Happy birthday Dave47!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Carrie - I think it was a red maple. Question: Why didn't the groom go on and give her the ring?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

???? No confidence? Didn't know how to say it the right way? Every time he called me, it was 'well, what about this, way #17?' It had to be The Best Wedding Proposal in Recorded History, not just a wedding proposal like when ordinary people like you or me get married!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Oh No! I missed your Birthday! And it is my favorite sister's birthday as well. I hope it was happy and that you will have very many more!

I missed it too! Hey, but I'm not gonna skip wishing you a Happy Birthday, even though I'm late! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE!!!!

Big hugs and kisses to you!!

Here's Superman taking off to ensure your winter is bright and happy!

DAVE!!!! Happy Belated Birthday! It seems like years ago when this forum started! Isn't it nice to see how it has grown?

Glad you had a good day.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Superman has dreds? I never knew....

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Harper, Seandor, Anita (my first DG friend!) & Yankee,
Thank you! Belated wishes gladly accepted.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

How are you doing, dear friend?

I think I have an obsessive-compulsive disorder . . . I keep collecting seeds - and swapping them . . . and starting them! This weekend I started lily seeds and monkshood.

Do you have any suggestions how to stop this insanity, Dave47? I mean, it's not like I have anymore room for plants!

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

I'm not only belated but tardy, dilatory and (considering the state of my mulch pile) posthumus. Happy birthday anyway from a neighbor!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Don, Thank you!

Seandor, first you must admit you are powerless over seed...
I'm doing well. Election obsessed at the moment.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, aren't we all?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Quoting:
Election obsessed at the moment.

tell me about it, too bad we're not allowed any political discussions. I'm just over the top fuming about something and I can't even discuss it on here, NUTS!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I am heading up to Vt in the morning to vote. DH will vote in Ma on Tuesday. And yes, we are obsessed as well. I have the BBC on at the moment to try to escape for a bit and hear some world news. Not so great out there either. Only place where I can escape being a news junkie is in the garden. I have all the final cleaning to finish when we return from VT so that will get me through Tuesday day. Our DS did an absentee ballot. Hope it gets counted. I still remember listening to the election returns on the radio with my parents in the 50's before we had a TV. But I loved listening to the conventions the most. I still prefer the radio to TV for many events. Patti

Until this year, I have never followed an election. I can tell you every "squeak" they have made. I will never follow another one - totally insane.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Ah! but this is historic - regardless of your political persuation. ^_^

'enough said about politics before we get ourselves in trouble. ^_^

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I heard that blue was the new black but had not heard about Dave being the new Harper. If this is the case...well Happy Birthday again, Dave.
Laurel

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Pink is the new black and so is brown. Unless you work for UPS.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

On the way to Vt today I saw a two toned UPS truck. Not all brown. Whatz up with that?

Yes please extend more unB-Day greetings to Our Election Obsessed Dave47. ( OEOD47). I voted today! Felt good. I love sitting at a long table in our little town building that is smaller than most homes, with a paper ballot and a big jar of yellow pencils. No rush, no lines and very friendly. I suspect on Tuesday there will be long lines. Patti

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

We can do that in MA?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Patti, we are thrilled because we only waited two and a half hours to vote this past Monday. Last election we waited five and a half hours. Polls are open from seven to seven here and 25% of Georgia has voted so far. That's about a million and a half people. Yeah us!
L

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

No Carrie, I am in Vt voting.

Laurel, long time in a line! Good for you for perservering. Patti

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Happy birthday, Dave. Hope it was a good one. Did you get any new plants?
Sorry to have missed the birthday threads.
This will be an exciting week. Maine has early voting also. I went this week.
I will be watching the reults from the Dominican Republic as usual. Eight years ago, we never got any sleep.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Cindie,
Thanks! I did receive 2 nursery giftcards for my b'day.

You have a tradition of watching the Dominican Rep.?? Tell us more.

I think this is a welcome change (to discuss election stress w/o politics). We've all heard the same arguements a million times. We can agree to wish for what is best for our country and each of us will privately think we know what that is!

