New gesneriad lover-Hello!

Wytheville, VA

Have a brand new subscription to DG, and jumped right onto this forum. I live in SW virginia. At the moment, I am wild about streps! I have had hit & miss experiences with AV's. The streps seem to be more forgiving once I made the soil lighter. I am a relative beginner & wanted to say HELLO to all on this forum.
I would be interested in trading leaves if any are trimming their streps. Looking forward to reading & learning!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi kivit! Welcome aboard. You will find some very good strep growers on this forum. You are right about making your soil lighter. I am in the process of discussing that very same issue with someone as it relates to plant collapse from staying too wet.

Greetings, kivit! Glad to have you join us!

I am practically the opposite of you . . . I am much more on the AV side, although Gail and a few others are working hard to turn me around!

Wytheville, VA

Lol! I have killed enough African Violets! Actually, I may be tempted again because I just discovered that some AV 's have very big blooms!
what is the dG Marketplace you all talk about? I cant seem to locate it yet

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

From the Home page, there is a Marketplace link just under the Communities & Guides/Information tabs.

Wytheville, VA

got it! thx! Just found the address exchange too! was wondering how that worked!

Welcome kivit,Glad to have another gessie lover join us.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi kivit and welcome...

I'm usually a lurker more often than not these days, but I am a fellow Virginian and wanted to say "Hi there!". I am actually from SW VA originally... a little town called Newport, in Giles County.

Glad to see ya.... this forum is one of the best on DG... a GREAT bunch of gals (and guys!)

Hope to see more of you!

Syrumani...glad to know there is another av lover on here. I thought everyone had gone over to the 'other' side. Since starting my collection over again, I have put down umpteen av leaves and can't wait for them to all get going and produce plantlets. Don't get me wrong. I am nuts for all gessies...streps, sinningias, kohlerias, on and on.

AV's and I just seem to get along so much better than say, streps or sinningia's. I also get along well with episcia's, and so far kohlerias!

Since I am now all out of soil mix, I will have all this week to get my babies organized, sprayed, and photographed! Then, as soon as I can this weekend, off to purchase more soil mix!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Wait till MsCritterkeeper comes back. She will be so happy to see so more AV growers!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi Karen, your post must have gotten on while I was typing.. Happy to see you on here. Hoping all is well with you and your plants.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Why didn't you tell me you were out of soil? I could have brought you some.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I didn't realize how low I was until just this weekend, when I did the push to get the rest of the babies potted! It just seemed to always be there! Then, this morning, the bowl I was using started scraping the bottom!

Wytheville, VA

I use 10 year old horse poop with 1/3 -1/2 perlite for soil. Need a good systemic insecticide.
want some poop? :-)

Welcome Kivit!! I thought I recognized your name from somewhere..lol..yep I have been eyeing some of your Ebay things : ) I am also a strep lover(crazy about them in fact)..along with av's and a few other gessies..again..Welcome Aboard..there are alot of great knowledgeable gessie growers here..I am constantly learning new things from everyone and we have the nicest group of people here..love them all : )

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

(waving)~~~~~
I welcomed you via email - but thought I should join in and do so 'publicly', as well!

I don't get on this forum too much....but I have to tell you that many of the nicest DG'ers dwell here!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

While we have chatted via d-mail-- I want to welcome you publicly as well. People here on DG are the BEST!! they are friendly and generous. Folks here are always willing to accept your input no matter how long the thread or how new you are. I also belong to the "other" gardening website, but rarely visit there anymore. The main reason-- I have jumped in and posted on threads--and then been thoroughly ignored by the "old timers" despite the fact I have been a member of that group about 7 years. So welcome, we are so glad you are here!

kivit....if you want to see a plant perform at it's *maximum*...send some of it to Gail. lol!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

That puppy likes heat and humidity....you must have some of both?

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, kivit...thank you SO much!!

Here I am bringing plants in for the winter and lacking space.(first frost last Thursday - garage is 1/2 full of plants!)...then collecting more!! (I'm so baaadd!) (Ü)

I got a beautiful plant from bmedel (Brenda) the other day...no...make that 3 beautiful plants (one for my mom!) and now this!! Woohoo!!

I hope to take a photo of my beauties from Brenda soon....working two jobs and just haven't had time (I owe Gail a few photos, too!).

(Zone 1)

Wow, Nan ... Frost already? I would love some cooler weather but I'm not ready for frost just yet!

