BOX OF SUPRISE SASE BRUG CUTTINGS

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Bettydee, I am very new to brugs so I only have 2 plants only one with pods. I seem to be learning something new about them whenever I read a thread. So I guess I shouldn't look forward to blooms until next year, so sad. The pod was at least 3 inches long, not chewed on end but tiny hole near top. I thought I only needed one plant to have beautiful flowers.

Patiently waiting for Tuesday to put in my request if there are brugs left over. ^_^

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Please put my name on the list. If you have any left, I would love some cuttings.
Thanks
Linda Kay

Samigal, I think you're talking about flower buds rather than seedpods. You said pod so Dollie and I assumed you were talking about seedpods. You're correct that you need only one Brug to have buds. This photo I took several years ago is the closest I have that shows both a bud and a pod. The pod is in the foreground, It's nestled in what remains of the calx, the "bud". In the background on the left side of the photo, you'll see a bud with the corolla, the flower, beginning to emerge.

Tear open a calx to see if there is an insect inside or if the ovary (the small, swollen, slightly pointed base of the flower is damaged. If there is damage, that would cause the plant to drop the bud. Do all the dropped buds have holes in them? You might try spraying an insecticide, such as Neem Oil. Other reasons for dropped buds are temperatures too hot, erratic watering habits (not enough water or too much), age of the plant or some other envionmental problem.

Don't despair about lack of blooms this year. In that part of California, with an urban environment, you still have several months before the first frost, enough time to to get at least another flush of flowers. Fertilizer the plant twice a week and keep the soil moist at all times. Use some insecticide, either a spray or a systemic or both. You should get another flush in about 4 - 8 weeks. With luck sooner.

Thank you Betty and Dollie for setting me straight on "bud" and "pod". No wonder I am so confused. Yes they are buds and when I tore open the large one I didn't find any insect. Inside I found a flower starting to grow and it looked perfect to me. Could be not enough watering and we are still having a heat wave. I did buy some soap spray and am using that. I didn't know if I should keep soil moist at all times. I have a yellow noid from Kim of Pa. but that isn't showing any signs of buds starting. Will just be patient and keep an eye on the brugs.

Hi Dollie,
Another newbie here, if you have any left I would love to get in on this too.
Jim

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Jim, I may be mistaken, but I believe Canada has import restrictions on plants as do we.

chilliwack, BC(Zone 8b)

Bettydee,
I have them shipped to a US address for pickup and bring them across the border myself. I have found a loophole on the import requirements of tropical plants and have brought plants across on numerous occassions without any problems at customs.
Jim

chilliwack, BC(Zone 8b)

maybe "loophole" is the wrong word, I don't want to give the impession I am doing anything illegal but according to the CFIA's (our department of agriculture) rules there are situations where plants can be brought into Canada without any problems or import papers
Jim

Thank you cannagirl, glad to hear I'll be getting some brug cuttings. Maybe I will be able to sleep now through the night. LOL ^_^ ^_^

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Jim, Thanks for clearing that up for me.

st catharines, Canada

I get my plants shipped to an address in the US, and then smuggle them over..........I know , I know but I just have to have them. There is no place in Canada where you can get them.So Jim, I would really like to know more about that loophole.
Thanks Maryanne

I have an import license and can carry any plants across the border as long as there is no soil. We have a flower shop and most of our plants come through Canada.

The problem is, people who work at the border. i can drive through in 5 minutes sometimes with cuttings, then next week the person working there will have had a bad day and it is a nightmare. No problem into the US, just Canada. I had one man who even wanted to take a small packet of 8 seeds that had accidentally been left in my car.

There are good growers all over Canada. You need to ask around. I only live 8 miles from Canada, i know several very good brugmaniacs.

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Jim, I've shipped plants/seeds to Canada and other locations around the world.....always as Brenda stated, soil free and making sure plants are pest/disease free before shipping. All this packaging is ALWAYS dressed up to look like I'm sending a gift rather than plants. So far, I've been very lucky and haven't got "caught". Most of us plant lovers will bend the rules just a little to obtain our sought after plants. I do keep any plants that arrive from other countries in a period of quaratine until I'm sure they are safe to put with other plants.

I also have a PPQ permit with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to obtain plants from other countries. It gets rather expensive going the legal route with the Dept. of Ag. For the most part, shipping costs more than the plants do. The ONLY time I use this permit is if I can't get my hands on those most wanted plants any other way. Another importing negative for me is the two year quaratine law.....you can't sell, trade, or give away imported plants until released by the Dept. of Ag. Plants are inspected in New Orleans upon arrival to the states (for Louisiana) and again every 3 to 4 months. This can get to be a drawback if your time is very limited. I have to say, all my imports are well worth the money spent and all the rules & regulations I've dealt with......but it sure would have made things easier had they just been put in a box and shipped to me :)

Lol AuntB.....you all are very welcome. I purchased alot of these brugs, but just as many were given to me by Caren (Heavenscent), Brenda (Seedsprout Nursery), Paul, Ken & Maggi, Christa, Delisa, Brenda (theraglady), Dottie & Pete, Trish Ann (my sister), Nadine, Daisy , Elva and many others over the years.Without them sharing with me those boxes wouldn't have had but half the cuttings. I just wanted to pass the kindness around they showed to me.

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Imazadi, sent you mail.

Hummingbird, don't send money yet. Don't know how many cuttings will be left to fill the rest of sase boxes. I'll post after shipping the next 5 boxes.

Jim, will try to get cuttings up your way.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I still want in, I'm watching & waiting.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Dollie, I just wanted to let you know I finally got my box Saturday afternoon. Thank you so much for the cuttings. I was SOOOOOOOO happily surprised at all the cuttings you sent. I especially want to thank you for the Creamsickle cutting. The four year old plant I had started going downhill while overwintering in the greenhouse and finally died this spring It's one of my favorites. It made me sick to lose it. Now I have a replacement thanks to you.

I can't list all the ones I got because I'm not at home as I write this, but I'm sure it was similar to the other boxes. Thank you again.
Veronica

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Veronica, Creamsickle is one of my all time favorite brugs too. Glad you got her replaced and I've really enjoyed sharing with everyone.
