I almost hate to post any of these after seeing IRIS's macros.

Iris: You have some really great macro shots!
Keonikale: That first frog is fabulous. I love it! Question: What is that green lizard with the red markings? I've never seen one of those here before.
Trent: I covet that last orchid. :)
Deb

Not my best shot, but it's the best I have so far of this ginger.

Thanks Deb. I caught that frog on the right leaf at the right time. The photo with the 'lizard' is actually a Gecko in Hawaii. Instead of our typical lizard, they have those everywhere.

Breaking my rule of this thread for a second. But count the Gecko's on this BOP - LOL - there are 9.

IRIS, you mind if I ask what you're shooting with? These are very nice.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Not at all, And thanks! I use a Nikon D80 with an old Nikkor 300mm lens, I also used extention tubes with the Toad Lily

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Nice, we use the same camera. Do you find yourself having to use a Tripod for most of your best macro shots with the D80? I think I need a higher quality lens. If I use the tripod, most everything's great for macro, but if I don't - not so much. I have the 18-200mm Nikkor, it's not bad, but I just haven't been able to invest in a better lens yet. Some of those things cost more than the camera, LOL. I just don't remember having to use a tripod on with the D50 so often - but again, it may be just the lens.

In any event, love your photos. You have a real eye for macro shots.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Yes, I pretty much use the tripod all the time for macro/close up. I have the Yes, I use the tripod pretty much all the time, Especially with macro's! I have the 18-200mm Nikkor too, I like using it, But, I use the F4 most of the time. Your so right on the cost of the lenses! I got the 300mm used from a camera shop in my area ( I believe a new one would cost a good $1200.00) But, Though the one I bought is older, I Love using it! In all honesty, Knowing what I know now, If I could go back and change anything, I would have gotten the D40 or D200 rather then the D80, But, All in all, I'm not really dissapointed with my D80.
Do you ever use Extention Tubes with your lenses?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Yeah some of these newer models always make me wish I'd waited, but then another new model comes out, LOL. Regardless I need to get a nice lens with a good f-stop. A l lot of them are fixed lens with no zoom capability, and cost a small fortune, but for as many landscape shots as I take - it'd be worth it.

I'd honestly never heard of extension tubes, how do they work?

Selma, NC(Zone 7b)

This is not very macro but I like it. Right now I'm stuck with a reg digital camera but I'm slowly wearing on DH to get a new one and let me have his D70 and a couple of lenses.

Sorry for the late reponse here, Was ouside most of the afternoon/evening.
The D40 is not really a newer model, It's just that it can take the same quality picture and is pretty much eaqual to the D80 but can be bought at a cheaper price and of course the D200 and the newer D90 are more advanced which is to be expected. When I had gotten mine, I had a choice between the D80 and D200, I didn't know then what I know now or I would have gone with the D200, But, It doesn't really matter to me know as I'm content for now with the D80. It's not really the camera body that matters.. It's what lens you get that matters most anyway.
Do you use auto alot? I never use auto on mine, Always manual, I often feel a need to tweek shots and I can't do that in automatic, Plus manual kinda forces me to learn to use the controls.
As for the Extenstion Tubes, I think you'd love them if you got them, Especially seeing that you like to do a lot of macro photography! I think of them as a cheaper way of getting macro opposed to buying a true macro lens ( Which is extremley expensive) Heres how one company wrote what they are :

"Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality.

The DG extension tubes have no optics. They are mounted in between the camera body and lens to create more distance between the lens and film plane. By moving the lens father away from the film or CCD sensor in the camera, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The greater the length of the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus. "

I use mine often and I really enjoy them ... Heres a photo taken today with a 300mm lens, A No. 36 Extention Tube at about 10 ft.away....

Iris: I love that first d-fly especially. Great color!

Thanks Deb!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Iris that last hummigbird pic was as good as it gets. Those are very hard to get in focus yet get the shutter speed fast enough. Good job.

I'll try harder now. LOL.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

That is an amazing shot. Thanks for explaining the tubes too. I also try and shoot all my landscapes in Manual. But out in the yard I tend to revert back to point and shoot mode and use Auto a lot.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Thanks CoreHHI! Try harder? You seem to do quite well as is! :)

keonikale, Thanks! ..And "Your Quite Welcome!" Some people like manual, Some auto, I just happen to prefere manual. I have a site that I use for some of my photos if you care to see any, Some are from when I first started using the D80 and some as I advanced a little.. If you go to the site you will see that there are different galleries for my name (all galleries) .. just press on which ones you'd like to see and if your interested, You'll find other photos ( A-lot) on pbase and many are really great photos!! ....

Keonikale -- is that a wild lizard, or a pet?

He looks like a reptilian version of an Indigo Bunting.
