These are all so beautiful! I envy you. I would love to find a special one here to buy. I have the perfect weather for them. I had one once that had a trunk that was foot across it was so old.

Are you crossing them? Too cool!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Those are truly beautiful!

Cumberland, MD(Zone 6a)

Oh, I am drooling over them all. I like Amethyst best though, gorgeous color. You are so lucky to have all of those. Planning a trip to the US? (hint, hint)

Gordon
Sorry for not being descriptive enough
'Rosa Lila' is a Vulcanicola the others are Flavas.
Kell
I have crossed them every which way LOL
Linda
A trip to USA will be very nice, Thanks for the offer :-)
When I can get any cuttings to root ??? a trip across the pond will be possible!
Skylon
I have seed pods (hope they hang on over winter) there is a huge list for them but ask again in early 2009 and maybe.

I love that Amethyst...its so not fair that we don't have all those here or at least that I don't have them lol. You make fabulous photos btw.
I have some seeds somewhere with Mobisu crossed in them , I guess I should plant them before they get too old.

OMG, Alan, those brugs blossoms look like a color wheel- truly spectacular!
Congrats on your success in raising them and also in hybridizing them!

Do you find these get get virused after a couple of years? All my sangs and my vulcanicola did. It may have been because I brought in so many regular brugs and they carried viruses. A friend in Canada finds hers get virused too after a couple of years. I notice the ones at the Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco all have a bad virus.

Before I had so many brugs, my sang was happy for years.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Wow, amazing! They are so pretty they look like candy. I so wish I could grow a sanguinea here!

Cumberland, MD(Zone 6a)

You be sure & come & visit me (or stay) if you make it over here. DH wants to know if you are near RAF Upper Hayford? He was there while in the Air Force in 1977 & remembers it fondly.

This is one of the things that I love about DG! You can make friends anywhere in the world!

Cumberland, MD(Zone 6a)

Yes, & we're all desperate to find someone who will talk brugs for more than 30 seconds without yawning in our faces. LOL

I have a red sanguinea and it didn't flower for me this summer. Last summer I had a few blooms on it. All my other brugs are blooming like crazy. I do feed a lot with 20-20-20. What am I doing wrong with this one?

Skylon, what a beautiful place to take a rest - love your blooms!

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 6b)

Alan, They are just beautiful. I LOVE Amythyst and Wildfire. I just pollenated some things with THE pollen!

Burnley, United Kingdom

Hi Paul
Hope The Pollen works its magic
(Hope everything is OK)
Kell
The Vulcans and Flavas (the ones I know of anyway) carry a virus. The Sangs and Arborea seem clear.
It seems to have no effect on the blooms or plant growth.
I have real problems rooting Flavas and Vulcans, maybe the virus and the some of the leaves are mottled and drop after only a few weeks.
Hope fully it won't be carried in the seeds.
I don't like it but I live with it to have these blooms !
Linda
Kind offer, :-)
Sorry I don't know where Upper Hayford is, I live in the North West of England,50 miles from Manchester.

Yea its great to have International Brug. friends.

Alan..does your virus look like this.. this is a flava cross but one with the fuzzy leaf form more like the flava/sangs...leaf... I have another of the same cross... don't know if it the same pod or not...it is not fuzzy leafed at all... and it doesn't have the leaf discoloration.. glad to hear it doesn't effect the growth ..or the flowering... SO.... nothing you can do for it then ..
lovely photo also.. do you have any picture osthe flowersonthe plant you can post

Linda, my virused plants just would look so bad I would toss them. Sounds like your virus is not as bad. I just love all your colors.

Gordon, did your discoloration just show up recently? As I recall all my leaves would have the mottling.

Thumbnail by Kell
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Yes...Kell.. it was a good strong healthy plant.. no discoloration.. till a month or so ago.. I have it real near others which I guess is my way of seeing if it will spread.. or is perhaps just something that happenedit it.. OH... kind of like testing for TB by keeping someone in an elevator with others..barbaric medicine.com.... Gordon
edited to say..
OH..mine is prettier I think Kell...

Hurstwood,

I hear the Rosa Lila are hard to come by, what about that Amethyst? I have a friend in Oxford right now and she is due to visit in the states in Jan/Feb. May be I can send her up your way to get some seeds/cuttings...

Lovely flowers and I what a wonderful display of range of colors!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes it is, Gordon! LOL.
Interesting how they get those bubbled leaves.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

WELL....my leaves have a prettier coloration... but yours... has the bright yellow flowers..... I'm afraid I must give yours the a ward for pretty then... I didn't notice the flowers...so caught up with the viral aspect
Yes the bubbled leaves... looks just like the ones I have with broad mite damage...
been spraying them for that lately... I've got a few avid sprays in... hope it knocks them out...
I 'm amazed.. your sang had a foot diameter trunk and then died

Burnley, United Kingdom

My leaves don't have the bubbled apperence, just the mottling.
I believe there is one other Rosa Lila and one other Amethyst in the UK,none for sale.
I think this is due to the fact that they are next to impossible to root. There is not even any available in Germany, they are advertised but not available!
Rosa Lila is a very receptive pollen parent but I can't get any pollen off her?
I have 5 seed pods on her crossed with:- Amethyst,Sanguinea (x2),Lilac and Wildfire.
Just hope they hold on and the seed is viable.
Thank You all again for the nice comments
Alan

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So Alan, those 2 will not self pollinate? Maybe it would find its own pollen. LOL. I know my arborea selfs almost every bloom though my big sang rarely had pods on it. If you could get seeds, you could make a mint. I would sure pay a premium for them. Good luck on your hybridization program. Very cool indeed.

