Well, thanks everyone - it was exciting. Don't know if the winner was a DGer or not.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Vi yes, I'm Karen, Darkmoondreamer! I post daily on the She's about to......thread here!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Well Karen, thanks so very much!!! I'm sure she'll be a star in Texas :>}

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Congrats, Karen!!! How exciting!! Please tell us about this beauty...I'm looking forward to getting one (finger's crossed) this spring. Vi, will you have more ebay listings available or was this the only one?

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Viola, I just payed you with PayPal. Can't wait to get it! Thanks again ☺

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Gee, what else is there to know? I wish I could thank the man who first gave her to me again. Her very first bloom won't split for some reason and the more heat and humidity she gets, the more she splits. I love her most when she has the green ribbons, then they turn yellow, then almost disappear. I love to photograph her, but when it's windy she really does does dance!

She is certainly more of a hussy than I ever thought--I always try to deadhead as much as possible and somehow missed those 7-8 pods this year, she was just too big. What I like 2nd best (next to her scent) is that bugs just don't seem to bother her--except the dreaded spider mites :( My biggest worry is how to move her with all her pods. I have my fingers crossed that she survives the next 2 days of low temps--right now she's covered in Christmas lites--very fitting I think!

I had run an ad in our Market bulletin and had a man come out today, he got to see her and drooled--she even had scent at 5PM. I think he'll be a new DGer. Altho he didn't get her, he still bought $50 worth of brugs! See, this thread did change my luck! Next stop a real job!!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Viola you mentioned earlier that you had left a brug in the ground one winter (whole stalk covered somehow or cut down?) Right now, all my Brugs are in the greenhouse in pots but will next spring be put in the ground. I think I am going to try the bubble wrap tomorrow night on 2 NOIDS without cutting, it will be 36 here. Only drawback is our temps fluctuate so wildly here during this time of year.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Karen, you must call me Vi, lol!

Just a sheet over them, or the Christmas lights will work for a short frost. My temps fluctuate almost as much as yours--usually our first real frost isn't till mid Nov. Most of my brugs overwinter well in the ground with mulch-- but a few are lost.

I will Dmail you--lots of mail right now!

Congrat Viola & Karen, She is beautiful!

Vi, I just had a chance to visit your website tonight. I was reading about care for brugs and your website mentioned that after a brug is in the ground for 2-3 years, they loose their vigor. What do you mean by this? Growth? Flowers? And what can you do to help it?

I am asking because I am new to this. My next door neighbor owns one and it's in the ground. It dies down to the ground every year and comes back bigger and taller every year. Anyway, I am starting some brugs and I had planned on planting some of them in the ground as I already have too many container plants (Plumeria-addict).

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Congrats Vi and Karen! I am so happy for you both! Can't wait to see her planted in Texas ground, I am so glad I got to see who won her! ;) Good Luck on Job Hunting, Vi, I know there is one out there somewhere!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Lili, perhaps it was the combination of lack of rainfall, and heat with our clay soil. I thought I had ammended the soil well, but most of my friends here in GA had the same problem--brugs were slow growing and many did not bloom this year. I plan to enrich the soil again with more organic matter before planting inground next year. I only know that I was not alone. Grant you, I have had some brugs in the ground for 5 years that return --they just did not thrive this year as they normally do. As you must have read, I have keyed my site to local Georgia growers.

I experimented with brugs in pots under a mister syster this year and was highly rewarded--Star Dancer was just one of many that really thrived with this method. Once again if you think to mimic their original gowing habits in S. America, they like humid organic conditions with cool nights. The mister system allowed them to cool off I believe, and I had failed to keep the ground well ammended.

I'll just be glad when this drought ends!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

To address the pod issue, I have no clue, I am not an expert and have absolutely no experience with hybridizing or producing seed. Perhaps someone should post another thread about it, sorry. I know I need to do more research!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Thank you Vi for that information. We've not done too bad with rain this year in comparison to last year. That was horrible - last year. Although, I think the temperature was cooler in early June. My oldest Plumeria did not bloom at all this year. I know it's not a container problem as it's in a very large container that I repotted last year. I am so sad to be hauling it in the garage soon w/o any bloom this year.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

I hear you! I have 4 Plummies, only 1 bloomed and one of the others just got her inflo! The one that bloomed I kept going in the basement--going to do all for the rest of them. One is now up to about 5' and no sign of inflo.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Morning! Just getting back here. Congrats Karen on winning her. I was wondering if that was you who had jumped in. I know ya gonna be excited when ya get her and get her going. : ) Glad it was Dg'er that got her.

Got so excited, dumped some of the popcorn, will get the vacumn out right away Davis. LOL

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahh the plumies - I was just saying how sad it was as I was bringing them in to notice at least 2 had 2+ inflos on them. Not sure if they'll abort or bloom but it saddens me they waited this long...mercy I've had those for 2-3 years with NO blooms and they pick autumn to try...grrrr!!!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Chantell, where do you overwinter you plumerias? Mine go in a heated greenhouse. I had two bloom in the greenhouse this spring before I put them outside. I have a rooted cuttings with the beginnings of an inflorescence. I hope it blooms. Even if it doesn't, it will branch so that's a plus.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OH to have a greenhouse...then I'd REALLY be in trouble...LOL. They go in my living room and bdrm...yes, I'm serious. That's why I had to share with folks b/c mine had put on so much growth - then when it was time to come in...yikes!!!!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

See? Feelin' my "pain" aren't ya? "Dear Lord, help me to like SMALL plants next year...please and umm, can ya make em' hardy as well?"

