CF dropping eggs in Kentucky (egg sexing)

Clarkson, KY

Wandering in the barn, DH found a nest of 22 eggs, nobody tending them. We all know what that means -pull out and plug in the ol' 'bator! CF being a professional, maybe she's included a silkie or two. Anyway.

I'm trying out the old wives tale. I tested the eggs and found 14 potential females, 8 potential males. Put in all of the 'female' eggs and 4 of the larger 'male' eggs. No telling what will hatch!

Wish me luck, tell someone ELSE how crazy this is ;-)

Gao, Mali

Your "DH" is a little slow. I dleivered your eggs just before Gustav. Feed the extra eggs back to your chicks.

Where are your geese? I thought I told you to get some GEESE! Before another fox shows up please...

And there is no OX Fairy in your continent. You people are too closed minded to appreciate an Ox.

Someone is supposed to send you the silkie eggs. She is falling behind on the job, and will be quickly reprimanded!!! You need to set up a separate hatcher so that you can handle the different hatching dates now.

p.s. No Geese, No Silkies. Period.

Gustav just got here today! First rain we've had since June! (well maybe we had an eighth of an inch in July. Geese are waiting for me to have time to get them. The silkies? What's BA?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

BA... bah humnbug? where did CF say BA?

londonderry, Australia

i cant find it either

Clarkson, KY

Cats said it JG/BA cross -only thing I can think of is mooning. yaarggle.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, she has Jersey Giant Black Australorp crosses, from my flock...

Lodi, United States

Right, blame me!

Jersey Giant/Black Australorp crosses are the sweetest birds. My big roo is my dream man. TF will make them for you--won't you TF? How much? Well it should be $100 a chick. When I advertised Barnevelder and Marans roos on Craigslist , the man who came to see them walked out with a JG/BA under his arm. Big, beautiful and utterly loving.

Oh, I forgot! I really want to know how the spooky chick sexing goes. Even though I believe it to be merely a question of chance and have heard two diametrically opposed explanations of how to tell the boy from the girl Still, inquiring minds want to know!

i had a fellow come for a Barred Rock roo. he got a barred rock pullet, a blue bantam cochin pullet, and a JGBA roo... now he wants to get rid of his California white roos.... someone please tell CF i don't want any more roos!!!

btw, cat, ahve i mentioned how nicely Freckle has turned out WOW. his comb is so huge [April 7 hatch] it is beginning to fold over at the front. one handsome guy. not crowing YET... his body type says PBJG for sure...

Clarkson, KY

Knew it was something obvious like that.

Yeah, the spooky sexing thing'll be interesting. But if it works perfectly and I just have it backwards I'll be in rooster he**. Every one I've gotten has been beautiful but the pullets lay better.

Lodi, United States

I've noticed that too. I don't advise keeping roosters if you want eggs--just not practical.

londonderry, Australia

why

Clarkson, KY

Can't decide -eat the golden w/ black, or black silver and green, or black w/ purple, or black w/ purple burgundy and green, or the JG/BSL crosses...

Lodi, United States

Well, josh, I must admit I am not familiar with antipodean chooks--so do the hens crow and the roosters lay down there? And does the water go down the drain backwards..err...counterclockwise?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

granted roos dont' eat as much... so what is this "spooky" thing... the pointy round end?

Clarkson, KY

Something I don't know about Australian roos?

Maybe Josh was the alien life form all this time...Do YOU lay eggs?!lol

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

could be that guys think more roos make the hens compete to lay more eggs?

Clarkson, KY

Sexing by ouija/ needle I thought

Lodi, United States

TF--you have been listening to too many Texans (inside joke).

Clarkson, KY

TF - of all the places I do NOT want to go....;-)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

OK, so the needle makes a circel, its a pullet, elipse, a cockerel?

Lodi, United States

I was thinking needle too. I've given up on the pointy egg--untested. Just seems too Freudian.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yeah, would make all those little OEG eggs pullets...

Lodi, United States

Well that is one school of thought. The other is the exact reverse. There is a woman on eBay selling it as a secret 100% successful way of telling egg sex. Maybe someone should buy it and share it with the world. It would save so much money and heartache at the hatcheries.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

you would htink that, if it indeed worked, the hatcheries would have picked up on it YEARS ago... gee, wonder how many secrets i could sell on ebay.... speaking of which, only one of my sons jokes sold, and she hasn't paid yet!

londonderry, Australia

catscan it is your water that gose backwoods not ours LOL

Lodi, United States

I beg your pardon, Josh! Everyone knows water should go down the drain clockwise. Here we train it to from an early age. But perhaps your clocks run backwards too?

londonderry, Australia

nope they go clockwise and to tell the truth i have never even paid attention to whos water goes backwards (spelt it right this timeLOL) except that episode on the simpsons with the aussies that my neice watched over my house one time when i was baby sitting

Clarkson, KY

I was told needle moving straight back and forth -pullet, circle -cockerel. We'll see what hatches I guess -no use just talking about it when I've got the gift hatch right here(c'mon am I the only one who want's to know bad enough?)

So do Australian clocks go backwoods too? Joshin'

Gao, Mali

OK, grownut, you are getting all ROOS! That is what you get for Joshin' my Rep Down Under. Be sure to keep the incubator temp set a little low.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CF
Clarkson, KY
Incubator low? Wha'ffer??
Gao, Mali
Just a half a degree lower than usual.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CF

Lodi, United States

The ways of the CF are inscrutable. I think she may be referring to your Silkie or bantam eggs--when you get them. But maybe she is anticipating a temperature inversion?

Gao, Mali

Please keep your current incubated eggs just a half a degree lower than your book says.

Clear enough?

CF

Clarkson, KY

As to the meaning of the words, yes thank you...

Clarkson, KY

Checked with my chicken man again today. Straight back and forth is pullets, so unless the chicken fairy is saving her sprinkles on account of my bad behavior, I should be due for some pullets. Mentioned Harmony's method and he said "Yeah, but then you've already got the chicks hatched out instead of hatching out what you want {smirk}"

Does anybody know the reason for the temperature drop? Oh great CF?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well she is probably just soemhow seeing into the future that you equipment may fail, and having it set lower your pips would more liekly survive... my guess anyhow.... CF?

londonderry, Australia

oh my god we finaly got rid of her she isnt coming
(shouts) EVERY ONE COME OUT OF HIDING SHE IS GONE YOU ARE SAFE

Lodi, United States

Josh! Shut UP! She has spies everywhere!

Clarkson, KY

Mmm. Ask and ye shall receive and Josh is ASKING FOR IT....
