You are so funny Dave. Boy, has she got you trained. LOL, Jeanette
part II on basic how to propagation based on my experience
Shhhh its my secret. Its how I get to do what I want to... within reason LOL
Or is it the other way around??? LOL
Jeanette
Coulllllld bee ...I just know it keeps the peace in the house. and with 2 teenage nieces living here I do not need more DRAMA!!! LOL
Thanks Everyone, Please don't feel sorry for me with the hurricanes, I know you all have tornadoes and I usually have at least a week to prepare. This past season was incredibly light, it was just the last storm that shredded the plastic sides. Hopefully it will all be repaired in a couple of weeks.
Dave, I really appreciate the links and it is nice that you understand the "coastal cold". It is different. I used to live in the desert and it is a very different cold than what we dealt with there. LOL I remember one year, I was planting a bed on pansies and snapdragons in january on the golfcourse here and DH called to tell me it was 14 degrees and the wind chill made it feel like 6. It was all I could do not to say " Please don't ever call me at work again!" plus or minus a few other choice things. LOL
I am not sure of what the new GH will look like. I do know it will be larger than what I had and will probably built as cheaply as possible because DH is getting laid off next week. We may just cover the wooden frame with plastic for this year and then buy the poly sheets next year when one of us goes back to work.
Maybe if I wait, I can get plans off the net and build a hoop house next year. That would come in real handy.
What we did for this first cold snap is staple plastic to the porch above the windows and then I put as many plants as possible in as close together as possible and secured the plastic underneath them with bricks. This will come in handy because our temps, will be back in the 50's toward the end of this week.
The real tropical plants, like the epis and bird of paradise and some vines, went right into the aviary. I heat the aviary and I knew I wouldn't heat it and another gh too.
All in all everything has survived the first cool snap and I am off to find cloning supplies. Thanks again for the links, I have some searching to do. Linda
Linda:
Sorry to hear about the job loss. I do understand cheap. DW is an accountant so she watches every penny. I found some pipe benders for making hoop houses on ebay I think I may even have some plans some where on the hard drive. Just let me know when you are ready and I will see if I can find them. I do have plans for a pvc hoop house if you are interested in them. I am glad to hear everyone made it through the cold snap.
Dave
Aw geez, to heck with the storm, I'm more worried about the lay-off! Best of luck to you and your DH, I hope you're able to weather this storm with a minimum of damage.
Aviary - you must be a bird person. Do your birds not eat your epis?
Thanks Sheryl, Don't worry about the lay off, He has already retired and just went back to work temporarily to "save our sanity". He was bored out of his mind and we knew the job was only temporary. Chances are they will call him back in the spring when business returns to normal. He is a maintenance engineer for a local resort. ( fancy name for an electrician, air conditioning/ heating/ handy man).
Yes, I am definitely a bird person. I raise quaker parrots, cockatiels and english budgies. I started doing this 5 years ago when Doctors told me I couldn't work at my normal job any more. I knew I had to have something to do and I could take care of birds without pain most of the time.{ ( I've had 3 spinal surgeries and the DRS. are talking about doing more) I am rebelling.} I currently have about 50 i think. I don't let the birds near the epis Sheryl, The birds have one side of the aviary and the epies get the other. LOL The birds flight only encompasses 1/2 of the building.
Dave, Thanks for the offer of the plans. I may well take you up on them soon.
I will send pics as I get the projects going . Right now I seem to be spinning my wheels. Thanks again, linda
Turks Cap- Malvaviscus (or maybe it's Malvoviscus) When I was living in Houston, we had a shrub of this at school. Some of the teachers wanted starts of the plant. In late winter I took some stems (the leaves had fallen, as I remember) and made up 7 or 8 one-gallon pots with several cuttings in each pot placed vertically (not horizontally). I even used ordinary soil from a flowerbed. I watered them good and put them in a building where there were large windows. They rooted and grew like Topsy- I think every stem took root. Within only a few weeks they were full of leaves. It was one of the easiest and most successful propagation jobs I've ever undertaken.
DP what the ???
Linda I can simpathize with you. I am a back walking wounded as well. I have to do a little go lay down do a little more go lay down. Its that way all day every day. So I do understand. Sorry to hear you are having more issues with it. I have leveled off with a pain pump and nerve stimulator both implanted to fight the pain. I usually don't talk about it much because of the long drawn out story as I am sure you have one longer than mine. Don't over do it. Kepp smilin it makes everyone wonder what you are up to.
Dave

DP checking in. What does your "DP what the ???" mean? I'm responding to the post from Oct. 2 at 7:34 AM. Do you mean somebody has to have special privileges to post here, or that my post wasn't relevant to the topic? I'm sorry that you have back trouble, but your most recent post about that doesn't exactly pertain to propagation.
Ummm - I think it's been so long since you "checked in" that it appeared that you had perhaps posted on the wrong thread. I was certainly confused.
After all, it's only been almost a month... sheesh. No need to get wrapped around the axle.
