Fall-flowering bulbs

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

In pots you should be able too, like goldenfish. I have a friend who does here in z4. He says they are incredibly easy, and he just brings the pot inside the garage along the house wall in an insulated box for the winter. I don't know about Todd. Maybe he gets too much rain for rain lilies, but under the eaves of a house . . .

Calgary, AB(Zone 3b)

Tammy, just thought I'd better mention it before it's too late... the fall-blooming bulbs are available in fall, just like the spring ones, as strange as that may seem.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I've seen them for sale here years ago (not recently) and tried them but didn't understand the cycle. I am growing Nerine no problem (indoors) so I could probably grow Zephranthes if I ever saw them again.

Tottori, Japan(Zone 9a)

Hello boojum,Leftwood and altagardener
Zephyranthes rosea is sensitive to cold so I brings the pot inside
and stop watering durling winter. I start warering at May and put
the pot in litght shade in the garden. It is very easy to grow so please
try if you have a chance.

Todd,
You can find many kinds of Zephyranthes in Plant Delights Nursery.

I can get not so many kinds of garden variety in Japan so I envy U.S.
gardeners!

Great info. I may try some next year.

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh they are gorgeous...!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

There are many species with different cold hardiness ratings. I guess obviously, my friend doesn't have rosea. I don't know what species he has, or, maybe I am mistaken about how he winters them.

Another new Colchicum for this year...autumnale album 'Plena'

Todd - I have a substantial number of Zephyranthes I grew from seed. I'm sure
you could grow them from seed too with your skills!

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I'm trying Rhodophiala from seed...4 years later they are still only thumb-sized bulbs!

On the plus side, Bonitin sent me seed of C. coum (silver-leaf forms) last July and they are just sprouting with lovely silver leaves!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I'm also trying rhodophiala seeds. One year later I need a magnifying glass!

somewhere, PA

well.. I have Rhodophiala bulbs from seed that have been multiplying like crazy.
I would be happy to send folks either the zephyranthes or rhodophiala bulbs. I
have way more than I need in my greenhouse. They are all blooming size.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous blooms, everyone! Such a sight for sore eyes, late summer has been so dry here, the gardens are mostly wilty and crispy. As its looking like late summer droughts are a pattern here, I'm considering adding fall bulbs to bring some color to a drab season.

Any recommendations as to bulbs that will tolerate winter/spring moisture and summer drought?

Tammy, what species of Rhodophiala do you have? I was just looking at plantfiles pics, they're lovely!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Cool, Tammy. I'd be interested!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Tammy, do you plant the Rhodopiala in the garden each spring, or in a pot?

I definitely need to get some fall blooming crocus & colchicum. I checked my normal
sources (Brent & Becky & Van Engelen & they were sold out.)

I got seeds labelled simply Rhodophiala sp.

Neal... here's a picture of the rhodophiala blooming. They are a pretty pale pink.

I can't remember... did I send you one of these or a zephyranthes earlier this year?
I remember thinking you liked pink flowers so put one in your "care package".

Tammy--
That's not a Rhodophiala--that's Habranthus robustus. If you got it from NARGS a couple of years ago--they are Habranthus robustus.

Wow! I have a spreadsheet of my seed records. I seem to have lost the hand written notebooks
which had a lot more info. :-(

Hardy Plant Society:
Rhodophiala species 02/22/04 started

Well... now I don't know what I have. The bulbs have been happily multiplying - I found one in a pot that
shouldn't have had any bulbs in them. I guess a seed fell in when I was harvesting them. Mostly they
just expand by splitting.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

you have Habranthus robustus--a long, long time ago, Habranthus was classified as Rhodophiala but not since about the 1940's or so

I get about a 100 questions every year from NARGS members to ID those--and I have grown it myself

thank you Debbie. I didn't mean to imply I was questioning your ID. I just meant that I'm wondering
if the zephyranthes were labelled correctly too. I don't seem to have any pictures of them. The rainlilies
(or so labelled) are a mix of orange & pinkish hues and are smaller than the habranthes robusus (not
Rhodophiala).

most of their Zeph seeds are correctly listed--they are coming from a different people. I put a lot of them up every year too...I figure that's one thing I can contribute that is different

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Whatever it is, I'd love one. :)

I have a daylily that everyone calls the wrong name because one nursery years ago mislabelled it. I always end up explaining this every year. Peter Saxton (dad was a hybridizer and knew the early ones) straightened me out.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

That's lovely, Tammy! So sweet how it fades to white in the center. You sent me a lovely deep pink Zephranthes, and by the way, that gorgeous begonia you sent me at the same time is blooming its heart out!

This is a new allium for me this year - Allium callimischon haemostictum and I am really pleased with it.

Love all three. WOW!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

That Allium is GORGEOUS !
Even the buds are spotted!

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Cool allium...never seen that one before.

Only late allium for me is A. thunbergii which still not open yet..better check on my kotchyanus...haven't noticed it yet.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oooohh, that Allium is extra special!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Nice pics! I have that allium too Galanth, from rareplants. I searched for a pic of it but will have lost that one from last year's computer crash, had to rush out to check on mine and it's full of flower! They are tiny too, when the sun shines again will get some pics, they are pesky little things to photograph.

I have lots of Waterlily Colchicum in flower too, most amongst old stuff though.

Deb, recognise this? Habranthus martinezii! I have 5 I think, two flowered, this on the 22nd August with finished one behind. Not much over a year from seed!

Thanks. I got my allium from Rare Plants - they have a great selection. My Colchicum Waterlily is just going over now. I never get to see much sun on my poor plants to bring them out!

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

My Waterlily is the last colchicum to bloom....just breaking the surface now.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Colchicum "Waterlily" in my garden on October 1, 2008. I have about 6 of them alive and growing, planted 5 more "Waterliliy" Colchicums Oct. 6 and 5 more Violet Queens the same day. Can't wait for this time next year. The 6 I have are already drawing comments from the neighbors. What a beautiful flower and it seems fairly easy to grow.
