The Crazy Chicken Crew and Their Titles

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

ohhh boy! I mean... yes ma'am! (in my most serious army like secretive voice) hehehe
I am off to find out what they look like and learn their behavior as to spot any deviants! Must take my job very serious! I wont let you down. I may mis spell a few (hundred) words but I will be there!

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

Oo. Must go check into Dutch Bantams now! Yay! DH is out of town this week too.... Ahem, I mean, I'll be ready Ma'am.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

These are the possible Dutch Bantam life form varieties:
Black Tailed Buff
Light Brown
Black
Silver

Citra, FL

OMG, the chicken butt wiggle.....I tried it and almost fell down....coordination not my strong suit, Im afraid.

Having major issues with upcoming Covert Hatches because.....nothings hatching. Ive been trying to get some fertile splash rock eggs, I think Ive set around 25 eggs, not a single one fertile. I have a feeling Im going to have to go into Hatching Interruptus Mode....gaahhhhh!!!!!! unless my EE's pick up the slack. If not, it will be the first time since January that Ive not had eggs in the bator. Woe is me.....sniff...sniff....

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

This site http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGD/Dutch/BRKDutch.html shows "Black, gold and columbian" chicks (descriptions). Silver I think I can recognize? But buff and light brown? Is "Gold" light brown as chicks or the black tailed buffs?

OOooo they get into creme there too.... Sure you have no chance of creme in there?

Lodi, United States

I have a bunch (well 12) Dutch Bantam from a very nice source. Great fertility. And some Millefleur coming. But I haven't got a clue about the colors. If I post a pic--could someone help? Two are light brown....the rest are varying shades of silver and darker brown. Extremely pert and precocious.

Moxon--you can practice naming colours on mine, before you have your own!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh cool! Color practice! I'm all over that! Post the pix!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Jenks, Sewincircle, Fla_Chick, Wren, Dahlianut & Any Others!!!

If any of our crazy chicken crew members are not aware of the Official Poultry Holiday Swap thread, run over there now and quickly read it. We have a last-minute request from someone to join, and if I can get a couple more participants, we can make it work. It's not a very complicated swap. Take a look and see if you want to join - I'll make this special time limit exception!

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/919590/

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Crappola Claire with the border holiday thing if I participated now my buddy would maybe get it by summer (snort). CGA Jenks, I'm all ears about genetics that encourage bad hair in fowls. Special Agent SewinCircle (doesn't that have a luvly ring to it ^_^) Ninja Dahlianut ready to provide assistance. I've been authorized to lock and load blue smarties if anyone one threatens your inspections. Note to all: I believe the regulations require hankies and kneepads for the celebratory butt wiggling chicken dances. From personal experience if you wear bare feets you don't fall down as much when you wiggle.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I left a message on the other thread. I will be up in Ga for half of the month-unless I can escape-probable with out a computer.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Well it's for New Years, not Christmas, which gives extra time! I haven't sent my parents presents home to Halifax yet. I'd best get my butt in gear!

I better watch out for those blue smarties - they sting! By the way, Ninja Dahlianut, here in the US of A, Smarties are not Smarties. You remember at Halloween in Canada how people give out those little rolls of pastel colored candies in a cellophane wrapped tube and we call them "Rockets" in Canada? (at least, we did in NS and ON) Well, here, those are called Smarties. And there are no REAL smarties here.

And for the US folks, Smarties in Canada are like M&Ms but slightly flatter and better tasting. For which see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_(Nestl%C3%A9)
However, the blue ones are of questionable aesthetic quality.

LOL over the butt wiggle dance suggestions - excellent - safety first!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OMG there are NO REAL SMARTIES in the USA???? ok I just added another load to my suitcase for my trip to AZ and NM this winter( I'm bringing Canadian Rocky rocks for sure ^_^). I will bring the joy of smarties. I will be a Smartie Fairy. ps the blue ones are just plain wrong IMHO as smarties and I will remove them all with tweezers before I come. They do make good ammo though. Well if 'Rockets' are 'Smarties' what are 'Sweet Tarts'. Tell me you have 'Sweet Tarts' otherwise it will be just too sad.

Lodi, United States

We have SweetTarts.

Once, when I lived in England, we were warned not to attempt to bring Smarties into the US because the red ones had an unapproved dye in them. They told us a whole container load had been impounded in New York and they had picked out the red ones one by one. I cannot verify the truth of the individual removal.

