CLOSED: Official Tomato and Pepper Seed Swap - It's a go!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

It's official! We have enough participants from davesgarden and other forums to proceed with the tomato and pepper swap. Here are the guidelines we will follow for this swap.

1) Seeds must be received by me no later than November 28th, so I recommend you mail your envelope no later than November 20th .

2) You can send named varieties of tomatoes or peppers (or both). A minimum of 10 seeds per packet. A maximum of 5 packets of the same seed. An overall maximum of 25 packets per person.

Please ensure seed packets are clearly marked with the name, and whether they are heirloom, OP, or hybrids. If you are sending a non-commercial hybrid, please note the parent plant if known. If seeds are from a commercial source, please note that as well.

3) If you send tomato seeds, you will receive tomato seeds in return. The same idea for peppers, unless you include a note indicating you are open to receiving either in return.

4) Please include a list of what you are sending, your wish list and if there are any seeds you do not want to receive. If you are only interested in heirloom or OP, please tell me that as well. I will try my best to accommodate your wish list, but there are no guarantees of course. The variety will be completely dependent on what is sent in.

5) You will need to mail your seeds along with $1.15 in return postage (for Canada and the US). $1.60 for those outside Canada and the US. You can send Canadian postage stamps, usd or canadian money to pay for return postage, or if you prefer, funds could be credited to my paypal account and I'll buy the stamps.

If you are sending 10 or less seed packets, you should be fine just mailing in a
regular envelope with seeds wrapped in tissue (I am happy to provide the return
envelope in this case).

If you are sending more than 10 seed packets, I would recommend you send a bubble envelope and I will reuse the same bubble envelope to return your surprise seeds to you.

6) I will email you privately with my mailing address once you have posted here to express your interest in participating. If you have already responded to my previous posting, no need to repost, I will contact you within the next couple of days.

Any questions. Please let me know. Let's have fun trading!!!!

Thanks……Heather

Add me to the list too. I'll send my seeds this weekend.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Heather, is it too late to get in on this? I've been keeping an eye on this thread, but was not secure with how to save seed for trading. That is, till I saw the article about fermenting and cleaning them! It worked like a charm, so now I have some nice, clean seeds that look just like those I buy :-)

I just got these out of the slurry yesterday, so they still need time to dry (3 weeks according to the article, and I've been advised not to get in a hurry about it), but there will still be plenty of time to get the seeds out in time (I think?).

jnajarian84 - Glad you can join us. I sent you a private d-mail.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I've got my seeds ready to go, but need to go to the post office to check postage to canada!

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

Just a note, I had to get a customs declaration at the post office. Had to do it in person. I am assuming that was because it was a larger envelope, but not sure. I should have asked more questions. At any rate, mine went in the mail yesterday. I hope they don't get held up in customs. Z

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

going to post office this week if not 1st of next week so will get mine out then.

Silly Michael!
You actually TOLD them (the PO) you were mailing seeds?
Oh, my!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

ok so dont tell?

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

I've done it before and called it "hobby supplies" which was true since they were flower seeds.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks for the updates everyone. Will let you know when your packages arrive.

As an aside, most of the folks I trade with in the US just toss their envelopes in with the regular lettermail and I've never had any difficulty receiving seeds. Haven't had one go astray yet.

We're up to 56 participants and still going strong. :)

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6b)

Count me in, Please

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Just got back from the post office and the seeds are on the way! I told the PO worker that it was seeds, but she said there was no need for any paper work to be filled out.

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

Off topic, but, my local postal branch is one of the worst in the city. I don't know what their problem is but there seems to be a deep seated morale issue there. And when they do get an efficient and pleasant clerk there, that person doesn't stay long. Sorry, but you gave me an opening to whine. :-) Z

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Michael, I've lived in a town with a PO like that, but almost everyone behind the counter in that town was like that, LOL. I'm really lucky to have a bunch of nice women who work at our PO. I showed up at 4:30 with 40 boxes of lily bulbs for a co op I did (I was rushing it all day to get there earlier, but the task was pretty big, lol). I kept them till 20 minutes after closing- I was just sure they'd hate me. Ended up talking with them and joking around, told them I hoped the over time let them splurge on something, and brought them all a bag of lily bulbs with the next day's pile of boxes. They've all enjoyed the flowers and been extra helpful since.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

We're up to 60 participants from a couple of different forums and the envelopes are starting to arrive. I just finished adding the varieties to my spreadsheet.

I'm quite amazed actually....I've only received 4 envelopes so far, and we have 44 different types of tomato seeds and 37 different types of pepper. This isn't counting the variety I will be adding to the pot.

Come join us for the fun...there is still time :)

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

I mailed mine today. This is so exciting.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow! What a huge variety there will be!

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Wos, this is exciting! I'm looking forward to trying new types this spring!!

Willamette Valley-OS, OR(Zone 8a)

Last Minute Signing-Up.
Thanks Heather.
