Hallelujah - i finally finished the wall - at least for this year. here is a shot of the corner leading up to the front steps. was able to mix the two wall together pretty good.
Rock Wall Construction Part 2
WOOHOO!!! Happy dancing going on here for you. The blending of the two looks great. Now, can you relax for awhile before the next project? Wonderful job, Bill
Jan
I would be hard pressed to find labor that could or would even want to help me carry out a similar project here. That is an impressive well done project. Kudos!
Great job, Bill! Congratulations!
looking doowwnnnnnn the wall. about 120' feet of wall - a lot of stone - did finally run out of large rocks for the bottom - right at the end - perfect timing. had this week off and spent most of it finishing this up - a race against winter - neighbors must have thought i was nuts - rain, cold and i'm out there early in the morning (even t-day) working on the wall.
very happy with how it came out - you can walk right down the top of the wall and it is solid - neighbors must really think i'm nuts if they saw me walking back and forth on the top of the wall checking it out:)
thanks to everyone who watched the progress and commented - i appreciated it.
there is a lot of rock left over - as well as the blue stone i saved with and the gravel from the middle- so there are still rock walls to be built and i'm already scouting thinks out.
if i knew how to edit it would be, scouting "things: out.
Jan - doc - victor - thanks.
What a project.
You should be justly proud of it.
Congratulations! What a beautiful labor of love Bill.
Want to come do mine now?? lol
sorry i'm afraid of rabbits
Thats to bad!
Yay!!!! What a great job! Big pat on the back for you.
Bill, I was lurking this whole time...WOWZERS is all I can say!
Great job! I have some big plans for next summer for 2 new stoned wall areas, I think you definitely inspired me!
Fantastic job, Bill, and glad to see the project already completed. And just before winter, too. I know my poor back would never survive a project like that, though I wouldn't have a problem doing a shorter wall with smaller rocks. Those big hefty ones I would not be able to manage, though. I love what you've done, and I'm envious.
Btw, to edit, just look at your post. Under the date you will see in blue the post# and edit. Edit will only show for your posts, not for anyone else's. Just click on that and you're good to go.

Wha, What a joy to see a project from start to finish and feel no pain! I love the care you have taken with integrating the new planting into the "Great Wall" and the rest of the landscape. Thanks again for the tour. I will look forward to the seeing it in the snow and in the spring and again next summer. Please keep posting. Patti
You should be so proud of yourself! You have done a fantastic job this spring, summer, and fall, and kept us all in awe of your talent and energy!
My hat's off to you!
thanks again - i bit off more than i anticipated with all the projects i started and finished this year. the great wall being the biggest and most time consuming - took longer than anticipated and required some breaks for sanity's sake. next year i plan to be more sane and get in some kayaking with my better half.
Wow, Bill......I was wondering how far you had gotten, and now it's great fun to see for myself! You have done a magnificent job - not only with your wall, but with the landscaping as well. What a beautiful job!! Thank you for taking the time to update the photos and share them with us. Wow!
Which part of the wall do you want to be buried under, Bill?!
Victor, The part that he isn't using for you! Patti
I'll be happy to be under a wall he builds for me here! (Actually I plan to be cremated, so some of the ashes can be spread on the stones.)
I already have a big burn pile ready to ignite. I am all for the scattering of ashes. I have a list of places that I would like to call home after I die. Some are logical like in my garden and in Vt at our house along the Baker Brook and in Canada off the dock at our family cottage, and then there are the strange spots that I think I need to visit just one more time like a bridge over the Seine, a lava flow in the Galapagos, a place in the Aleutians that my Dad always talked about but that I never visited and maybe in a garden that I covet, but that shall go unnamed as I am not sure they would want me dropping in as fertilizer. But the list changes all the time and I have no plans to depart soon. Patti
A plumber friend wants to be flushed form the top of the Empre State Bldg!
LOL! That's a good one, Victor. I always wanted my ashes spread over Lake Tahoe. That is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The Grand Canyon is nice, too. We spread my mother's ashes in her daylily seedling bed. My Dad wants his ashes there, too.
Karen
Thats funny Victor!!
Part of my brother's ashes are sprinkled in a few places.... off the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the surrounding area. Parts are here in Maine at 2 of the lakes and Blueberry Mountain. Good thing he was 6'3" hee hee he
For me... my land out back and off the top of Cadilac Mountain, Acadia National Park. I always envisioned flying off that Mountain and some day im gonna!
Both plans sound good, Karen and Celeste! I have a number myself.
Victor, great descent story, but the final spot seems less desirable. Are there alligators in the NYC sewers?
I love Karen's story. A true family in harmony.
My dear Dad wanted to be cremated, but when my DM told me she had picked out the casket, I knew she was not going to follow his wishes. She said funerals were for the living, and she was in charge. I haven't visited his unwanted grave since. But I am going to have to bury my mom there at some point, which seems really unfair, but, unlike her, I will follow her wishes. Her mother was from Vancouver and really wanted to be scattered in Stanley park, but alas she was buried in a ugly dark mausoleum in a Detroit Mi. cemetery. How bad is that when she so wanted to be scattered outside? It is beyond me. My DM has a spot for me in the wall in Detroit too, as well as one next to my Dad in Tulsa. But please note that I want to reserve a spot at Wha's which is near the ancestral home of Groton Ma before going either to the Motor City or to Oklahoma. Please be my witness. Bet Wha didn't know he has created a cemetary. Patti
Too bad about your dad, Patti. One of my ideas is to have some spread on either side of the Continental Divide (maybe from Yellowstone) so some ends up in the Pacific and some in the Atlantic.
Patti, that's too bad about your father being buried when he wanted to be cremated. That's horrible that your DM would not honor his wishes. I just don't understand that. Personally I don't believe in having bodies take up space in cemeteries. What a waste! The soul is no longer with the body, so what does it matter?
I would like to be cremated, but actually, once I'm gone I'm no longer gonna care what happens to my body. It is true that funerals are for the living. You can have a memorial service for someone who is cremated, so what's the difference? Do we really need to see a casket being lowered into the ground? We are still honoring them with a memorial service.
Karen
Poor Bill. Must be wondering the h*** happened to his celebratory thread!
Ha ha ha! Sorry Bill. Technically, wouldn't the body make good compost for the soil??
Depends on the person!
Your so bad! lol
and so good at it!
Glad you didn't say 'rotten'!!
But rotten makes for good compost.
