September blooms!!!

(Zone 1)

Barb, it is weird. I thought I had heard folks say theirs are fragrant but nada from mine. I detect absolutely no fragrance from compacta or krinkle 8 either.

Lin and Barb
It's not funny at all. I've seen posts where they describe of the fragrance on other hoyas. Very few of mine smell. The only ones so far are australie 'keysii' (which to me smells like horse urine) and carnosa which has a very mild smell and only in the morning. In the evening there is no smell from carnosa.
My pentaphlebia just finished blooming again and the smell is very slight and sweet.
Also pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' has a very slight fragrance, again sweet.
Here's a picture of pentaphlebia.

Imadigger: That pentaphlebia is so pretty! I really like the looks of that bloom!

Yuck! Ugh! Eeeeew! A hoya that smells like horse urine?! Gross! I don't want that one, LOL. I have a H. australis that I got in trade last year that was labeled H. australis keysii but until it blooms I'm not sure.

Eileen, I had to lol at your description of australis keysii! The most fragrant of any of mine is ~hands down~ H. cumingiana. It is potent and long-lasting and if I had the room, I'd grow a dozen pots of it just for the fragrance!

Barb, I am so glad to hear that cummingiana is fragrant! I have one that is doing really well and I can't wait to see the beautiful blooms (hopefully next year!) and icing on the cake if it's so fragrant too!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I have cumingiana too. At least i think it is. I'm waiting patiently for it to bloom. It was very spindly so I put it out in the sun to see what would happen. So far, so good.

Eileen, that's a great macro shot of pentaphlebia. Very sharp.
So you guys get only a faint scent from carnosa and Krinkle-8? I get a strong scent from both, chocolate-like (sorta), about an hour after dusk.
My cumingiana has not bloomed yet either, but I am REALLY looking forward to it!

(Zone 1)

Waaaa! No Fair!

I don't get any scent whatsoever from carnosa or K8! I've checked in the morning, late afternoon and early evening! Nothing, Nada, Zip, Zilch! No Fair! :( pouting here :(

Wow, my carnosa is very fragrant as is my H. pub. 'Silver Pink', which has an Incredible fragrance in the evening and throughout the night. I wonder if there are separate collections of some of the species plants and that is why some are fragrant and some are not? Or maybe more than one seedling was selected and introduced as the cultivar (which wouldn't be right) and that's why some people have plants that are fragrant and some not? That would account for some plants/cultivars being fragrant and some not being fragrant. Hmmm...

Mark, I get a chocolate scent from my carnosa also (the only ones that have bloomed for me so far have been motoskei and 'Krimson Princess', and both smell like chocolate - stronger at night).

Ok, I am going out in the dark right now to smell my Krimson Princess! Maybe I just haven't been sniffing at the right hour! Will report back ...

(Zone 1)

Ok ... I forgot, KP is out under a tree in the very dark backyard so I am not venturing out there where there might be raccoons, possums or YIKES .. SNAKES! But, on the pool deck I have a carnosa, a krinkle 8 and a compacta blooming again and Guess What?? They are fragrant! Very slight, and I can't decide what the scent is like (not chocolate to my nose) but very pleasant on all three! Oh, I'm so glad I went out there to check! And something interesting, the ds-70 and lacunosa which are very fragrant in the early evening - I detect no scent right now!

I think none of us could agree on the scent of any flower....I mean agree down to the Nth degree. Scent/fragrance is really subjective to me....I am still growing out (and hopefully it will bloom within the month) that H. magnifica Christina sent me .... the one she says smells to her of a stable and to me it is the sweetest fragrance in the world. She sent it to me to try it for myself....and after 2 years I am stubornly going to test it!!! HAHAHA

(Zone 1)

LOL, Carol. Yep, like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, fragrance is in the nose of the beholder! I love DK Cashmere Mist perfume/cologne. I think it has a nice, sweet fragrance. My sister says it doesn't smell sweet to her at all, she thinks its musty. She has always loved Poison by Christion Dior, to her it smells like honey, yet to me it has a very strong, not so sweet fragrance!

I have H. magnifica that I received this past spring and I look forward to that one growing out and blooming too, but I sure hope it doesn't smell like a stable to me or it will be outta here real quick! LOL.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Lin, I agree with you on the Poisen perfume. To me it smell just like Raid bug spray. Years ago, when I was working in Macy's in the cosmetic dept., the vendors would hire girls to spray people coming in the front door. Quite a few of us always asked if the exterminater was in the building. LOL.
Everyone's sense of smell is so different, just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My DH thinks Sara Jessica Parker should not be in commercials for beauty. I don't agree with him. LOL

One last contribution from me for September... H. australis is in full bloom here at work, but I only took a photo of one umbel. Smells heavenly in my office!

Beautiful Christina! You always know its fall when australis and calycina start blooming. Must be nice to be in Australia right now...

Christina, just beautiful.

Thank you for your comments! If I remember to bring my camera to work again I'll take a photo of the whole plant...

Mine bloomed in the spring and now it is outside and has wrapped around my plant stand which is quite heave but I refuse to unwind it. It's in this collage I made anyone know what the name is?
