I saw that the 3 seedlings I planted last fall have survived the winter and are leafing out! Got me wondering how those I sent out are doing for others and decided to revive this thread.
Anyone seeing signs of life from your babies?
Golden chain tree (Laburnum anagyroides) seedlings
I didn't get one of yours but mine is still doing fine...blooming in central Alabama currently. The blooms are heavier at the bottom of the tree and little activity at the top; don't know if that's a sign of stress or not...Last year it was blooming top and bottom.
Passi, I'm so envious. We're practically in the same zone, what have I gone wrong? The golden rain tree are doing well here, but not the 'chain' tree!
Hi Neal, We had a long winter and so far a longer cool spring. So I am still moving sdlg. tomato plants in and out or weather cold. The Laburnum Golden Chain, sdlg. you sent me are still in their little pots waiting. Only one has so far shown nice green buds, Can't tell about the others yet. But I again want to thank you for going to the trouble to get the seeds germinated and started, and have hopes of 1 or 2 more to show signs of growth. It has been very dry as well as cold, but today and last night some rain, but of course the wind is blowing hard enough to dry out the rain!!!!!
Donna
Glad to hear you've got at least one for sure survivor Donna! Do you have them in the greenhouse?
bigred, looking really good! Very promising to us southerners!
Peggy, I'm double envious. That's a fine, fine specimen of Laburnum anagyroids! Congrats.
now if it'll just bloom
When it does, it's going to be the talk of the town! LOL. Peggy, that reminds me. Did your Dove tree get planted? Or did you traded your seedling for ten bushels of golden nudgets?
Bigred, your laburnum looks great! Mine never looked so happy.
Surely, it'll bloom with such luxurious growth!
You'll send pix to show off when it happens, I presume?
By the way, is yours in blazing full sun?
Lily-love,
sad to say,I gave up on the dove trees. :>(
Wee,
I grew it from seed about 8 yrs ago. You'd think it'd be ready to bloom by now. YUP...all day sun. Gets a little crispy around the edges in the summer heat and will drop some leaves but it always comes back.
Why did you give up on the dove tree?
I have a huge one which of course has never bloomed.
But it's certainly a good grower. Probably about 10 yrs old by now.
I know they're notoriously slow to start blooming.
Fortunately, I'm patient.
Unfortunately, I may not still be around when it starts blooming.
Oh, well.
Robin,
A good time to grow a tree is 15 years ago
I started a Japanese pagoda 3 years ago. I thought at that time to try my hands on some bonsai specimen. As it turned out, the tree is hardy here, so I decided to transplant it into the garden for a focal point. It's now over six feet tall, but will not bloom for another 7 years or so.
Lily, my pagoda tree has started blooming the past couple years.
It's probably a little over 10yrs old.
So, hang in there. It'll happen soon enough!
Meanwhile, I'm patiently awaiting my emmenopterys henryii.
It's 6-7 years old and growing well.
Of course no hope of flowers for the foreseeable future.

Lily-love, aI planted some seeds of Sophora japonica, Pagoda Tree, in 1960. Several grew, I planted one outside in the garden and it grew fairly fast and bloomed at about 10 years. I also planted 2 or 3 in pots for bonsai. I have a picture somewhere with the bonsai I kept, placed in front of the one growing in the garden for comparison. I moved from that home to this one 15 years ago and brought the Bonsai Pagoda tree with me. I keep it in a room on north side of garage (I call it my plant storage room) in the winter. It was putting out new growth very fast and even tho I knew it was probably too early I moved it outside in a sheltered place, Not sheltered enough, so all the new growth got frozen. It isn't dead just looks bad. Here is a poor picture of it , will soon put out nice new growth.
Donna
Lily_love, that is a beautiful shot! Your garden is gorgeous, love the water in the background.
Ruth, Thanks. Wow, it's possible to 'bonsai' the mentioned JP then. I'm heading back out and look for a branch to possibly air layer them for a bonsai then.
Thanks Neal. That's my lilies flower bed. :-) But, looks like everything else is taking over. lol.
Wee,
I was trying to grow them from seed...didn't sprout after three yrs so I knocked them out of the pots to see what was going on. Only one had started to sprout under ground and the others looked just like they did when they went in the pots 3 yrs ago. I guess I killed the sprouting one by knocking out of the pot.
I have a japanese raisin tree I grew from seed about 8 yrs. ago.
