What is this?

(Zone 1)

Let the experiments begin! You all know I'm going to be watching ... it should be very interesting to see the outcome of everyones attempts. I know there will be lots of success, and if there are a few failures, we will all attend the funeral's.

... Just a thought ... If there are funeral's, we could send flowers!

^_^

Lin, I feel bad that you gave up your place on the list for me. Are you sure you wouldn't like for him to send them to you? I'm excited to grow them, but not at the cost of you not getting to...

(Zone 1)

Amy, I'm sure! I have a lot going on the next few months and I know I wouldn't have time to sow them. I'm going to be in and out of town with family stuff until after the holidays. LOL, I would rather wait for you good propagator's to grow them out, and then maybe I could do a trade with one of you for an already established plant. ^_^

I'm fighting an eye infection so I hope I haven't missed any typo's here ... trying to proof read and correct any mistakes but my vision is fuzzy!

You're so sweet, Lin! You know that if I can grow 'em, I'll share 'em! ^_^

I sure hope your eye infection gets better! I had pink eye once and was absolutely miserable. It was as if someone had poured sand in my eye, plus the fact that I couldn't see. Horrible! I hope you're better today!

(Zone 1)

Hi Rain,

The eye is better today. I went to the doc day before yesterday. They put something in my eye that said it made my eye "glow" bright yellow, LOL. She was looking for scratches or foreign debris in the eye but didn't find anything. She kept saying "Are you sure you took your contact lens out? It looks like there's a lens in there." I had taken my lens case and saline solution with me and sat in the waiting room and took it out because I knew they would want to examine the eye without the lens. I am past due for an eye exam so will be making an appointment soon to get them checked. My eye is still pretty red but feels fine and things are not a blur this morning. They told me not to wear my contact while using the drops. I have to have the lens in to drive so I think I am going to not use the drops until later today as I need to run some errands this morning. Which reminds me ... I better get up from this chair and get busy!

I'm glad you're better today! Don't forget to put your drops in later!

My husband got sheetrock dust in his eyes once and not knowing it, he put his contact lens in. It really messed his eye up, smashing the particles into his eye, and they could see the embedded debris in his eye. They offered to clean that out, or said he could use drops to help the eye shed the debris itself. He opted for the drops. Couldn't say I blamed him!

Yikes, ouch - sorry for your eye problem plantlady, and that RainGazer's hubby's had that eye injury! Good to hear both are better now.

Just want to let people know that I mailed out the envelopes this a.m. so hopefully everybody will receive them safe and sound next week. I hope I didn't screw up because I had so much to mail. There's a slight chance someone may get banana, coffee, or tobacco seeds lol, but I think I kept everything straight.

Just to let you know, not that I'm asking anyone to send it to me, the postage to the U.S. is 27 cents and a whole 33 cents to Italy, pretty affordable!

Thanks everyone who is trading, although it wasn't necessary. However, I am eager to get those new gessie seeds and get them started, lol! This is going to be so much fun!

Wow gessiegail! Usually it costs 90 cents from the U.S. With your Economy in so much trouble, you need to save every cent you can. I sure hope folks vote for the "right one" to get things changed, lol! That's all I'll say. Politics are out of bounds here.

Thanks so much for the seeds. I'm going to check out that Maruo website in Brazil. Maybe I should just go down there someday. It's not that far from here, but I'm sure there are no bargain airfares!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I always google Maruo from Brazil to get the address.............let me get it for you.........I love his seeds...............great germination..............

Thanks gessiegail. I was going to ask you last night but just Googled "maruo brazil" and it came right up. I spent some time there, but couldn't find any sort of price list or info about ordering. Do you just have to e-mail back and forth with him, if you're interested in anything he's offering? He seems to have a lot of interesting things, but I love comparing prices, lol! Part of the shopping addiction I think.

Hi there vanilla man,I can answer your question about mauro's seeds. The packages of seeds are 3 dollars apiece and you have to buy a minimum of 6 packages. And 3 dollars shipping I think.

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Thanks jannich, that helps!

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi There Vanillaman;

Woo Hoo ... The race is on! Bonnie is the first to receive her seeds and sow them ... who's next? I can't wait to see all the baby pictures!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Hooray, vanillaman. My seeds came today. Now, can someone tell me what kind of mix I sow them in. Do I use regular african violet mix, or should I add some vermiculite and perlite? Do I cover them with a dome? I just sowed some strep seeds that I received in the swap from cedarnest. I have them in the av mix, perlite and some vermiculite, and I covered the pot with a baggie. I wasn't sure, and hope they make it. I should have asked first. If I made a mistake with the streps, there is nothling I can do now. I just don't want to make another mistake. So, please help this old gal out. LOL

Williston, ND

Wytheville, VA

Haven't had seeds only this month, so it's no offspring. It is a cutting of something I've lost &/or forgotten. perhaps someone sent me something diffrent from ebay than what I expected. It happens. I was sent Tajar RogerW. as a gift, and when it bloomed, it was pink!
I have been all through strep-info.com & cant match it. However, some of the pictures are poor quality, while others are missing.

Williston, ND

Tar jar doesnt come true very often from cuttings, and it reverts rather easily,
best thing to do is find someone with a true blooming one and get a division
now several fantasys do come true from cutttings, spin art in my opinion does as does the fantastic fantasy, neils jammin, and neils wam bam

JIM

Wytheville, VA

Boy! There is so much that I dont know! So perhaps it WAS Tarjar & it reverted> Actually, that makes me feel better!

Wytheville, VA

wow! Is this Hototogisu? I bought it late winter '08! The starts sent are so tiny, it takes 6 months for them to bloom! I dont list a start unless it has a bloom.
Any opinions?

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i don't think that is hototogisu, that one has an unusual look ot it, not like any other flower.
mrsbonnie

Williston, ND

i have hototogishu blooming and thats not it,maybe a musuem of art that sported,
the markings are making me wonder

JIM

Wytheville, VA

Oh! Well! is that a possibilty? Does everything"sport"?
Certainly makes life interesting!
whatever it is, it is very pretty. Much prettier than the photo!
Maybe i'd better put a leaf down!

Williston, ND

Hi Vanilla man;
I planted my seed & the next day i noriced they had mold on them, so i turned them over as they were large enough to do that. i did not cover them with soil, should i have?
mrsbonnie

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Wow, I'm glad all you guys got your seeds/rhizomes. My suggestion is to start them in a very SANDY mix, something more like a cactus mix or even with added sand, because that is how both of them grow here "in situ". I wouldn't cover with them with soil, possibly a tiny bit of fine sand, but these plants hate a moisture retentive, or peaty mix. Misting would help or inside a plastic bag etc., but in that case, do not let them get too warm. Both these gesneriads want cool, sandy, low light conditions to do best!

Sorry to hear about the mold problem mrs bonnie. In your case I would definitely not cover them, but I'd also make sure your starting mix is sandy. They grow in almost pure sand, and definitely need something that has excellent drainage!

I hope yours arrive soon gessiegail. It usually takes a week.

I am in Canada at the moment, but return to Costa Rica next week! I'll check my mailbox as soon as I get back, lol!

I am excited and thanks for the tip on starting them.....................lucky you in Canada in the fall...............envy setting in..................
