(Zone 7b)

Good Morning!! Not feeling very well had the flu couple weeks back and believe i still have a little something leftover.Lucky Charm that is a Old English Game it is the same color pattern but is smaller and has no feathers on his feet. fereal You have one of my favorites i love the tangerine Pearl and they are 8 years old WOW!!! I have been only doing doves since fall 06 and i currently have estimate here of 65 they reproduce so fast i can't keep up soon as one set of babys are out of the nest mine are starting a new batch. Do you have pics of your doves i would love to see them!!
I'm working on a down size with mine it's been Exstremely hot during this summer and i don't transport any birds during the heat.So i was at a standstill as far as moveing my birds but now the weather is cooler and i have a trip planned to sell probably 20 birds and pigeons and some my young chickens.
ZZ I will give you a better account of my pens i Raise at least 100 to 250 chickens a year and i sell all but my breeder stock and a few who have star quality or have just found a place in my heart and Because i sell chickens i have to keep them in the best condition i can as to be able to offer a healthy chicken that will be a pleasure to its new owner and that i can be confortable knowing it will survive if given proper care by its new owner.Okay there may be a question here and i will answer why do i sell my TOP reason i love chickens and i love raiseing chickens and i'm constantly breeding and finding new breeds and in order for me to do what i love i must sell what i produce. I don't sell chicks because my concience won't let me....Chicks are delicate and are quick to die and i can't have that on my mind. I don't sell a bird until it is to a viable age and that depends on the chicken usally 4 or 5 months old is good.I sell to feed and house my birds and buy feeders and waters and to be able to provide the best care i can. I Do Not!!!! Feather Trade and look down on people who do and all the breeders i know do too!!
Here is The Definition of a Feather Trader>> Someone who goes from auction sale to auction sale, they go to flea markets Shows and even homes with chickens for sale with one goal only PROFIT and thats all. They buy cheap old and sick birds from this place and sell it They have no desire to feed or house these birds and will sometimes leave them in what ever cage they buy them in. They Only Spread Disease and heartache to us true lovers of birds. Some People Here very Well could have been scammed by one they are slick willys indeed and yes i know at least 10 i know of and i tell others about them.
I know everyone on this site are true chicken lovers and i see your clean coops and plump hens and happy peeping babys GOOD JOB AND I ADMIRE YOU AND EVEN ENVY SOME!!!!{ME STANDING GIVEING YOU ALL A BOW AND THANK YOU FROM MY CHICKEN LOVEING HEART FOR ALL THE COUNTLESS HOURS OVER THE INCUBATOR AND THE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS HOPEING THAT DARN PREDATER DOESN'T RETURN!!! THANK YOU!!!!}
Sorry i got a little carried away but i'm very passionate about the treatment or miss treatment of animals.
Now About my Pens all my pens are off ground and that keeps my chickens healthy from ground contaminants like cocidiosis and worms i have individual pens for all my trios.I have large open rabbit cages where i keep my young birds and they are all seperated according to age.
I build all my pens with the chicken in mind roost, open space for wing exercise and sprawling in the sun.I isolate newcomers for 1 month before even bringing them within 100ft of my chickens and then they will still be isolated into thier own pen. Its important to me to do the best job i can to insure they get the best feed and care they deserve {i like to sleep at night}. I'm plannining on building at least 20 new pens this fall as i have more breeders now and i'm building them larger so they will have more space.
I Will send a pic of one soon. *Harmony*

Harmony, you have my upmost admiration. You are a truly bird lover. When I got my new birds I knew where they were coming from and I know his birds are healthy. They just fit right into my pen and my younger birds. it was like they needed the younger ones to watch over. All of my roos have them selves a flock of their own younger ones to watch over, and they do a good job.

(Zone 7b)

Thank you luvs2garden I just had to say how i feel and your a true bird lover too!!
GOOD JOB!!!! We all need a little encouragement for all we do for these birds and love doing it People may look at me funny when i say how intensely i watch and care for my birds HEY but all i get is compliments when they buy one and take it home. OH it's so sweet and friendly or it's feathers shine like silk and thier soooo soft. I think to myself yea i did that!!!!! I sold an elderly gentleman some birds {yes i gave him a great deal} His son in law came back 3 more times to get birds because it made his "Daddy" so happy and he said he sat for hours just watchin those birds.
NOW thats worth doing this. I give birds to and autistic little boy because he loves these birds and it has helped him and he can get the pigeons and doves to sit on his shoulder. I cry when he says to me i will be thinking of you and i say yes and i will be thinking of you too. {WEEPING}

awwwwwwwwwww that is a heart warming story. My birds give me so much enjoyment, when the guy came out to deliver my birds he said he was impressed with my minagarie(sp?) of birds. I thought they were healthy until Tamera said they looked a little funky in the feathers, so garlic went into their diet immediately. I have not sold one yet but i do need to, just cant decide which ones i want to keep yet, i will wait probably at least until they start laying. Should be end of November.

Oh Harmony... that is beautiful.
I'm a newbie, and have so much to learn. I had some "barn" chickens years ago and loved them dearly.. This is a different situation now.. so I'm on a mission to learn as much as I can so I provide the best. I've been reading and reading and soaking up as much as my brain will hold.. (LOL I'll leave that one alone)

I felt silly loving my chicks as much as I do.. but DG is my sanctuary where I can be with "like kind" of folks... Blessed is the day I found this site!!!

Thank you for your contributions.. it's awesome!

(Zone 7b)

ZZ Just always keep in mind they are your birds. All of us have our own versions of pens,feeding and
how we handle and care for our birds. Our best is how we feel and what we know for our situation works for us. My pens are not large and elaborate and i sometimes neglect to take as much time as i should with my birds to other demands. Ive seen pens that look like houses windows curtains and all. But i'm happy and thats what matters to us all.Thats what i love most about bird folks we are just folks. So do it your way follow your whims and wants and you too will be a chicken entrepreneur.

thx harmony. my autistic son is who got me started with birds. last week was his birthday, and so i rescued two pet quality silkies chicks from an overcroded situation. i was gone all day yesterday, and the small one needed extra care. it was forgotten, and died early this morning. he is so sad, and cried, and didn't want to go to church today. but he learns from these life and death situations, as much as it also hurts, the birds give him so much joy! [silkies were kept in the house, i also quarantine here]...

So sorry to hear about your son and his beloved silkie, TF. I hope that the other one will do well and be his best buddy. Just sad to hear about the situation but these things happen sometimes. Sounds like you are making it a learning experience.

What would be a comb on a chicken (at the top of the beak) is a cere. In males it is larger than in females. in some breeds there isn;t much difference.
