Thanks Bob. That's what I was afraid of hearing.

Will Be Setting - up My EBs Soon AS Weather Allows?
Carol === No foolin! Corn grows beautifully in an EB. Fill with Bobs coco coir and a cup dolomite lime mixed in but you must use a stronger fertilizer because they are gluttons . I used Bloom Booster or Super Bloom which is 15-30-15 and planted sixteen stalks by setting eight kernels on each side with the fertilizer down the middle. Plant as stated prior three kernels per hole and water and stand back. Any brand of corn does well.
do thin to one stalk per hole
Thanks Tplant & gardenglory. Did you hand polinate? My problem is that I just have 2 (the holiday special) EBs, and have to choose what to experiment with. Maybe I can try some early crops and try something else later. Like Boca Bob, I dream of an acre!
Carol
I go with whatever it cost me most to buy at the store or something I love and cant get. Considering you buy corn for 12 for 1$, the EB is not really earning its living. If you have a ton of EB's then I would try it. That said. I would try the oriental style corn, thats something I cant get....well not fresh
12 ears for a dollar? Wow! Last year our corn here was $4.50/doz at stores and $6.00/dz at the farmers mkt. G-Glory, you oughta buy a truckload down there and bring it up to NC...you'd make a fortune!
But I agree w/ya, corn is such a long-maturing crop with a one time harvest I think I'd use my EB's for something that produces for a longer period of time.
Tplant, the picture of your corn harvest has me thinking of pulling some of my corn outta the freezer. That looks delish!
Shoe
Gosh, corn is only about that much here, right now. I think it was 4 ears for two bucks just tonight. No way. It isnt even good now, you just want to hope it is
Garden Glory: I'm moving to gainesville if veggies are that cheap. LOL I'll tell you, veggies are expensive up here in this part of Florida, in south Florida I used to do all my veggie shopping at Jamies Garden of Eden, used to walk away with 2 boxes of veggies for about $20, man do I miss those days, just like I miss buying steaks, homemade sausage, and chicken breasts at Doris Italian Meat Market and Penn Dutch, hardly ever shopped at Winn Dixie or Publix. LOL
TPlant: Hmmm, I got the butter ready. LOL Beautiful garden there Ted, I like the way you got it set up and the way it is flourishing.

I prefer a place called Wards.. just an old market with the greatest and freshest stuff. Im afaid its a bit of a drive from here tho, so unless its peanut or pea season, I usually just stick to the grocery store. Nothing there worth a hoot tho. Altho...I did get some delicious honeybells at publix last night. I was just about to take a trip to wards for some. They had them advertised as honeybell tangelo's, however...I dont actually think they are a tangelo, they are a cross between a grapefruit and a dandy tangerine. Anyway, they have more juice than three navels combinded and I love to hang over the sink and 'slurp' them
I don't think we will ever see corn 12 for a dollar ever again plus a lot more veggies that we used to buy? It was four for $2.80 at my Publix which always has excellent quality foods but money is a factor these days. You should get thirty-two ears per EB and picked fresh and eaten right after , well, the taste is far superior and that is even more so for fresh stringbeans. Honest! If you only have two or three EBs than it may not be worthwhile as you can use them for something more productive.
See...thats the real zone envy thing. When its 12 for 1.00...its the forth of july...there is corn everywhere. You are very lucky to be able to grow it during the seanson it is 4 for 2.80. I would like to try it for the fun of it, and because I love fresh corn AND because I believe that corn has been sprayed to death to keep the worms out..Im mean how else do you.
looking good Tplant. Momotaro is one of my favorites.
TPlant: Those tomatoes look really great, I hope mine look that good.

I've been picking more and more each day. This season besides some cherry types I decided to plant only the beefstek varities and let me tell you Magnum is a monster and delicious. This is the first time for me with that variety and I'm glad I planted it. Still kick myself in the rear end for forgetting my Sudduth Brandywine a very fine tomato. The most superior to my taste so far but Magnum has made me very happy. You guys should put it on your Spring planting along with Delicious. You'll not be disappointed with them!
Planted two OSU tomatos in Bocabobs gro bags. One white bag and one black bag. Still have two more to plant today. They are fun to work with...squirt in the water and they puff up like a ballon!
Also getting a bunch of Calla Lillies to plant in the grow bags. Going to have a lot of fun as long as my health holds out. I will be seeing some specialists soon to rid this ever tired feeling. Drat *%^$#
I am drooling since I wont even start my seed till mid march and no fresh tomotoes till july 1st man I live in the wrong place hahah canada is still under two feet of snow or more
Just got back from dropping my Shih-tzsu off at the groomers and then going to the suoermarket. Publix, where I see they are carrying heirloom tomatos such as Ugly and Cherokee Purple @ $3.49 LB? I should sell them mine as they were far better quality than theirs.
but then would you have enough to eat and to give to friends to show off on what a good gardener you are lol I love to give my extras to friends
Ted: My dad used to grow beefsteak tomatoes up north in Ohio, they were delicious, and I've been checking out the brandy wine myself, they are said to have a unique flavor. Same with the chocolate cherry tomatoes. I'll have a variety too this year. I only hope they turn out nearly as well as yours have, those are some great looking tomatoes. After discovering my PH level it's a good thing I use EBs to grow my tomatoes in, my soil is very acidic.
Today is stump removing day for me, got someone supposed to come out and use the chainsaw to cut the stumps a little shorter, my brother chopped down 8 trees for me last Spring and we treated the stumps with weed killer; but, it didn't quite do the job, need to have them cut a little shorter. Then we are going to drill holes and put in the Hi-Yield Stump Remover, let it sit for about 6 weeks and then pour kerosene on them and burn them down to the roots. When that mess has cleared up I can safely order my Royal Empress and Crape Myrtle trees. I'm also getting some 5 gallon buckets this evening (for making HEBs out of).
Tomorrow is shed organizing day and getting gardening supplies into the shed. This weekend I will feel like I actually got something accomplished and closer to being ready for Spring.