Blue in any candy is an abomination. They were introduced in the 70s--as were so many abominations.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Indeed, it is the sad truth, Dahlianut. My mother sends me Smarties on a regular basis. She also sends me Wunderbar and Aero and Coffee Crisp bars. :-) Oh, and hickory sticks. I just LOVE hickory sticks, and they are not here.

Plus, the kit kat is made with a different chocolate. It is startlingly different if you taste them side-by-side. Then I found an article that explained about it and how the Canadian chocolate palate prefers a darker and slightly more brittle chocolate, while the American palate prefers a milder and more waxy consistency. Go figure.

Oh, and Kraft Dinner isn't Kraft Dinner here. It's Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. If you say you ate KD for lunch, nobody knows what you mean. AND, the cheese mix is different. It is WAY milder here.

Friends and family send me KD from time to time too. Old habits die hard.

The English smarties are best because the orange ones have orange flavored chocolate in them. Yummy!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OMG This is the official Smarty Song:
♪♪♪When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?
Do you suck them very slowly,
Or crunch them very fast?
Eat that candy-coated chocolate,
But tell me when I ask,
When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last? ♪♪♪

I'm so relieved you have Sweet Tarts. Obviously there has only been a minor shift in the matrix. I have heard of the red food dye thing though. Apparently it is a serious allergy. ok I will pick out the blue ones AND the red ones. Glad you're with me Catscan on the blue candy thing. It's just plain wrong.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think we should have an International Candy Summit where all the heads of state converge and share candy (except blue candy). The world would be a far better place methinks. hmmmm Note to self: think about becoming a head of state for the international candy tasting factor.

Lodi, United States

I will sustain you in your bid for World Wide Candy Supremacy, dahlianut--may I be a minister without portfolio and travel the world in search of candies, sweets, dulce, barfi, for you delectation? You can see I am already fluent in candy in several languages. I've been preparing all my life for this position.

In the UK Snickers are Marathon Bars! And Yorkies are for Boys! ( I still don't understand that).

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Could I do that? Could I BE the Secretary of Candy? I will admit that I'm very confused over US candy which is why I would so need a Director General (better than Minister cuz then you get funded for candy searching and tasting Catscan whooo hooo) to assist. Is this an apointment? Do I have to run for election? Can I self declaire? ( Note: how I purposely misspelled 'declaire' to get Claire on the Queen spelling thing and then TADA! joining the venture! I'm so brilliant. (probably not but it sounds good)).

Lodi, United States

I think that even our redoubtable CPO Moxon is suffering petty fatigue with so many challenges to her authority. I will throw in something here to try to draw her out as well.

I, of coarse, will be happy to be whatever you feel would best serve the mission of clarifying world wide candy nomenclature, dahlianut. Why stop there? There is a universe out there. You could be the Supreme Universal Secretary of Candy!

If no one knows about the election--I think you can just self-declare. I will second your nomination!

I know very little about Australian sweets. Perhaps one of our Antipodean members could clue us in? Arrange a field tour?

Now for the Poultry Purists among us:

Why are British store bought eggs so much larger than American ones? Our Jumbos are their standard size. Is this a North American phenomenon or just US? This has bothered me for years.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Catscan do you think its like the European veggie phenomenom? UNBELIEVABLE tomatos, beans, etc. etc. that we never see the size or taste of in NA. I leave you with artichokes. OMG have you eaten a European artichoke?? I rest my case on the fabby European veggie thing. Perhaps theres also a chicken/egg thing? I will ask my European buds and report pack.

Lodi, United States

Yes! An answer in sight!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I sent a Dmail to my buds in Ireland and France. I think those guys will have the scoop

Lodi, United States

But will they believe we eat such minuscule eggs? And where do their smaller eggs go?

I've read that the smallest commercial size egg in the US is the peewee--and that is sold to commercial bakeries.

Somewhere we must have a huge national stockpile of super colossal eggs.

I will be very interested in your friends' explanations.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Lets get the Asian candy in there. The Asian gummys are yummy!!!!!! I will also volunteer as a taste tester.

I do not like the waxy chocolate of NA candy.

Wren

Citra, FL

Fortunately, I am stationed near the Russell Stover outlet store in Wildwood, which I make a periodic stop. OMG...if you are ever near there, you won't believe what you can get. Last time I was there, I got the huge heart shaped boxes of candy that you buy on Valentines day (I mean huge, like put your arms over your head and touch your fingertips....that large.....for $2.00) I got some and gave some to all my friends....in Oct. Told them I was just a little late....no one complained.