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Actually Dave, I phrased that wrong.
I am the one who will be IN the Dominican Republic when the US results come in. I will watch CNN while there. We are typically on vacation that week and have to vote early. heehee. Sorry.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Cyndie, I did think that was what you meant. It was me that was unclear. Cool vacation tradition!
Do you get away in the thick of winter too? Or is this your annual swan song for warmth?

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave-okay you got me. ;)
At the moment, this is the only time we go away.
Since we didn't get much summer here, I am really looking forward to it! We would like to do a traditional get away in the dead of winter, but haven't managed it to get a second trip in.
When you plan for Feb-March, there is always the weather to contend with and this way, we are pretty sure our flight won't get canceled. No snow here yet, but about an hour and a half away at the ski slopes, they have it.
We usually run into a few Americans while there, but typically, it is Canadians, Europeans, and South Americans. We love it.
We, too, enjoy just putting the election stress away. Tuesday evening we will tune in.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Happy November Birthday, Dave!!! Only 11 more months to the real thing.

We are headed to Michigan tomorrow for a funeral on Monday. Be back on Tuesday in time to vote.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hey Dave! Remember I am the one with DSL and rabbit ears? No more! I am officially Miss Technology! I now have cable with a DVR, a cell phone (thanks to my Dad who sent me his old one with a 1,000 minute card) and a GPS! No more driving around and around in NJ looking for the off ramp with a car full of plants!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

You go Cat!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

But do you have a Facebook?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Does having a face and a book count?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I am frugal. Saving my face and book for a rainy day.
L

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

So Laurel, What kind of book are you saving for a rainy day?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Cyndie, I've been saving "Salt". "Cod" was such a good book. Mark Kurlansky wrote both. Kurlansky also wrote a book of short stories about the Caribbean, "The White Man in the Tree". Maybe a good travel book for you?

Okay, off to the big city.
Laurel

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Got "Salt" got "Cod" and my DH makes a mean cod fritter. Sounds like a Sunday morning brunch with two great books in front of the woodstove. Love his writing. Patti

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Baccalau, Patti? The woodstove was reinstalled yesterday. Maybe a fire next week. It's 74 degrees today. Hope to finish up "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" in front of our new fireplace.

Cyndie, another great travel book is "Memoir In Antproof Case", by Mark Halpern. Patti most likely knows this one too.

Dave, when exactly is the "thick of winter"? It's not on my calendar.
L

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

It is when I am saying "I am thick of winter"

Wow! you know Baccalau too!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Too funny that there are a bunch of dried cod lovers, Baccalau, on this thread. Yummy for sure, especially when they have those little whiskers that protrude off the fried balls. I like them with a little garlic aioli with cilantro and capers and lemon. Love the little wooden boxes the salt cod comes in.

As for Mark Halpern, I sold a ton of his books when I had the stores. DH reads him. But I don't think he has "Memoir In Antproof Case". I haven't read him. These days and really for many years now, I seem to read mostly non fiction. I am pretty dull, but my life seems to be surrounded with people that are so full of drama that I don't want to read bound fiction, rather just follow the lives of those who cross my path. No doubt at some point I will rejoin the reading world of fine fiction and began to enjoy it again as I once did.

I am reading a light little essay collection by Julia Reed, "Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena" at the moment. Is that you Ms Maypop? I read her, "The House on First Street: My New Orleans Story" as I am reading New Orleans related books at the moment as our DS moved there to cook. We are spending Christmas with him, so I have a big stack to read before we go. I need to dip back into the fiction world and reread some of the great NOLA writers. Can we all scream, STELLA!!! Patti

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Happy Birthday Dave! May your candidate win!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Dear Dave,
My Dave {Davallia feejeensis} and I send birthday greetings. Sorry they're late, but then, Dave moves kinda slow on his rabbit feet. Hope you had a good day anyhow. Understand about the school play, my DD is in the band at college, it's marching season, and I am still a band parent after 10 years!
Happy Birthday!
Martha
