Dear Chicken Fairy

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I have tucked my layers in, they are counted and safe,
the silkies are nestled all nice and warm in their baskets,
the little dogs have finally settled after being invaded by the layers today and having all their food stolen.. but not to worry, I made up for it with a touch of sirlion to make them forget the invasion.
Stella the goat has taken to sleep on top of the food buckets.. I don't know why, but I guess shes happy, she has a nice toasty bed, but chooses to stretch across 3 plastic flat-topped totes. Who am I to question.
The 101 cornish chicks are warm & toasty in the garage in their new bed. They have 2 red lights and a dark warm spot, plenty of water and I have removed their food for the night. Yes, they do grow by the minute.

Chicken Fairy, it has been a full and exausting day, for us all. It has been both physical & emotional, and I believe a lot has been said online today that I am sure tomorrow in the light of day many of us might wish we hadn't typed... Chicken Fairy.. how I wish you could sprinkle some of your dust tonight and have everyone wake up in the morning under a new and refreshed frame of mind.

Daves Poultry & Livestock is where I come to be with my friends and share my day and learn with my friends that have things in common with me.. These folks here, Chicken Fairy, understand me.. they don't roll their eyes they way my family does when I panick if a rooster has a hurt comb.. or a crooked toe.. or just coos in a funny way..

Help us Chicken Fairy.. Help us to be the family we were yesterday, be that again tomorrow,

Thanks for listening Chicken Fairy.

wow.... whatever happened here... I am sooo glad I missed it!
I hate controversy :oD LOL!
and LL you took the 'word' right out of my mouth!

I absolutely love DG and all it has to offer. nowhere else on the 'net' can I find people who are avid about gardening, and swapping crafts, and poulty as they are here on DG. DG has become my 'extended family' and I sure hope we can all get along and play nice ^_^ part of that means that just like with real family...sometimes we just need to bite our tongue...er...sit on our fingers to stop them from clicking 'send' when we are upset about something. I sometimes just walk away and read a book or work in the garden and by the time I get back online I'm able to forgive and forget. If I'm not able to forgive and forget... I dont get back online yet! LOL!

((hugs)) to ALL

I am invisioning my lil chicks taking over my puppies house.... THAT is definitely where puppy will draw the line! LOL!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Good morning all..
Fresh as a daisy here..

Claire that beauty is Allie, a favorite, has had a wonderful personality since the day she arrived. She is just under 6 months old and is an Ameracauna.

The igloo house actually belongs to the little dogs.. or so they thought.. LOL

Wow, Allie is just gorgeous! I love her color and her overall appearance. To hear that she has a wonderful personality makes me all the more envious! LOL! But I think it's cute that we both have a chicken named Allie!

LOL

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

When Allie was little we use to take her and the cornish (U & ME) and teach the dog to be patient.. there is a thread here somewhere.. Allie spent a lot of time with me and the others had the cornish.. Anyway months have passed and each chicken has grown into their own personality.. and we often wonder how much they remember..

Well yesterday Cole (the lab) needed his ears (allergies) cleaned out.. and of course as soon as he sees me with a bottle and calling his name he plays the coy game. I caught up with him outside the chainlink fence.. the chickens were loose on the inside and the dog and I out.. cole was laying on the ground and ALL the chickens are peering through the fence with their heads cocked asking what was wrong.. I got the first squirt of goo in his ear and of course he jumps and flipps, it's so dramtic.. I still had hold of him.. but it scared all the birds off.. they ran out the gate to find bugs to eat.. a much quieter pasttime.. except one chicken... Allie, she came around the fence.. by this time I was sitting on cole (not really sitting, just holding) I had finished both ears and was just rubbing and talking.. Allie comes over and gives him several very sweet little pecks on the nose.. not really even pecks more like little nudges.. "hey buddy, you okay?" I wonder if it's just me romatisizing again.. or do they really remember?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

That is so sweet - it really does make you think that they remember things. I believe that a lot of animals remember things. When I was a child, about 6 or 7, I bottle-fed two lambs whose mother had died. It was when I was visiting my grandfather in England for about 6 weeks. I bottle fed them every day and gave them names - Tanya and Jemima. Anyway, as they grew while I was still visiting, I would play with them in their pen and just spend a lot of time with them. The next year when I went back, we went to see the sheep field. I stood on the edge by the gate and called out their names and these two sheep come running out of the flock up to the gate to see me. They did that every year thereafter until they were "gone." I later learned (like maybe 5 years ago, so MUCH later) that research has shown that sheep have the capacity to remember about 200 different other sheep faces and that is how they know one another, and they also have the capacity to remember different humans.

Funny, I never ate lamb again after bottle feeding those little girls.

So my vote is that Allie remembered!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

At the risk of repeating myself.. she was a beautiful baby...

