Fall-flowering bulbs

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I agree and it is very reliable for me. Must get more colchicums!

This is crocus banaticus today - a lovely and unusual shape I think.

banaticus is certainly unique! No sign of mine yet...still no sign of kotychanus either...hope they didn't die!

It's still early for your zone Todd isn't it? Don't give up.

pajaritomt, Waterlily is easy to grow but can sometimes take time to settle down and grow properly. I split the two originals I had (1 other didn't grow), had quite a few bulbs, and moved them. They seem to like one of the places I put them in more than the other, not so smothered! They have now multiplied well again since 2004 and were not that big when split.

Here's one bulb multiplied,

A few more, couldn't quite fit them all in.

Here's my Allium callimischon haemostictum (I copied and pasted, lol, hope you spelled it correctly Galanth!). I had it in a pot for a year then put it in the ground, near the south wall and my Dahlia imperialis. It's increased nicely in the 3 years (I think).

wallaby,
Thanks for the info about Waterlily.multiplying. That is what I had hoped they would do. I have had great success with it so far.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Wow love that water lilly. I need to give that one a try!!

somewhere, PA

when do you split them?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Now is a good time when you can see where they are! Unless of course you get too cold winters, I think I did mine after the flowers went down. They are usually sold here in late August to September. They could be split when in leaf in spring too, as soon as they show would be best, in fact that would be a good time but most sellers wouldn't want to sell 'in the green'.

somewhere, PA

thanks Wallaby! I think I will split mine now. The flowers are just about spent and it will be
a few more months before the ground freezes.

I read that the best time to split is right after the foliage fades. Now the corms will have lots of roots so disturbing them could set them back.

Cyclamen intaminatum is flowering..the smallest-flowered cyclamen. Too bad the colour is so dull.

How small are they?

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

less than an inch!

somewhere, PA

well... I dug one up and it was elongated but was only one peice. So I put
it back. I'll leave 'em alone and see how the folliage looks this spring on the
other two.

These are blooming today, but I don't know if they're true crocuses or colchicum.

No leaves visible, but they're a lot smaller than most colchicums I see around here

Were there big leaves there in the spring-looking like skunk cabbage?

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Gee, you got me - but I doubt it. These are growing in my brother's yard. He's lived there for years and I probably would have noticed, but I'm not sure. Maybe I'll dig one up in a few days and see what the bulb looks like.

Claypa, you have Crocus kotchyanus..recognized by the yellow spots at the base of the petals. Still no sign of mine...I'm getting worried.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Thought it must be a crocus. Thanks for IDing that beauty, Todd.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, thanks! Here's a link to Todd's article about fall-flowering Colchicum, Crocus, and Cyclamen for anyone who might have missed it:

Cyclamen hederifolium is still going strong.

And Crocus kotchyanus is just sprouting!

I keep Crocus goulimyi in a pot since they are not reliably winter hardy here

I can see why you have to have those beauties!!

My waterlily's are all done and gone. Those crocus are really pretty.

Crocus speciousus 'Conqueror'

This is my first year growing fall blooming crocus. Got this from Brent and Becky and planted it Sep 14. They really did sprout and bloom quickly.

I also planted some Crocus speciousus 'Albus' at the same time and they started blooming last week (while I was away!) but there are more blooms this week. It looks like I might be getting second blooms from the same bulbs?

My speciosus are just sprouting...it's always mid-Nocvember before they bloom at their peak...if not covered in snow first!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

This is my first C. speciosus Conqueror on the 17th, there's a few more now but the weather soon beats them up. I have a lot of seedlings which have been there for years, really need to move them for space.

I sowed seed of Tigrida vanhouttei on 10th June 07 (thanks Deb!), have five and one flowered on 21st, another open today!