Linda, it sounds like a wonderful set up. Do you have pics posted on another thread? I bet you find the birds very relaxing. Especially if they're no where near your epis, lol!
Pagancat- You and a few other people on Dave's sure are good at intuiting when somebody is "wrapped around the axle" or whatever you want to call it. Good of you to "take up" for Poohbear, though. Gotta stick together.
Yup, you find me quite loyal towards people who are kind and try their best to keep these forums pleasant, like Dave has.
Thanks so much for your input, I'll treasure it. Have a nice day!
DP: I guess I read your post too fast and it kind of through me at first glance. I guess I was expecting a question or something... Not sure what. You are welcome to post here anytime you want to. Sorry if I got you upset. It just felt like it was a post in the middle of a conversation. I am probably wrong it just hit me as a wee bit different.
DP : It seems I am off base totally today. I thought somethingwas wrong today just could not put my finger on it. The ole brain is otl (out to lunch). Hopefully with some rest I'll do better. Sorry for that.
Dave
Any one read the article on saving rain water for the garden? It looked like a good subject to kick arround and maybe get somethoughts from everyone. I would say we all get on that thread but its an article and the questions as I understand it is only seen by the author and the comentee. Please correct me if I am wrong, or if its not something anyone has wondered about.
Dave
I missed that article, I would have a problem with it though beacuse of the mosquito population and the dogs. I have already had 1 dog treated for heart worms and during the peak months I almost can't bear to work outdoors.
Our temperatures will be warming up again this week, we will be going back into the 50's at night. It will be a nice relief.
Cheryl Sometimes the birds are relaxing, but I always love their conversations. Sometimes they are just boogers! I have a couple of meanies. Most of the time thought they are like a bunch of little clowns.
Ibartoo, do your birds talk? I don't know, do you have a place where you can get away from them?
LOL, I used to have a mynah bird. That bird talked so much and I would have to leave the house for any peace and quiet. Even if I covered the cage it didn't quiet it.
I don't know if you have any of them, I never see any for sale or anything. There used to be such a quarantine on them that I think it wasn't cost effective to import them. Maybe you can't even do that any more.
But the mynahs pick one voice, normally the one they hear the most, and mimic that one. My mother couldn't even tell the difference between my voice and that bird. Even my daughter would get so mad at me because the bird would call her out of the bathtub. She would think it was me. She fell for it every time.
Do you know anything about them?
Whoops, off subject again. Are we hyjacking this thread? Gotta quit that.
Jeanette
There may be a bird or fowl group. When somebody sees a thread named Propagation, I think they anticipate that it pertains to propagating plants.
Guess it would be nice, even in regular telephone conversations if not another subject were entered into the conversation. Might be kind of boring tho. LOL, think some people need to lighten up.
Jeanette
Let's see.... propagating.... birds....
ibartoo, do you breed your birds???
>smile<
There, all better!!!
ROTFLMAO. Myna bird calling out of the bath... thats funny....real funny. Hey chat all you want as long as its followable and I don't get confused ... HMMM oops too late dazed and confused all over again.
Yes, Jnette, Almost all of my birds talk, but I can get away when I need too. I have one that will call the dog and then scream as tho the dog is trying to get it. I haven't seen Mynah birds since I was a kid.
I think Dp, may be right. I seem to have hijacked this thread and didn't mean to. I am sorry if I offended anyone.
Ya wanna talk birds, dmail me. If not, it's back to plants.
I am working on my heat box. I keep saying that more as a motivator than an actual account of my time. I have begun the process and will post it as I get back too it. I have had a pretty neat idea.
Right now, I need to clean the bird house and then my house and then I can work on my projects. I will try to post some pictures of it next week.
Linda
Howdy:
Cross talk is fine. The thing that through me was the answer to something awile back with no reference to it. I felt like I walked in on a conversation or it was a post that was suposed to go to another thread. Hijack all you want. We are suposed to be here to have fun and I belive thats the most important thing? Hey linda when you finish the birds house you want to come over and clean mine? LOL
Dave
You say cross talk is fine. Are you arbiter of this thread, this group, or Dave's? I don't see you listed as an Uber. If people want to visit about off-topic things, they need to d-mail. The title of this thread is PROPAGATION, and you and others can make lame jokes all you want to, but anything else is inappropriate for this thread. There's no need to reply, because I'm deleting this thread and won't see it. Have fun being silly.
You know My 1st instinct was to dmail and ask him what his deal is, but I think he is wanting just that. I am not sure if he was mad at me for not understanding his 1st post or what. no I am not the one in charge of Daves Garden or an "UBER" as they put it, but I did start the thread so I am sorry if I feel responsible for its content and direction it goes, and I will continue to do so unless the group gets together and asks me to stop. I don't think I have ever blasted anyone for putting in their experiences in the thread. Please join me in not lowering our selves to the standard of arguing over their attitude and feeding the ego I believe is behind the blast on our thread.
Am I wrong?
Dave
Wow, they grow some of them pretty snotty in Texas don't they? SOME I said.
The thing dp missed is that there are a lot of threads under propagation forum that he/she could have gone to if they didn't like ours.
