I know, but I'm not quite ready yet.
Rock Wall Construction Part 2
Victor, Great idea. I love the spot where Lewis and Clark found the headwaters of the Missouri river, Three Forks in Montana. You could end up in a lot of special places. My son took a picture of his feet when he was16 and traveling in Ecuador straddling a line that marked the equator. Kind of a cool picture.
Yep, Mom blew it with Dad and her Mother too, but she has her good points. I think she likes the orderliness of lining up the dead with the headstones. A couple of years ago she and I went into some early cemetaries in Scotland looking for old kin. It was fun and meaningful if one is into genealogy. Plus the stonework around this old cemeteries is amazing, but not any more so than Wha's, but time has given them great lichen and moss. Patti
Okay, I don't know why that pic didn't post.
Anyhow, thought it was cute. Good night!

hey what happened to wall talk?!
top of katadin for my ashes - wife says there is no way she can get up there - told her to rent a copter and plan to pay a fine. now i think sprinkling a little here and there would be nice.
i was looking back on pictures i have from the beginning of this project last night. those huge burning bushes really were a nice screen from the street. all ripped out now. hope these itea's grow fast!!
Bill this project has been a pleasure to watch. Thank-you for posting all the pics and congratulations on the results. A job very well done.
thanks ngram - my wife gave a complement last night as well - then asked if i was going to do anything about the two different colored stone -meaning the blue stone. always something - although it is on the plan to remove next year. at least she has not noticed the four 8 ft. burning bushes gone that she really liked.
Well I ripped out a big burning bush here too. Not an easy task for a small lady but am glad it is gone and will not invade the area. I replaced it with a 'Coppertina' ninebark. That would be Victor's fault, but I really like it so far. Hope your Itea grow well for you and your wife will like them too.
i also blame vistor for my coppetina - lol!
I ripped out all my Coppertinas. Just kidding! Hee hee. The itea is not a real fast grower, Bill.
i know and they are pretty small - have a third one coming that will probably arrive today. I'm also moving two large weigelea's out there so it will be fuller than right now. one is in although trimmed to the ground. the other will be next spring.
You know what I think would be great? If the law allowed us to have a funeral pyre of our loved ones at home. Would save people a lot of money. I think it's a good way to remember your loved one, and then the ashes can be saved to spread where that person (the deceased) wished. Of course, you would have to have someone from a funeral home on site to regulate everything, making sure that the body is prepared properly, the burn site prepared just right, etc. So they would still make their money, just perhaps charge less than for a usual cremation in a crematorium (or whatever they're called). I don't know, just a thought.
I just had my sister cut down 2 very large burning bushes out back that were getting too big for that area. I wanted to make room for something better and more ornamental. And not invasive.
I do have a larch over there, and someday it will be very big. I may move it before it gets too big. I think it might be about 4' now. I may move it closer to the woods border. It's not far from there right now.
My sister and I have been slowly clearing out the seedling and sapling trees there, and some of the bigger ones, as well. I want to keep the oaks and some of the maples. Want to get rid of the choke cherries and other "junk" trees and put in other things. I would like to put a Bradford pear in there. I have a seedling in a pot that I could put in there.
I need to get my 'Wine and Roses' Weigelia planted. Maybe I'll work on that this weekend. I really have to much to plant, but I don't think it will all get done before winter is here for the duration. I'll just do what I can.
Best of luck on all your plans, Bill. You've done a great job so far. I'm sure any future projects you do turn out great.
Karen
Karen - interesting that you follow up the paragraph about cremation with one on the burning bush. Hmmm.
Yes, that is interesting, isn't it. And that burning bush did get burned, too.

I heard that BB was being added to the Ma list of plants no longer allowed. I have 3 that have done nothing bad in 23 years except get bigger. They never have self seeded in my yard. We were just out today admiring their great winged bark and bright red berries. Now it has been listed as an Invasive Illegal Alien, though I hate to banish it if it is OK in Nantucket. I will have to check with the guy at the nursery who is on a committee that is monitoring and eradicating invasive plants on the island. Bamboo is big on their list. Patti
I thought that Nantucket was part of MA & the invasive list is statewide. However you don't have to rip anything out, just don't plant new. DH is always after the buckthorn & oriental bittersweet. There is american bittersweet if you can find it. Our wall is old fashioned New England along the road. the only time anything needed to be done was when a car hopped over it & knocked down a bit. Silly kid driving too fast!
IrisMa, Nantucket is in a world of its own. We disdainfully refer to the rest of the country as "the mainland", but flee there when in need of bulk toilet paper, underwear, and potting soil and fertilizer. Oh, and a great pizza in New Haven. Do I detect a theme here? Nantucket has banned chain stores since one moved here, Ralph L. and is trying to ban cell phone use in cars, but I have seen nothing about banning the invasive Burning Bush. I am going to talk to the local committee as I am all about not intentionally screwing up the environment anymore than I do everyday by indulging in way too much of everything. Patti
There was a list of 140 now banned plants & I can't remember where to find it (included forget-me-nots). Will have to ask DH when he returns from an errand.
Patti - BB are invasive they are popping up all over my yard around other BB. Even though i've probably dug and burnt 10 of them this fall - i still have plenty.
Yes, BB is very invasive. I get seedlings all the time, too. Time to get rid of any I have. I already got rid of 2. If yours haven't made any seedlings, then maybe you don't have to worry. What makes them so invasive is that they pop up all over the place and crowd out natives. Same can be said of barberry, bittersweet, Norway maple, and the list goes on and on. I'm constantly getting rid of bittersweet and barberry, as well as the BB. Don't have the Norway maple to worry about here. I do have something I think is called European buckthorn. It has gray, speckled bark, black berries and orange roots. I had an arborist once tell me it was poison dogwood. I doubt that. If it is, I'm not allergic. I never heard of poison dogwood.
Karen
DH has been fighting buckthorn in our pasture & woods for years, it isn't even pretty.
No, Iris, you're right, it's not pretty.
Karen
Patti - Like yours, my BBs have never thrown off a single seedling in the 18 years they've been planted at our farm in NH. I can't figure out why, and our experience with them really caused us to be surprised at their being labeled an invasive. We also had a couple in our Conn. yard, and they also did not propagate. I'd like to remove ours at the farm, but only because they are taking up valuable real estate where I'd rather plant something that provides colorful blooms.
Clap! Clap! Clap! Cheer! Whistle! Foot stomp! Wow this is incredible! I've been lurking from the start of this wall. Just saw the new thread. It is a work of art. BRAVO!
Bill, not that I'd recommend doing this, too much work for that long wall, but at our old house we had a short stacked stone wall along the drive and for Christmas used to weave lights all around the stones, it looked AWESOME.
Wow, I bet that would look awesome.
Karen
Hi Jen - i'm sure it would look good - not really into lighting up the outside yard - we only do an alberta spruce and a fake dear by the front door. besides i'd have to run 150 ft. of extension cord just to get to the wall.
