Time for a new thread...here is a link to the previous one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/908607/#new .
We still get a few Hummers each day but they just eat and run!! I wish they would stay for a few days and rest up for their long journey south. It seems like only yesterday they were going north!!
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 16
Thanks Marna and I love that pic with the sweet little traveling Hummer and that lovely hanging plant! I haven't gotten any pics of the migrating ones at all. The regulars were used to us but the little travelers fly off as soon as they see us!
Oooo, so nice Rose!!
I am getting visitors but the show up just as it is getting dark, so no pics.
Nanny, I'm so glad that you captured hummer wars on the other thread. I NEVER have more than one hummer at the feeder at a time, and the only time I have more than one in the garden is when they haven't spotted each other!
Beautiful start to the new thread Rose!
This morning I was taking a picture of a butterfly with the morning sun behind me and this little lady flew right up! I can't believe the wings came out. I guess I have to have perfect lighting to get the wings in the shot.
Wow thats an excellent shot Elphaba!
WOWWWWW!!!! That is gorgeous!!
Ditto on the fab-oo-ness of that pix. love the little feet.
Well, no travelers today or yesterday that I know of.
Elphaba...What a gorgeous shot...the one I've been trying to get but will have to wait until next year...no hummers today..boo hoo!!
fantastic shots all... you MUST enter that one in the contest Pelle
Ya'll are getting to be excellent photographers. Beautiful pics.
Well lord knows we pratice enough!! LOL
The second one is a good one even without the wings Elphaba! I think it does depend alot on the lighting and your angle.
I did have a another visitor yesterday but I didn't have the camera handy. Never know when the travlers will show up! Last year we had groups...this year it seems to be one by one.
We do like to practice!! I had a Hummer this morning but no pic...I feel bad when they see me and fly off. I'm not stalking them or anything..just gotta be outside sometime. I have a feeder in the front and one in the back and still several flowers in bloom so hopefully the little ones will find something before they fly off!!
Rose, it's so good to see you back and posting your beautiful photos.
Elphaba, that first shot is a stunner.
Who still has Hummers? I haven't heard any lately, but that isn't saying much, I haven't been looking and listening... I still have my feeders out and am wondering when to bring them in for the winter.
Hi nanbernier. I have taken my feeders down. I was only getting one or two females stopping by anyway. I guess the males go on ahead?
It's gonna be a long time until March! I'll miss you little hummers
I had only been seeing the juvies and females too. I guess the last one I saw was around the 5th.
I haven't seen any for 3 or 4 days but they are still being spotted north of our area so I am keeping the feeders out. If they don't use the feeders at least we still have many flowers in bloom due to no frost yet (and I'm glad about that)! I miss the Hummers too...it seems strange without them!
I haven't seen any since last week, but the feeder is there if they show up.
Five minutes after I typed the above, I went outside and there was a hummer on the Black & Blue!!
Great!
Not me. last one 10-7
Saw my last one on Monday 10/13. Keeping all feeders up for a couple weeks, then one I can see from my office window will stay up all winter. There have been overwintering rufous spotted in GA, so I am hoping, hoping.....
I saw my last hummer on Sept 20. :(
That's beautiful Frank!
That's cool!
Waaaaahhhh I haven't seen any hummers in at least a week. I thought they would stay here a little longer. And I just refilled the feeder, too :(
None spotted since the 15th..
Mine disappeared too after those three days of rain last week. Darn it! They should have stayed b/c the plants were really happy about the rain and have been blooming their head off!
I think mine are long gone also...it's been about a week since the last one...
Migration must be a particularly hard time for you, wondering if the birds that have been frequently your place for months on end will make it to the wintering grounds, then if they do, will they make it back again come spring. I imagine that in your minds eye you are mentally following their journeys and wishing them God speed every inch of the way.
The Mayor created a contest to get ideas for what to do with all the Hurrican Ike debris. I thought about suggesting making an island in the Gulf that would weaken future storms and provide a rest stop for the hummers crossing the gulf! Insane, I know and undoubtedly envinronmentally crazy. I didn't make the suggestion, but I do worry about them. I've read that the slightest head wind can prevent them from making it across.
I'm still keeping all my feeders up. I have a juvie and a female that I know of. The purple finches are here and they enjoy the sugar water as do all the finches that come so I'll probably keep the feeders up all winter.
