. On a personal note, I luved that I could drive through the south and feel safe and always be welcomed.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Unfortunately that old south is disappearing. We true southerners are a dieing breed.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Do you think we could start a southern school. Teach them how to raise chickens and cook good old southern comfort food. And the right way to drink good old white lightning.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I will be your first pupil.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Ok just do not forget your mayonnaise jar and your snuff(my grandmother god rest her southern sole had to have her snuff jar) Oh she raised chickens in her younger years and was still gardening when she past away at 93

(Zone 7b)

Wren i know about the snuff jar.
We are still here in the deep parts where others dare not go i can still show you small towns and good honest people.
All my relatives are true southern and we know how to entertain company when you have friends here they are for life.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

You ladies are awesome. Thanks.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I life in a town that now is over a million people most of which came from other places. I miss the old south . My grandmother came from west Florida and it is still the old south over there. It is so sad when you do nice things for some one and they either look at you like you are weird or thing you are some wonderful person and all I am is a southern girl. Back when I was able to work I had a boss that was younger than I was and it really bothered him that I "sir'd" him.

Now I am getting all sad. I need to go find me some comfort food. Any one have any Hog jaws and blackeyed peas, turnip greens, fried catfish and grits?????

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Just country at hearth.

(Zone 7b)

Just got some grits at the store going to have cheese grits and fried ham for breakfast.
Might could russel up some pepper salse to go with the blackeyed peas you got some fat back for seasoning?
I can cook some good cornbread made with real butter and buttermilk in and iron skillet.

Clarkson, KY

Don't forget the sugar in your rice and the peanut butter on your waffles!! Molasses in the green beans...Independence is the biggest southern tradition! All the stores were up north.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I get the fat back had cheese grits this morning. Love the cornbread in the iron skillet. Get any cane syrup to go on that cornbread.

Man you are making me hungry. I remember those farm breakfast in west Florida. Buttermilk biscuit, ham, bacon, eggs, grits, tomatoes, fried potatoes.

I think I better stop here before I raid the icebox. I think there is some butterbeans, and tomatos in there and some cold cornbread.

Good nite y'all Sandy

(Zone 7b)

Butterbeans we had those once a week year round with onions and tomatos on the side and a big slice of corn bread.
I still fix butterbeans and eat them the same way i did when i was a kid.
How bout some good old chicken and dumplins or fried pork chops and eggs

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I still can't get my hubby to like chicken and dumplins... how about black eyed peas and okra?

Clarkson, KY

Can't make me eat black-eyed peas, but I've got a bunch of pickled okra in the pantry. It's more western south from where we're blathering on. The above blather is DEEP south.

(Zone 7b)

Fried okra and fried corn with fried fat back...........Mama would also fix boiled Okra which down here we call it okrie

Clarkson, KY

Wow. Maybe I'm more Northern Southern....

(Zone 7b)

Grow i didn't want to say nothin but we never had peanut butter on our waffles or surp in our green beans and we never ate rice we would have rice pudding tho.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I couldn't stand okra until I was an adult. My dad traumatized me in telling me it was a slug one time as it was going down the hatch. He's lucky he didn't end up with it in his lap. ;-)

(Zone 7b)

My Daddy would slurp it down and it looked so slimmy it gross's me out just thinkin about it YUK

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

ha!

Clarkson, KY

Grandaddy was from Georgia and they did the PBnWaffles (and plenty of syrup). The molasses is from Miss and Va. for flavoring w/ the ham -not a lot.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I done do the pb on waffles but may try it. I'm game for most things in food. Will not touch pickled pig's feet or frog legs, or cream of wheat.

Love the way my country cousins make fried corn thought it was not good for the waist line.

Clarkson, KY

I think the trick is when you don't have much meat left use the fat! Then get back out and work it off!!! That's the part we moderns forget too often.

And peanut butter on waffles w/ syrup over it all is DIVINE. And filling! Less waffle down the hatch.

Cream of Wheat thats the nouthern version of Grits.
We made honey butter to put on our toast you just take soft butter add as much honey as you want and mix with a fork and slap it on.
We had sugar biscuits Mama said you got a hungry cryin youngun give them a sugar biscuit it will shut them up.
Sugar biscuit a hot biscuit with a melted pat of butter and sprinkled with sugar or you can put jelly/honey etc.

Clarkson, KY

Grits over Cream of Wheat any and every day!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

How about hush puppys and hoecakes yummy. Do you know how they get their names. The hush puppys where bits of dough fried up and thrown to the dogs to keep them quit when the cooking was going on- so hush puppy.
The hoecake was baked on the back of a hoe. LOL

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

Y'all are makin' me HUNGRY!!

I love okra gumbo--one of my favourites. Fried okra is good, but the gumbo...YUM. Black eyed peas are another favourite.

Suze

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Seafood gumbo Fried green tomatoes, Fried squash, field peas, speckled butterbeans, buttermilk biscuits. Sweet potato pie. I could keep going.
