CF dropping eggs in Kentucky (egg sexing)

Lodi, United States

Should we plead with the CF on his behalf? Or just let him hang and save ourselves?

Clarkson, KY

What're the odds he'll come after us from, um, Ohio?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

he's gonna get it!

Lodi, United States

'Fraid so. Poor Josh is a goner.

Clarkson, KY

Humph. Confession. I cannot candle to save my soul. Eggs went into the 'bator 2 Wednesdays ago and I cannot manage a peek inside. Opaque. This is killing me. I know I should be able to but I can't seem to get light through the egg. Just through the hole the egg is sitting in in the box over the light.

Any suggestions on candling for the candling-impaired?

Clarksburg, MO

Do you have mag lite? That is wht I use. Wht kind of eggs are you trying to candle???

I have to cup my hand round the light nd then set the egg on my hand. I turn it till i see a dark spot. Then watch the dark spot for movement.

I think so. I'll look anyway -better with my hands than with boxes...

Lodi, United States

I always remove the eggs from the incubator when I candle them. I put them in an egg carton and go sit at the top of the basement stairs in the dark and then candle them with my cool-light candler. It is always for less than 10 minutes so I count it as their 15 minutes in an open incubator. I don't candle for the last three days. The whites are easy and the browns take longer--but eventually they are all readable. I've heard the green/blue ones are impossible.

Clarkson, KY

Ok. that actually worked, kinda. My hands are cramped though. Think I'll try at night for the rest. Seeing a wide variety of development and no 'spoil' rings -wasn't that what to look for for a failed egg? I know it's in one of these threads somewhere...or about 50 of these threads...somewhere.

Clarkson, KY

The shells on mine are really dark for the most part. I candled the few light ones to get going and could see a bit but watching for movement was harder. The batteries are dying on the maglite so that may be most of my problem... Boy when I think what it could have been like to have you guys at this past spring's hatchings!!

(Zone 7b)

I use one of the small mag lights also and it works great i go in my laundry room and close the door i hold up the egg and shine it down threw the top blocking the entire end of the light. I then look threw the sides it's fun and i look forward to candling it's amazing seeing life in a shell.

OH, JOSH.... I KNOW YOUR NAME AND WHERE YOU LIVE!

Ok, did the maglite thing in a dark corner last night

Of the 14 eggs marked "F" 9 were well developed, showing mostly air sac and nothing else

Of the 4 eggs marked "M" 3 were well developed, showing mostly air sac and nothing else

3 showed no development at all

3 showed partially full indeterminate as to movement.

Will stop turning and amp up humidity Sunday evening.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

whoa, get ready!

londonderry, Australia

try your worst CF try your wost and i have been working for the DF(dove fairy) cause i got a fertile baby dove egg in the bator as well as a fully developed chicken egg with the end cracked open (air sack end) because of one stupid chicken so it is safe in the bator the membrane wasnt ruptured so i have been watching first hand how the chicken develops the whit thing in the air sack u wet it a TINY bit and it turns into a window and u can see staright in and the veins and the colour and everything then iu pop it back in the bator and the air sack drys and the window thing turns white again still i wouldnt crack the end on purpose it is to risky

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

awe, why don't the dove fairy ever come to visit me? would love to have a pair and a few pigions too!! i think i'm gonna put breeder boxes on the cockatiels cage and see if the tiel fairy comes to visit, lol. i got 10 tiels and i want babies to spoil and handrear again it's been a few years since i have been breeding any. see u all r instigators, lmbo.

Clarkson, KY

When was that Dove Fairy due? Wasn't Josh due to become a Dove momma here soon? Or whatever it is with the surrogate thing where you make up a mash and spoon feed the baby?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Grownut - this is pretty exciting! Are you going to be Commander Grownut and take those eggs into the Eggsplorer when they are imminent hatchees?

Clarkson, KY

If I can behave myself!!!:-)

Clarkson, KY

Update from HQ. Candled again. Day 17.

2 viable "M" eggs
7 viable "F" eggs
4 slightly suspicious, but possibly just slow
5 (2M3F) arrested development or incipient 'sloshies'

I have turned them 1ce a day and do it for the last time tomorrow evening. All the Fs and Ms and ?s face up? Any idea how to mark them when hatched to help me keep track? Too small for zipties and toenail polish. I neeeeeeeeeed a camera by Wednesdaaaaaay....Get it together kelly!!!