Had a doctors appointment today and by coincidence had a bronchitis attack in his office and it was a big one and was given the royal treatment. I'm glad it happened there so that they can see what I'm up against because everytime I went their my lungs were clear but not this time. I got the vapor treatment to clear my lungs plus vitamins plus prescriptions and must go back Thursday for another inhaler treatment. Meanwhile must eat more protein and rest which in my case is easy as I tire so easily. Hope to be able to go back out in my garden next week or so as my tomatos are really huge and ripening. Got to get my son out there tonight to pick them for me as he is not home at this time. Maybe on my back but I can still answer queations if needed.
Starting to cough again so must take my cough medicene and relax. Normally I wouldn't mind being laid up for awhile but this is the height of my season and I really do have some beauties out there. Maybe when my son picks them I can take pictures. Jeez! And this is the best season I ever had?
Paw,
Settle down and get your digital camera ready. Pick a nice staging spot and line those babies up for their photo op! Post them all into the plant files along with nice captions about your ideal growing conditions this season.
That ought to keep you busy for awhile!!!
Get rest, and get BETTER!
No Rest, No Health -- Know Rest, Know Health!
Real cute saying Gymgirl. Thank You!
welcome.
Tplant, I almost hate to say it, but I'm glad you had a bronchitis attack in the doctor's office--it sounds like you received some good methods of treatment. Take care of yourself--the 'maters know you love them.
Oh me to Cape Cod. This way they actually saw the h--l that I have been living. Feeling much better today but have strict orders to rest and must go back tomorrow for one of those inhaler treatments which really helped me to breathe again. Have a bunch of meds to take also. Slept beautifully last night! Thank you all again for caring about me!!!! In all my life I've never had such good friends as I have at DG and we've never even met face to face except for a couple of us. How lucky can a guy get to have friends that actually care for him?
Ted: This friend will come right down there and kick your butt if you don't take it easy ya hear? LOL I don't want to lose you dear friend ok?
joy112854
Take it easy Ted....we all want you to feel better. That IS the great thing about DG, I've only been participating in the veggie forums a couple of weeks and already feel like family here ☺
My family did the picking for me today but there were many more as they gave some to my neighbor and a Deputy friend.. Also picked some Star Fruit from my tree. If you've never tasted ripe star fruit you've missed a real treat and they are very high in fiber and Vitamin C. Star fruit is the yellow fruit in the background.
How do you people live with yourselves down there growing tomatoes like these in the middle of January? That just makes me sick!
Just kidding of course....LOL
Beautiful maters....
Is the Star Fruit sweet or what?
Jerry
Very Sweet! They sell for $2.50 ea in the stores but are not tree ripened.
TPlant: I have had star fruit, they are good and your tomatoes look spectacular, as always. LOL You grow star fruit on a tree hey? Do they grow in zone 8 B in Pensacola, Florida area? Is there a bush variety?
joy112854
Don't think so?
No and no
Your going to have to trade for blueberries. lol
Off to the doctor today after 12pm and feeling much better. Will recieve another treatment today with that inhaler thing-a-ma-jing. Think they call it a nebulizer. Hoping to get the all clear for the week-end to work in my garden? My family was a big help picking my tomatos yesterday as I have been having a bumper crop. Can't wait to use the coco coir in my EBs for the melons and peppers in March! Really impressed to see how my roses love it. I'm going to post on the rose thread today if the doctor says its OK to go out but he was pretty strict on getting rest and I will follow his orders. The weather is very cool and probably not good for me? Hey! Maybe I can get my son to take the pictures for me?
Tplant you can get those breathing treatment machines for the home. Most insurances as well as the medicaid program cover them. Several family members of mine have them and they make a huge difference.
Hope all goes well at the doctors and you tell him we said he has to get you well!
Yes araness I am aware of that but hope I'll not have to at this time but I will if he says so as my insurance will cover it...
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing,
Tplant you can get those breathing treatment machines for the home. Most insurances as well as the Medicaid program cover them.
Tplant would it help if you wore some kind of mask when you go outdoors to filter out all the allergens?
Just for grins, are you allergic to tomatoes? LOL
Happy Gardening and Good Luck with the Doc today.
Jerry
Lord forbid being allergic to tomatos. That would be the very end....
