Thanks for the additional info on the plastic, i love recycling....and those Mexican Petunias, Man!!! Those are the most easy to root and adapt to a new place in the yard...not invasive but rampant...They were here whenI moved in and surived all frosts fora few years...great eye on catching those, i do lve the flowers but only wish they work as a cut one so I could vase them up and give them out...what is in the MG potting mix you use is it posted somewhere in the forums? Sticky thread? hjouysehold pollinators...hmmm i have had some bees in the house this year, lol, but the were taken back out in a jar! There are the SMALL honey bee types that don't sting but i do not know if you have them around KS; they are the size of a housefly but are definitely a bee. Actually like them! (don't mind the normal ones either anymore) Maybe a new hobby in the future for ya? Raising bees? yikes! I would work with Beckys' idea of using hand pollinating....
:D
Morning Glories 2008 #23
Drum Rolllllll please!!!!
Y'all know how much I love the Spanish Flag MG vine (Ipomoea lobata) ... even though I have had such a difficult time getting seeds not to mention growing this elusive vine in my garden! I actually purchased some seeds from Onalee's and look what is blooming along my picket fence...
This vine isn't nearly as large as it should be, but I have BLOOMS!!!! Yay! I LOVE this vine! It is one of my favorite MGs to grow. But it is an elusive vine for me as it sometimes will grow and other times won't ... and I have yet to be able to produce and collect seeds from any of my blooming vines! :-( I am bound and determined to eventually see these vines produce seeds for me! :-) I need to send my little hummers over to pollinate this bad boy! :-)
No work today because it is election day and my school is a polling place. I am off to see my mother today ...
I leave you with photos taken this morning of all the critters eating breakfast at the bird/squirrel feeding station. They are a true joy to watch! I had the pleasure of seeing the hummers too zipping around near my head as I was photographing the MGs posted above. It is a good start to the day!
Be sure to vote if you haven't already! (I voted on Saturday to avoid the lines today! ;-))
PS - Thanks Darren for the compliments on my Moonflowers. They do look a lot like shimmery satin in real life. The fragrance is amazing, too! They are on my Top 10 Favorite MG list!
Congrats Becky on the Spanish Flag...that is a tough one!! Love the "Breakfast is Served" photo!! What editing program are you using? I like the effects!
Enjoy your day with your Mom!♥
Is that what that is Called??? Tropicman gave me a whole planter full of that, he called it firecracker plant. it is down here in my basement blooming away! WOW! I love all your mg pics, Becky and guess what?? I have a moonflower seedling popped its head up and a sprout from the purple blizzard you sent me! They are in the plastic water bottle planters and will be hanging in the north windows all winter.. Thanks so much.. do u have a pic of the purple blizzard you sent me?
keep those pics coming.. I love them .. wish I could move to your house LOL
Darren: I kyped some mexican petunia from theneighbors and rooted it all out.. the potting soil is just plain MG potting soil, but I add a cup of coffee grounds and two cups of perlite to the soil and mix it up for my water bottle planters..
Beautiful blooms Becky. Love your I. lobata, it was once called, Mina lobata.
Becky - do you dry and save your pollen? have you tried pollinating with a saved pollen from another bloom?
btw....
1. Congrats on the I. lobata - mine was infested with aphids and I could not control it..plus it wouldn't thrive inside the house and was already dyeing =(. I wanted to see them bloom like pictures on the internet but they are very hard to get to bloom (for me atleast)!
2. I love your white fencing - I don't see much of that around here in the suburbs, our fences are mostly stained. =)
Eliz
I had a wonderful visit with my mother. My oldest son joined me to visit her. And of course we went shopping for her, did her laundry, and hung out and talked politics! :-) She's doing pretty good right now. I had picked up some fried chicken for her and she ate really good. She has been eating most all the food that I buy for her every week. :-)
Ronnie - The program I use for the picture collages is Art Explosion Scrapbook Factory Deluxe Version 4 by Nova Development. http://www.novadevelopment.com/Products/Scrapbook_Factory_Deluxe_4/default.aspx
It is actually a digital scrapbook program that allows me to convert custom pages into a digital photo for print or sharing.
Debra - There is a plant called Firecracker Plant http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1334/ which has small red blooms, but it is not a vine. I have that plant as well in my garden, though it was transplanted and not doing so well currently. Here is what the purple blizzard blooms look like: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/36571/
Good luck growing the vines indoors! I hope your Moonflower vine does great and blooms for you! The blooms are huge! Truly impressive! I can't believe how many seed pods you have on the vine in the photo! WOW!
Jackie - I looked up information about Spanish Flag by googling using Mina Lobata! LOL! That's the name I have always used for it. :-)
Eliz - I have not tried saving pollen. I usually go around my entire yard wherever there are MGs growing and hand pollinate whatever I can! So I rarely have any pollen left to consider saving. I am sorry your I. lobata vines don't grow very well for you. :-(
Thanks everyone for the nice compliments on my blooms. Don't know how much longer these vines will continue, but I am gonna enjoy them as long as a I can. :-)

Thanks Becky I will check it out.
Debra what type / wattage lights do you use for your indoor vines and how far away...I have not really done indoor growth for MGs~ if possible i might try it too. I have a patio actually but there are no outlets for lights (bad workmanship on the previous owner) so no bright lights for terrariums. Used to use those for my ferns indoors...now since I am no longer apartment bound I can use EARTH to grow plants and lol I am turning around and thinking of growing MGs indoors...Irony!
Becky ~ Great pics ! I really like that Lobata, I would think about trying some seeds from Onalees too....
Great Blooms Gardenpom! How late are yours staying open?? I get some all day Glories in shaded areas, it is wonderful!
:D
Mine were still open a while ago, mostly because it is cooler and cloudy today.