Awwwwww.....just wanna reach out and give her a little belly rub! What an adorable little chick she was, and how appropriate that she would grow up into such a stunning hen. Lucky you! I will be on the lookout for chicks that look like her!

I just got 12 "Delaware Blue" hatching eggs and am hoping they will be sort of like Allie's color, maybe a bit darker.

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

we got sprinkled... can you feel it!!!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

aw, how sweet i needed some fairy dutsing...

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol, well I for one was able to 'dodge' that sprinkling! lol!

got a dmail from a lady here in town who said there were 3 RIR's running loose in her neighborhood. She was able to catch one of them, dont know what happened to the other two.

You all should have seen the look on poor DHs face when I told him I was headed over to her house to help her :oD He thought I was bringing home more chickens! LOLOL!

anyhow she caught the chicken and has her in a doggie crate for now, I took her some food and chicken scratch...and my temporary kennel that I had built... so hopefully her RIR will be happy.

Newbie question here.... but I'm pretty sure that chickens are happier in a group? at least 2? but solo they can get depressed?

Lodi, United States

Yes, very depressed. I think the CF has sprinkled someone--it not you, the poor woman who rescued one. You must warn her: 1) the chicken needs company. 2) she has been dusted and the outcome is not pretty.

The only way I can see that you have dodged the bullet is if the original owner comes forward to claim them. It is time to offer obeisances to the Great CF. DO IT!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol... and I'm at my limit...well, over my limit! lol! I have 4...only allowed 2! so, maybe one of mine can go keep the new one company?! teehee!

I think she's going to look for the others too....not sure what happened to them ? they've been loose in the neighborhood for a few weeks and no one tried to help them :(

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

That's like Rosie was. But she's my bestest chicken now!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yes, give the lady one of your BA roos, QUICK!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

no...no roos here! I hope, I hope! lol

funny thing...she googled chickens and fremont ca and up popped all my dg posts! lol! so she registered with dg so she could send me a dmail :oD I tried my best to convince her to join in on the DG poultry forum :oD we shall see if she appears .... would be kinda nice to have another chicken newbie here in my hometown :o) teehee

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

too cool... i could have sworn one or two of your BAs had that BIG spot on his head... HIS head...

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

whats a BA? nope no roos here! I have 2 PBR, One is bigger than the other...but the big one is mean! she's my hand pecker... gets up on the food bin and waits for me to open the gate, then flies right at my hand to get whatever I have in it! LOL!

that is how i found DG in the first place i was researching and up popped one of TF's post's

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

all my fault you are now stuck in Ohio... sorry!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I think my son was sprinkled.. Saturday afternoon I ask him if he wants to go to the feed store to "look"... he said "You're gonna buy chickens aren't you" (I was all prepared to defend myself) I said "just one" (jokingly) He says "Yeah right, One Dozen" LOL We both laughed so hard.. We got 3 more Aracaunas. He spent the entire day outside with me helping to get pens built... We didn't get much done for all the playing around.. but it was a rare treat to spend time TOGETHER doing the SAME things! That is not common with a teen..

Thank you CF for bringing us a common interest to really love. It is so fun to spend time with my son.. I'm really happy.

Clarkson, KY

Boy-o-Boy, What Y'all said. Amen. Had I been able to put in my 2 cents worth it would have been in ages ago. Thanks for being here and forgiving me some foibles and reveling in others.

ZZs -He does look really good in a chicken, as I recall. Maybe it's just meant to be...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

That is so nice your son and you with the chickens. I think it is bring me and my whole family closer. They will all (except the grandson he dont care what they are he just loves them) ask me what is that one, or that one. Are they laying yet. My SIL will help me put them up if hubby isnt home. they know I love my birds.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

We named this one Hootie... she looks like an owl... Oh I love this lil baby..

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh how cute, I could not stop at just 3. I send the kids to the feed store now, no temptation until spring. I do not I repeat I do not want to winter chicks. If I dont have to that is. I have this feeling, I might be helping someone and she has a bator. 2 of them...............

Lodi, United States

Hmmmm. Robinson's feed has Ameraucanas........

Clarkson, KY

Now I know I want to start that breeding program!!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hootie is a Cutie!

Hey you can use an igloo dog house with chickens ? ! :) please tell oh please tell . i have one and it needs a use . i don't have a dog LOL ok i will have chickens soon .
Yeah i think i felt some CF dust oh sparkle sparkle puuuuuurdy ooohhh aaaahhhh

Clarkson, KY

Our chickens have taken over the dogs igloo. It works wonders. 'Course my dog doesn't like the coop nearly as well as they like that igloo. You might add a roost by using some of that wonder epoxy stuff...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I think the only thing about the igloo dog house is that it doesn't have a door, so predators could get in at nighttime. So use it in an enclosed area...

Clarkson, KY

good point, I was assuming an enclosed area.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I am watching free cycle for them

yes right enclosed most definitly
good to know thanks :)
