September Blooms, Part 3

Brenda, I LOVE that Strep cyanandrus!!! I've been putting off and putting off ordering seeds for that one and I'm going to place that order this week! I have to grow that one! It's just adorable!

Cinnamon is a natural anti-fungal, to my understanding. Ki told me about it regarding Orchids and I'm sure it works for any plant. I don't think it would have any effect on pests, though.

Lin, that Orchid is gorgeous! Look at this one! It tells a little about it, too! http://www.sborchid.com/plantdisplay.php?ocode=CCA1767

I can't find where she was talking about them, but did y'all see where Gail posted the pictures of the Nematanthus and Aeschynanthus, Tropicanna and Coral Flame, the real pretty ones. Well, she has them on DG Marketplace!! I bought some of each of them, and wanted to let everyone know. I'm so excited! Can't wait to get them! They're gorgeous! ^_^

(Zone 1)

Wow, Amy ... that is amazing! I bought this plant in a teeny little pot in a plastic bag at Wal-Mart for @ $5.98 ... they are asking $25 for that big one! I was at Wal-Mart today and they have no orchids or supplies left, have cleared out everything for Christmas stuff! It sure looks odd walking into the inside of the garden center and seeing Christmas decorations! It's not even October until tomorrow! Arrrgh!

I am going to Home Depot tomorrow to pick up bark and perlite and I am going to look at the packaged Better Gro Orchids there!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, Lin...............I went to that site Rain just mentioned and the one I wanted started at 100.00 (laughing out loud)

Talk about coincidence, I came across (online) this cinnamon-oil based pesticide today.
http://hyg.aces.uiuc.edu/secure/subscribers/199905g.html

I haven't looked into it further, but the few pages I looked at were all from 1999 so maybe it's not available anymore. I certainly haven't heard of it before....

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness ... Gail, that has to be the most beautiful orchid I've ever seen! That site has some really nice orchids!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, except for the most expensive ones, I think what we find in the local places are prettier than most of theirs. I am going to start looking for them...................mine aren't blooming on the porch anymore. I don't think they are getting enough light, but I am afraid to put them on a table where they get our hot south sun right now. How much sun do yours get??????????

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have heard of so many problems that can be cured with cinnamon............now I am curious.

(Zone 1)

Gail, no sun! I had mine hanging on the pool deck which was shaded by a huge Schefflera tree ... then my DH butchered the tree way back and my orchids were getting sun burned. Even though they were hanging inside the screened pool enclosure, the sun is so intense down here, screen doesn't filter much of the sun out! So, I moved them all to a tree in the backyard. That tree was full of squirrels and they were tearing my orchid baskets apart, pulling labels out and also the plants and moss! The Scheff has leafed back out so I moved all of the orchids back to the Schefflera tree and told DH not to trim it again! LOL. They are doing really well and get very bright light but absolutely no direct sun, not even filtered sun. The tree is on the SW side of the house, really intense sun so it would scorch them for sure! I started feeding them with VF-11 and then the Better Gro Bloom Booster fertilizer and they started budding out and blooming.

Yep, apparently cinnamon is an antifungal. And a good one since it is natural!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Better Gro Bloom Booster and V11 is a good idea...........thanks for telling me about the sun.........I would have ruined all of them. I haven't ever given them a bloom booster. I am supposing that Walmart has that brand........

(Zone 1)

I had to get it at Home Depot now that our Wal-Mart's have emptied out the inside garden centers for Christmas stuff. I was running low and went to buy some and was so shocked to see the inside garden area totally bare! Today I was in there and they have all Christmas stuff on the shelves! I don't know why they are doing that all of a sudden down here in Florida! Last year on one of the forums I heard someone talking about that and I thought it was really weird. We grow down here year round so I didn't think they would ever empty out stuff in the garden center in winter. The outside garden center is still full of plants but the inside where they sold all the fertilizers, pots etc is totally empty. They tell me they won't stock again until after the holidays! Grrr ... but, that's okay, I like HD & Lowes too!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so excited. We had a cold front last night and the temperature is 65 outside!! It will only get to 90 degrees today.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

whoo hooo I'm getting that cold weather too! Daytime temps low 80's and tonights going to be a whooping low of 47 Yippie!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

No! We can't have too much cold yet! Can we settle for cooler weather for awhile? I've got some gourds outside that still needs growing time!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't worry, Nichole. The heat index will be 93 today (smiling)

(Zone 1)

Woo Hoo ... we are having a bit of a cool down too! Low to mid 80's daytime and mid 70's at night! Here's my ten day forcast : http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/ski/tenday/32119?from=36hr_topnav_ski

You know what? It's October now!!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/908735/

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I know we've moved to the October thread but I wanted to make another comment on the effectiveness of cinnamon that Amy and Keyring were talking about above.....

My cousin and I both have severe issues with Deer eating our outside plants and we have tried a multitude of things to stop them (don't let the plant title of "deer resistant" fool you, when fall is here and the deer are stocking up for winter they will eat ANYTHING in your garden!)

.... so my point being that we have finally found a natural product called Deer Solution to spray on our outside plants and it WORKS ......and the main ingredient is cinnamon oil!! You have to spray (bottle attaches to your hose) every two inches of new growth (the deer keep testing and will eat the new growth) but if you keep with it the cinnamon oil product does the trick!

Cinnamon is my new favorite "natural" product!

That is great to know Brenda! I have a friend here who asked me a few years ago what was a good deer deterrent! She was having a problem with deer grazing in her garden and I didn't have a clue what to tell her to use! She is out in a more country like setting than me with lots of woods, lots of deer!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Is there a difference between cinnamon leaf oil and cinnamon bark oil? I'm looking at the ebay site that Hillbilly_Gran posted the link for (for the neem powder), and they also have different kinds of cinnamon oil . . . very confusing . . . (for me, anyway!).

(Zone 1)

I googled cinnamon leaf oil vs cinnamon bark oil and found this: http://www.cocogreen-international.com/cin-leaf-oil.htm
but it just talks about the color difference. And, this which just lists the difference in scent of the two: http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/cinnamon-leaf-essential-oil-p-215.html (Cinnamon leaf has a warm, spicy, warm clove like smell - if you want the scent of cinnamon spice use the bark oil)

So much to catch up on..you all always have so many pretties to post..Awesome pics everyone : )

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Deer Solution! wow.

The funny thing about these milder active ingredients is that they turn up in all kinds of products, not just ones targeted for the specific purpose you want.

Rain, I'm new! What is "Market place??

(Zone 1)

kivit: On your home page, at the top middle of the screen underneath Guides and Information, you will see Marketplace in green, click there and it will take you to the Marketplace where DG'ers sell their products here!
