Salted PE CAHN MISSION #1

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I don't see anything ickky.. it just stinks in there.. no goo.. maybe it is just stinky after 21 days no matter what. It is normal for her to lose her chest feathers.. I think she is cooking herself.. when you put your hand under her she is so very warm.. I could get sweaty in mere seconds.. thats why I really will not worry about the birds too much this winter.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Then Commander Moxon was able to secure a new pair of fawn duckwing OEG bantams. The chicken who died this morning was a fawn duckwing OEG female. So now I have 2 fawn duckwing roos and 2 fawn duckwing hens. I also got another roo in the deal that is an OEG mix.

Here is their picture - this is the fawn pair.

QM Fran, I thought you said there was a broken egg....

Broken eggs are generally icky.

Here is a pic of the mix OEG roo.

Missed that!!!! How about Weird Wanda and Crazy Jack for name SIR---Mame--Sir---I think I need to hit the bunk, I hit the weird crazy hour. Good nite Y;all.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

where is our timid claire that wasn't sure if she wanted a chicken or not just a few short months ago.. what happened to her?

Lodi, United States

I said this in the broody thread, but here it goes again--I think a bare chest is normal in many broody birds--it helps keep the eggs warm and humid. The broody's metabolism goes into overdrive and she get very hot.....

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

thanks cat.. I asked here too cuz everyone was hanging here.

Yes claire I did say there was a broken one.. but I see no goo..

very nice looking birds

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh, well good on no goo. Goo would be bad. I guess just let her be. Maybe put an air freshener up there! LOL!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL, rose flavored yuk... great.. that should smell just like grannys house!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hmmm....maybe get "vanilla spice" or something like that?

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

PFC Doe, pom poms dusted and ready!

Lodi, United States

Pine--it's cleansing.

frans--I didn't mind answering twice--it's just embarrassing. Like, I know everyone is actually saying--"We know! We know! Boy does she have to go on and on."

Cause I do go on....
and on...
and on...
and on ...
and.........

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Catscan - I got pigeons. Go see my new thread!

PFC Doe! Fabulous! Gimme an H! Gimme an A! Gimme a T! Gimme a C! Gimme an H! What does it spell?! HATCH! Yaaaaaaaaaaay! (much pom pom waving)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I think rabbits do the bare skin thing too, don't they when they have young? Or am I off my rocker.

Sounds like things are all prepped for the 3 hatching missions. PB goodies, pom-poms at the ready, TWT ready for the fluff ups.

New Polish chickens, fawn duckwings, and the mix OEG are looking awesome. I like the touch of teal in the OEG mix roo.

I need to rest up for the big day tomorrow.

Lodi, United States

That's right! Rabbits do it too!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Rabbits pull their hair to line their nests!

(Zone 7b)

Rabbit's only pull fur to line their nest they don't sit on their young and only enter the nest once or twice a day if the babys are lucky to feed them.

Lodi, United States

Wild rabbits make little blankets of grass to cover their young.

I like thinking about that.

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Of course! I didn't mean to infer that they did! I raised rabbits once upon a time!

(Zone 7b)

Wasn't refering to you doe was refering to the bare skin thing..............

Lodi, United States

Chickens never feed their young.

(Zone 7b)

Well in a way they do because when they leave the nest the hen will pick up tiny pieces of feed and place it in front of the chick as she doe's her dinners on cluck.
They call them when they find bugs and other good things and the first chick there when she calls gets the goody.

Lodi, United States

I knew you would say that....But whenever I pointed my infant sons to the refrigerator, they insisted on my opening it and preparing the food and stuffing it into their little rosebud mouths.

And chickens don't do anything like that. For them pointing works. Lucky chickens.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Awww...that's cute, we never get to see that with this incubating thing....

I hope I have a broody hen one day.

(Zone 7b)

So Cat did you bait me with that?

Yes you should try it at least once it's a real treat to see how attentive a hen is with her chicks.
Did you know a hen hears her chicks and comunicates with them before they hatch thats why they are so imprinted on eachother.

captain josh reporting exceedingly late because you americans get no sleep LOL how goes the hatch commander

Lodi, United States

Welcome, Captain Josh. Have you noticed that you and I are the only ones with boring titles?

Do you have any impending missions to report?

I am launching again this Sunday, which would be, ummm, some other day for you.

The Sumatran egg I patched with tissue and glue made it to day 16 and then died. Mother Bird ZZ was given a pair of Millies. And someone tried to start another cupcake fight--but we were better prepared this time and nipped it in the bud.

Go ahead and try to catch up on all the threads....the Anjil sisters should show up pretty soon--although Peafowl has trouble typing right now. One of my ancestors was a Peacock, maybe we are related?