I have a feeling we might be in for a colder than usual winter, don't know why ... just a sense. We are having an early fall, my one Maple Tree is losing it's leaves already and usually it doesn't drop leaves until late November! I rarely have nice color with this maple ... only one year do I remember the beautiful colors before the leaves fell. I have to go find that picture to gaze at. I always love vacationing north of Florida during the fall when the gorgeous colors are showing, but with DH's teaching schedule we rarely get to take vacation in fall!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Gail - what is the plant that you said needed a haircut...is it Champagne Jam to which you referred from Nan I assume? I like the glossy leaves but especially the red blotch on the leaf reverse.

It going to be cold here tonight also....40*...brrr, but hopefully warm up towards the end of the week. I have to get serious and start taking in the plants that have been summering outdoors. I just brought in the big pepperomia. Nan, can you id it?

Fall is a beautiful time of the year and I love the autumn colors and fresh air, good cooking and the smell of wood burning in the fireplace. I would miss that living in Florida but the advantages especially come winter just might tip the scales in your direction, Lin. In fact I know it would. I'm going down to St. Augustine in a few weeks.

GoldLeaf, Wow ... you are coming to St. Augustine? That's only about 45 minutes north of me! It would be great if we could meet for lunch one day! St. Augustine is one of my favorite cities although I haven't been there in awhile. Many years ago my DH and I would take our bicycles on the back of the car and go up for the weekend and ride our bikes all over the city. Loved the beaches at Ponte Vedra to the north. St. Augustine beach is really great too. The old city is really nice if it isn't crowded, which at this time of year it shouldn't be. If you haven't been before I hope you have a great time.

That is a great looking Peperomia, look at all those tendrils! I have a peperomia that looks similar, may be the same one. Mine has been on the front porch for a couple of years and got sunburned a few weeks ago. I think mine was ID'd last year as P. obtusifolia: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/127999/

It's been raining but I went out and took a picture of mine. I'm hoping this will transmit, I keep getting messages that it's dropping the connection and can't open the page, whenever I try to preview.

Something is going on with the computer, it won't let me upload and send a picture. I will try later. I know Admin runs a lot of reports on Mondays which slows the system down a bit, at least I think I remember reading that somewhere a couple of months ago so maybe that's the problem tonight. I actually lost DG a few times this evening! Anyone else having any problems? AAARGH ... it's not even letting me send this post!

(Zone 1)

Well ... finally!

Ok, I'm going to try again to post a photo of the peperomia now.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, that's it, Lin....obtusifolia. I'll make a plant marker for it. Thanks!
I'll be in St. Augustine later this month. I do love visiting there, the old city, shopping on St. John's St., eating at the Columbia, and other favorites like Harry's. I always like to sit outdoors at Starbucks at the Santa Monica Hotel and have coffee. Lots to see and do in America's oldest city. We'll go to Ananstasia island, Jax beach and Atlantic beach too. Man, I wish I could meet up with you. I'll be with a couple of other people and we will only have one rental car. While there, I'll face south and give you a holler and a wave.

(Zone 1)

LOL GoldLeaf ... I will holler and ~ ~ ~ wave ~ ~ ~ right back atcha! I hope you have a wonderful vacation while in Florida!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Lin, I want to correct myself where I said St. John's St., I meant St. George St.
I've been to Ponte Vedra. In fact, one day it was so much fun going to yard sales in those fancy beautiful neighborhoods. Everyone's home was landscaped to perfection. All professionaly done I'm sure.

(Zone 1)

Yeah, I knew you meant St. George Street! LOL and I think the hotel is Casa Monica Hotel.

Ponte Vedra has become a very elite area, I bet it was fun going to yard sales there! Aaah, my dream to have a home like one of those with the landscaping to match ... and someone to do the upkeep! Housekeeper, Pool Guy, Yard Guy .... I can dream, can't I? I always say "If I win the Lottery". But, I never remember to buy a ticket! ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Right....the Casa Monica Hotel. I say that wrong all the time for some reason.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hello,
Goldleaf and Kivit, and also Nan... Welcome and sorry I am late for saying so.. You will learn my life is hectic and I am here some times and gone others...LOL I love streps, kohlerias, have a few Sinns. Have learned tons here from all the wonderful people... Your plants are just great and keep posting as I sometimes don't have time to post but love to stop in and look at all the picture.
Once again WELCOME .. Also my name is Susan and I am a addict to AV's.
Hugs,
Susan

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Susan, thanks, and do post more of your violets as the other gessies have them outnumbered here on the forum. I have lots of av leaves down but plan to acquire a few plants to tide me over till my own start growing.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I miss my avs but got disheartened with them when I somehow got a bug and lost all of them. Someday I may try again.