Lodi, United States

You can put them in berry boxes--those little green plastic boxes strawberries come in. You just have to make a little top and lable the boxes. Worked for me. But you need space--so have to have a single hatch in the incubator with the egg turner removed--or use a hatcher.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i use the tiny small colored zip ties they r like 4" long and 2mm i think it is. they fit from hatch u just got to cut alot of extras off. good luck and can't wait for pics!!!

Lodi, United States

I use those for the chicks too, silkiechick--I thought she was asking how to tell which chick hatched from which egg--I always think I'll know--but I never remember.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

since she marked initials as to girls or boys, why not carton hatch and check shells as they come out and use those to band them? if they roll around u might not be able to tell and they could mix together. a carton they usually stay in same egg holder or close enough to tell what egg from. i don't leave mine in hatcher to hatch all at once cuz i have a sportsman the tray is metal. i take them out wet and fluff under the brooder light so the poor things arn't freaked out over the dark. once they r totally dried and fluffed a few min later they can have those thin zip ties put on them.

hope that all made sence. i did this but it was to mark bloodlines, each stock got different colors cuz i have them in florescent colors.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I bought plastic spirally leg bands in size 4, which is ideal for baby chicks. A few needed size 5 already. Bantams definitely size 4.

Eggbid.com has packets of 10 legbands in the size and color of your choosing for $2.50 and they have up to 50 packets available, so you could bid on 2 or 3. I did that last week and got them for that price and low shipping. You can reuse them too, which is awesome.
http://www.eggbid.com/listings/details/index.cfm?itemnum=1221546036

If you want to try some #4 bands, send me a Dmail with your address and I will send you 10 of them and you can try them. They should be there in time for your hatch if you let me know pronto!

Clarkson, KY

Thanks guys -I had thought all the zipties would be too heavy weight for these little buggers! Um, I mean fluffy bundles of joy! Cant' wait DH is always nose to beak communing with them when he think no one will see.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

anyboidy get a CF drop?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

the ones i use for peeps r really thin and lightweight so if u get the really small 4" ones they should be fine it's what i use. they look to me like 2mm width.

Clarkson, KY

Not that I'm aware, but I believe Cats is running around with a target on her head...

Clarkson, KY

Do they 'outgrow' them fairly quickly. That's another of my worries with the zipties?

Lodi, United States

They do outgrow them fairly quickly--but they are easy to cut off--just cut across the locky-thing--don't try to go between the leg and the band--too risky and much harder. I have some teeny/tiny ones that are less than 3" and about 1mm--but they are all one color.

Target? I am on my knees, arms upheld, petitioning the Great Luminescent and Forgiving CF for more chicks and eggs--She, of course, knows what I, her Most Humble and Miserable of Supplicant, wants--although maybe grownut should clarify?

(Really, I don't think you people are approaching Her in the right spirit of fear and contrition. You have to lay it on really thick. She likes it.)

Clarkson, KY

Shoot, at this point we might almost build a temple and a few ceremonies of supplication, pacification, and chickification!!!

Probably oughtta start a BBEBH thread! Nothing like a public secret mission!!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

bbbeh?

Clarkson, KY

No, BBEBH!

A HATCH! 1 F marked egg just hatched. All black -6:12 amCST.

Clarkson, KY

Big Blue-Egged Bird of Happiness!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

oh wow congrats. get her marked so you can see if your egg sexing worked. Would really like to know.

Clarkson, KY

OK, some Commander I turn out to be.

The shuttle has lifted off without me!

0600 hours day 19.

Cmdr. Grownut trying to regain control. Request ground crew assistance. Strange happenings all over Chickentopia. Early launches and chicken transfers. Please investigate. Suspect highly delirious CF may be in trouble. Infectious disease a possibility.

Proceed with caution. Grownut out.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Civilian Tia here and watching and learning from the side lines.

Clarkson, KY

After all this military-speak I'm ready for the sidelines.

Clarkson, KY

One larger lifeform encapsulation module has pipped! Currently pipping module has conspicuous "M" marked on side.