Linden, TN

Vi and Karen, congratulations... How exciting for you both... wow.. I was so wanting to bid, but it got a bit beyond my means... maybe some other time, eh?? I will be watching for another little chunk at auction though to be sure.. =0)

Brug Hugs,
Carolyn

Chrissy, that link is tabbed. Go to Communities and scroll down to Tabbed pages to find it. You're right, it's a great thread!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Wonderful thread, thank you!!! LOOK at all your babies in those cups!!! I'll have to wait a bit over here to do that - have seeds in closed jar in fridge just waiting...

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Escaped the frost last nite thank goodness but tonite is supposed to be colder and no wind. But today it's windy as heck as I try to cut and wrap the others, brrrr.

If you find the thread on how to tell when the pod's ready, please LMK. I gleaned over the thread but really not sure.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Brought mine all in last night...too dang cold even out front!!!
Here's some links Vi:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/gardening/huber/5712443.html
"Seed pods are ready to harvest when:
... the stem (peduncle) that attaches it to the plant, begins to yellow
... the pod itself begins to yellow
... the pod is soft and not firm and crisp
... the pod's surface feels and looks lumpy
The mature seed coat (pericarp), is light tan to dark brown in color. When dried the texture is best described as corky but in appearance resembles a wood chip.
Immature pericarps are white and the texture resembles Hominy. These seeds will frequently still germinate if you plant them immediately. White coat seeds deteriorate quickly!"

Disputanta, VA(Zone 7a)

I wanted to throw in my congrats to Karen too. I just knew a DGer would land this sweetheart. Make sure to let us know how she progresses for you. Ok?

Thanks to everyone posting these awesome links. Really great info now & will be in the future too. Are there any stickies on top of this thread that shares this? If not, should be.

The pods in my picture were ready to harvest ...they go sort of softish instead of hard and green ...the stalk starts to go a yellow hay colour. It takes about 4 months ...here in Australia anyway for the tiny green pod to grow big and then ripen. You can tell if the cross has been successful by watching the little green ovary ...it gets bigger almost straight away,You do the cross early in the morning or in the cooler dusk hours and make sure you are generous with the pollen ...about three generous swipes. Secure the bloom from any other critters messing with your cross.
If you are pushed for the growing season (short) try to source the above Y cuttings, because they will flower months earlier as they have already gone through their "puberty" ^_^

Thank you all for the congrats! I am proud I was able to help Vi out, and also get a "one of a kind" Brug! I can't wait to recieve it ^_^

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

And soon you shall!

The past few days I've been running like a madwoman trying to get everything in. I was not able to move Star and a few others so my yard looked like a cross between Halloween and Christmas. Sheet clad brugs danced in the wind and the big ones in front were lit like Christmas trees--now to savor the last of the blooms while the warmth comes back.

I have felt brug-drugged the past two nights, is it possible to get too much scent? Maya was blooming in her big pot in the LR and I had branches of Star Dancer blooms in the kitchen and bedroom--Whew, how strong it was!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Vi, I hauled all my plants in Monday as we had 33 degree Monday night and 30 Tuesday night. It's too much work now to take out, so they are all in for the winter. I hope all the brugs cuttings that I started will make it through the winter. I killed one already! I went soft and squishy. Too much water? I only gave it 2 inches of water.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Betty, finally had time to get a side shot of Star, her blooms are bit smaller this time.

Vi, you are so lucky to have such beautiful blooms and plants. I hope someday I will have some too.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Vi, I thought I had posted a comment to your photo, but I must have forgotten to push send because I don't see the post. Thanks for posting the photo. She sure has a lot of suaveolens in her. Her regular blooms must be huge. How are her seed pods coming along?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes she has a lot of Suave, but I like that she stays open so long in a vase when cut--not just the branch. If those traits pass over, it would be another wonderous turn, wouldn't it? Yes, she has a very large bloom. I had posted all her data on one of the brug sites and was dismayed to find it all gone, I measured everything by their format and thought it would be safe there. Right now her bloom is 7" wide including the recurve and hangs 11" from the branch.

Her seed pods are apparentlly still growing! I wrapped them from a possible freeze and could not get over the difference a day made. Holy cow, glad you're here for advice, lol. No wonder I never had children. I still don't have a clue how long I'll have to wait.

Just pray with me that I find someone to help me move her to the basement before a killing freeze. I had it set up for last weekend but my lawn tractor died :(

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Hi Vi
I'm not here often any more, brugs don't do well in my shade yard and I've sort of given up on them. Can't believe GARU was 5 years ago. I didn't get the shot you were talking about, but did get this one of the center piece.