Oh Gordon, it did not really die from natural causes. When it got virused I cut it down. Though truthfully I was going to cut it down then anyway because it was so huge and took up too much of my yard as well as my neighbor's yard for it draped itself over the fence I realized when I did cut it down. Sangs tolerate the winter cold much better than regular brugs so it rarely had winter dieback. It would just keep growing and growing. My weather is perfect for sangs, etc. My arborea can flower all winter. It now towers over my house having grown up thru many other plants to reach the sun. I am about to cut that one down too if I ever get around to growing out some of its seeds. That is one I never want to be without because of its scent.

Anyway, I lied, the trunk was over 2 feet across. I just searched it on here, I knew I had a pic. From 2002. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/303735/#post_36945

Pretty ugly, huh? LOL

Kell, how well do arborea cuttings root? My DH killed the plants I had growing rom seeds you sent me several years ago.

If I could grow sanguineas here and get it to grow that big, I'd say that was a gorgeous trunk. LOL. I can only drool long distance.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I know I have rooted them easily in the distant past but I tried last year in early fall to root a bunch of 6 to 7 foot cuttings fromthis huge one I have and none took. It may have been from the size or maybe arboreas only like to be rooted in spring like some of the trickier brugs.

I have so many brugs to root soon. I am late doing it already. Most of my brugs are in huge 30 gallon pots and they were sluggish all summer because I never trimmed their roots and gave them new soil in spring. I am thinking I will restart them all as big standards and toss the old pots, dirt and all. But I am so lazy I am puttng it off.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

It's a good thing you don't have to cart them indoors. I have had to buy a commercial dolly to carry several citrus trees planted in 30 gallon pots into the greenhouse. My Brugs aren't large enough yet to warrant pots that large. I literally had to start anew late last year so most of mine are still in 5 gallon containers or smaller. At some point most will have to go in the ground. I hope by then we will have decided whether to go ahead and build our dreamhouse or not.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Bettydee, me too LOL (about the dream house) I am just now bringing things in.. i have a ton of things that don't like to be chilled let along froze.. sheese!

Only Arborea group are self-fertile.
The pods on your Sangs. must have be pollinated by the birds and bees !!
Some of the Hybrid Arborea's are not self-fertile and need a little human intervention.
Its lots of fun pollinating though,so hit those Sangs. with the Arborea pollen.
Open the young Arborea buds, remove the anthers and pollen, then hit these with the Sang. pollen.
Great possibilities, good luck
Alan

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Alan, what kind of human intervention? Chemical? This is strickly nosiness on my part as I can only dream of growing them here in the devil's playground. This summer has been one of the hottest in recorded history, noted for the number days over 95ºF.

Burnley, United Kingdom

Betty
You don't get to know if you don't ask :-)
Human intervention, I simply meant you have to cross-pollinate these plants yourself instead of leaving it to the birds and bees.
On another forum a small group of us are working towards making this group'heat tolerant' (as well as lots of other dreams) so maybe it will be possible to grow them in Texas someday soon.
I wish I had just a little bit of your sunshine here in the UK !
Alan

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Alan, if I could package it, I would send a good portion of it to you. We are in a drought and would love to see all this sunshine disappear and be replaced with rain ladened thunderclouds. LOL

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Alan,
I just ordered a sanguinea, I'm so excited! I hear they are more difficult than the other Brugs. Any words of advice for me?
Thanks!
Roberta

Burnley, United Kingdom

Hi Roberta
Sanguinea's are easy to grow (well in my climate).
I don't do anything any diffrent with these from my 'normal Brugs'
Good open compost, lots of water and feed, mine grow in full sun (English sun) but I guess you will need to grow yours in the shade.
If the temps. are constantly over high 70's they won't flower, much above this and the plant will start to look misrable!
I don't over winter mine, I just start new seed in December.(I have some Sangs. I need to keep alive this winter because I have seedpods on them from Flava crosses)
Anything more specific you want to know, just ask.
Good Luck and enjoy these stunning plants.
Alan

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Thank you Alan. Our summers here average in the 90s, and winters in the 50s. From what you tell me I think I'd better plant my Sang in light shade....wish me luck! : )
ps: I've lived in the UK (London) for a year in 99, and I LOVE YOUR COUNTRY! : )

Burnley, United Kingdom

With those winter temps. I think I'll cross the pond and move over there :-)