Ill have to try and practise that chicken dance with some padding. I dont have any knee pads, Ill have to just tape some Kotex to my knees and elbows. My butt has plenty of padding already.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I know where that Russell Stover outlet is, Also there is a peach orchard near there. Note to self time for a road trip.
Sandy

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Citra FL has now been entered in the Great Book of Lists under the chocolate catagory. mmmmmmmm chocolate mmmmmmmmm. Rosie from Ireland reports that they have super-chickens but they are grown for meat production not eggs so she has no clue about the big egg thing. There's a dahlianut in the UK I will ask him too.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

There is another Russel Strover outlet off interstate 95 at I think exit 92!!!! Been there.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Here is the scoop from wallaby1 in the UK. Too funky weird about the cucumbers!!!

'I think the 'medium' or standard size egg was 2 ounces here, over that is large and under is small. There are machines for weighing too!

[HYPERLINK@www.solwayfeeders.com]

The Dept. of Food and Fisheries as I think it's called here has always had strict regulations in place for as long as I know, and the European Union has taken control of many of those Standards so some things have had to change such as weights to Kilos instead of Pounds, even the long green cucumbers had to be straight! I read recently they were changing that so 'bent' ones could be sold, lol.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

CPO Moxon is completely overwhelmed and stunned by the sudden flurry of information on international food standards and such. And then, CPO Moxon nearly fell off her chair laughing about Fla_Chick with Kotex taped to her knees, doing the butt wiggle dance. This has just about made my morning!

Catscan, your ridiculous spelling of coarse instead of course is quite unacceptable. Twenty lashes with a chicken feather.

Dahlianut - you made me homesick with the Smarties song. I nearly got a tear.

Where do Rosie's 3.2 ounce eggs fall into the scheme of things. I can't close my egg cartons when her eggs are in them.

Dahlianut and Catscan - if you wish to change your official titles, please make up your minds and I will approve them . Officially of course.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think the answer lies with the 'large chicken' egg here http://www.solwayfeeders.com/ProductsResultsList1.asp?cat=37
I have sent an email to SolwayFeeders asking for the breeds of super-chickens that make the big eggs. We will get to the bottom of the mystery.

Clarkson, KY

2.18698 oz = 62 grams?! My,my,my. 90.7184 grams = 3.2oz Hmmmm.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ok here's what googleguy knows:
US large egg 57 grams in shell, 50 grams without shell. He says that standard eggs are smaller cuz the chickens are kept in small cages (3-7 hens per cage) so there is not enough room for the hens to exercise. That is too sad if it is true :(

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

She's an egg laying fool, my Rosie! I don't know how she gets those things out of her, but she does it every day!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Rosie is obviously a super-chicken.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

She is indeed. She is my animal rescue league hen. She was picked up downtown wandering about and was taken to city animal control. Then she went to the rescue league. I adopted her from there. She was horribly skinny and missing feathers. She started out on daily cottage cheese, oatmeal, and chopped grapes and tomatoes. She was tremendously coddled and cuddled! Then, about 3 weeks after I got her, she laid her first egg, and I nearly squealed when I saw it. I never even expected her to lay after all she'd been through (including having been debeaked on both top and bottom right back to the nostrils) but she is my best and most consistent layer, and also follows me around like a puppy. Just love her!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

And this just in from France:

"Because the British are weird?
Because their chickens are huge?
Because eggs are one thing that hasn't been "Big-Gulped"? (Although, since the standard American breakfast consists of eggs with trimmings and the standard European breakfast rarely gas an egg, that would be odd!)
Because the British take every chance they can get to fly in the face of EU standards?
Because NA chicken factories crowd the birds so closely that they can't produce normal-sized eggs?

I've no idea!
I have noticed that I usually have to buy "Large" eggs in the States to equate to what I know as "Moyen" (i.e. literally "medium", nut maybe that is UK "standard").
Here you can see a comparison:

European Sizes US Sizes

"Petit/Small" is 71 g

Why is a British/Canadian gallon bigger than a US gallon?
Why do so many small men wear big mustaches?

Go figure!"

Ain't he a hoot? ^_^ Note ma francais ami is originally from Spokane WA so is an American in disguise. Too funny.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Excellent questions, none of which I have answers for. :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I gave him back: 'Why do balding people do the comb over?" It's an international phenomenoma and it fools no one. That will keep him pondering for awhile tee hee.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I am back!!! I got logged off and the thing would not let me log back on. I was frustrated!
Sooooo, what did I miss, okay egg size, uh huh!
Oh holiday exchange...is it too late???? If not sighn me up...
cucumbers, UK,... alright! I am all caught up. phew! that was stressfull.
Any babies? Oh ya, tomorrow right? ;0!
