You're correct that you need only one Brug to have buds. This photo I took several years ago is the closest I have that shows both a bud and a pod. The pod is in the foreground, It's nestled in what remains of the calx, the "bud". In the background on the left side of the photo, you'll see a bud with the corolla, the flower, beginning to emerge. Tear open a calx to see if there is an insect inside or if the ovary (the small, swollen, slightly pointed base of the flower is damaged. If there is damage, that would cause the plant to drop the bud. Do all the dropped buds have holes in them? You might try spraying an insecticide, such as Neem Oil. Other reasons for dropped buds are temperatures too hot, erratic watering habits (not enough water or too much), age of the plant or some other envionmental problem. Don't despair about lack of blooms this year. In that part of California, with an urban environment, you still have several months before the first frost, enough time to to get at least another flush of flowers. Fertilizer the plant twice a week and keep the soil moist at all times. Use some insecticide, either a spray or a systemic or both. You should get another flush in about 4 - 8 weeks. With luck sooner. |