Jeanette
Don't worry about it Dave. Like I said, there are other threads under the propagation forum he can go to if he doesn't like what we do.
Jeanette
I agree. Don't go away mad....just go away... especially if we are too silly
Dave
Some people's kids..... sheesh.
Yea I agree. I think he was just waiting for a chance to slam me... oh well. NA NA NA NA hey hey good bye.
Well, ever onwards & upwards, eh?
So what seeds are we sowing at this late time in late fall. I have sown 500 orangeola JM, 100 Cedrus atlantica, 100 happy returns DL's, tomorrow I will sow another 100 orangeola JM and 100 stella de oro DL. I am getting ready to take winter cuttings on The JM and red leafed Norway maple in front of my house. From the back yard I am planning to collect cuttings from my norway maple, lavender and a white single flower with red eye in the center, some oak acorns as well as some Hick's yew.
Later I am going to plant 100 red maple's and 300 pink Pampas grass. I guess I am gonna be hit with a run away green house.
Lorraine is starting a welcome to DG newbie's. If we could all pitchin and send her some of our extra seeds we have so ahe has a great selection of seeds to offer. I am planning to send he some of the stuff I have. I feel like I have been blessed with a great group of friend from the propagation thread and the others I have traded with last spring, kind of a pay it forward thing. Lorraine would you prefer dmails or to post your mailing address? I do not want to post your address with out your permission. I think its a great idea and should be done as much as possible.
Dave
No, that's not a good idea Dave. Posting her address. She can d-mail it to whoever.
Jeanette
I thought so, thats why I asked her and she can post it if she wants too.
Dave
That, or we can get it off of the address exchange if she has it posted there. Great idea, Lorraine .
I just ordered a gosh-awful amount of seed from the Summer Hill seed co-op - if you're interested, we made the 35% discount mark and they have some unusual seeds.
I think it is a great idea, I have plenty of seeds I can share too.
Dave what are orangeola? i don't think I have ever heard of those? Do you sell all those maples, cedars and daylilies?
your greenhouse must be huge!
it is raining here all day today, so I won't be working outside, instead my day will be devoted to Bible study and research.
Our temps have gone back up into the 70's during the days and 50's at night. I love this time of year. There is no humidity it is wonderful.
I am rooting some brugmansia, passiflora and snail vine, and I would like to root some candy corn vines too, but I am not sure about the process for those.
Is anyone familiar with manietta inflata? It is absolutely gorgeous and I would love to roots a bunch so that I can share them.
i'm off to get started, I will check in again later, Linda
Linda:
Orangeola is a japanese maple variety. I am hopeing to sell some of the stuff I grow, so far its been very few but I only listed my red bud trees and dogwood. Last year I traded all my Japanese maple seedlings. I have an 8X10 greenhouse. I wish it was really big but I am making due. My plan is to line the south side of the house with flats of things ready to sell and get busy on ebay DG's market place and a few other places to sell. Most of what I have so far is stuff that we will plant around the house. Some of the stuff will be used as stock plants to cut from.
I know I am going to drive DW nuts with it all. Hey she keeps pushing me to comitt to something so here it is. The plan is also to make enough to cover a vacation. Not a very lofty goal but I only have a little bit of energy to devote to this and its only a hobby. Alas... If I only had a bit of cash I would buy a couple of acres set up hoop houses and start big time growing. That was the plan when I got out of school. Go to work as a grower for about 10 years and then start my plan on the side part time and grow it into a full time operation. Well I have the knowledge and the brain power to make it work but not the ability to do it in a large scale.
The plan is this fall to plant up the left over dogwoods and red buds keep planting seeds and just to do what I can when I can. Oh yea anyone need yapon holly seeds? I have a blue zillion of the little buggers. I finally spotted the signs that the Japanese maple in the front yard is ready to harvest the seeds. So now I am going to be going around town picking seeds off everyJM that I remember where it is. We have a good friend who has 2 weeping thread leaf Jm's one red and one green. They must be 20 years old and only 4 ft tall at the most. Really first class specimines.
Any hints on what I should price my little JM's for? I was thinking 99 cents each, what do you think? Anyone else out there selling their plants or are we just growing for fun? I think we hit this one earlier but got limited response.
I will take a pic of the JM out front. We will be cutting it down so I want to propagate as much as I can this winter. DW thinks its in the way of the walk and overgrown for its spot. Hey how about a vote on the tree???
I will be back on later this afternoon
Dave
Where's the picture Dave? Or is that coming this afternoon? I would love to have one each of the weeping Threadleaf red & greens. Actually, I would love to have 2 each to make sure I end up with them. Problem is, I doubt I can afford even one.
You know Dave there are so many different maples that we can't really know how much to give you an idea on without knowing what they are. I used to get emails from Ken somebody who grows maples and sells the seeds and plants. Do you know anything about him? But, when I tried to buy from him his email address wouldn't work for me.
So I haven't heard from him in several months. I bought seeds once but before I could have used the plants I traded them away. I don't know if they were ever grown out or not.
Jeanette
