Paul Newman

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

I was saddened to see this morning when reading the news, Paul Newman has passed away. I teared up upon reading the news, as silly as that seems since I never knew the man other than through his work. One of the reasons being he was my late mother's heat trob. She always told my father that if Paul Newman ever came knockin, she was out the door. *LOL* Of course my father always said IF he shows up she should go right ahead. She adored him and along with Elvis were the only two figures I ever heard her speak about. The early morning hours on the day she passed away, as we sat by her bed so she wouldn't be alone what should be playing on TBS? An old Elvis movie followed by one by Paul Newman, and although she never knew at that point it made my sister and I smile for just a brief bit that day.

How sad. Many of the "stars" I grew up w/are passing.Makes me think of my own mortality.

Victoria Harbour, ON

He sure was a hunk...passed away last night and just now I'm already watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid...he will be missed..a true humanitarian...

I was so sorry to see that on the news. He was one of the actors with talent and class..and good looks. It was always nice to see photos of he and his wife both in the news and on bottles of the salad dressings.
A movie sounds like a good idea.

What was his last movie? I'm thinking "Nobody's Fool" but that was almost 20 years ago. Isn't there another where he plays a thief and is in a nursing home rather than jail, catatonic from a stroke but he's merely planning his escape. A nurse or CNA figures it out and becomes his partner.

Newman could play a heel or a hero with equal believability.

Once, while on station in Alaska, the co asked who would replace the western actors who were departed? The next night, on the satellite the movie "Silverodo" premiered, His question was answered.

There will never be another Newman, another Elvis, etc. But then again once we are gone who will miss them?

His passing is a sadness, we can be thankful for the respite his work brought us while he was here.

When John Wayne passed away, I was stationed on a small Japanese island in the south pacific. News was slow to get there usually coming by teletype over the radio circuit. But that news was passed by voice, it got there much quicker.

What a great career and life he had. He has always been someone I admired. I am still amazed at how long he was considered a hunk.

GK1153, I think that movie was Where the Money Is. I checked out info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Newman

Larry King is having an hour on Paul Newman tonight at 9:00 EST. I think Larry is going to be showing his different interviews over the years.

Santa Fe, NM

Although he was more my mother's generation than mine I have always adored Paul Newman. So handsome, intelligent and classy. I think film lovers will remember him forever. He was one of a kind.

I just read an article about him and not only was he talented but he was very generous as well. The company he and his friend started, the salad dressings, popcorn, spagetti sauce, and etc. all the profits are donated to charity. They have donated around $250 million.

I guess I'm going to have to watch "Cool Hand Luke"

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

I will miss him too. He never got caught up in the Hollywood, "I'm so wonderful, look at me" BS. I feel sad for his wife. They were quite a team.

I am going to get "The Sting"..loved that movie. One (or more) of his salad dressing bottles has he and his wife standing with gardening tools, like the famous painting of the stern looking couple (name escapes me). I think they started the product line/charity after their son was killed.
He will be missed. The last time I saw him was on the Jay Leno show..when the both drove mini race cars..Paul won.:)

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

I just read a small portion about Paul Newman on Wikipedia.org, it says that him and his wife Joanne were married in 1958 until his death, they celebrated or were just about to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Paul Newman raced at the 24 Hours of Daytona as co-driver and they won. Paul was young back then, 70.

A life well lived, for sure...
I enjoyed most of his films, but was especially fond of "The Verdict".
Tonight, Joanne Woodward is going to bed without her companion of over 50 years. We should all keep her in our thoughts with continued devotion...
Quite a pair those two...
