mrsbonnie

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

No problem mrsbonnie! I should soon have seeds and little "scales" that I can mail out. If you want a puppy, you'd have to come and get it yourself, lol! There are 9 and if I take 2, that still leaves 7!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi vanillaman
Thanks for posting the pictures. That is amazing seeing them growing in the wild.Such a cute little plants.I have been following the Gesneriphiles site and it will be interesting to see what kind of plant it really is.Seems the pro's can't decide what your plant is..Please put me on your list for seeds!

I had men with machetes going though my land a few weeks ago.I had to walk the boundary line with the surveyor and all I could find was poison ivy and wild grapes.Wish I could find orchids and bromalades like you did.IMAO.

Hey,I would love your recipe for rice and beans..If you ever have time to d-mail it to me.All I can find here is the stuff in the box.And that's not to good.LOL.

Williston, ND

that is a neat plant,i have no idea what it is,but Id grow it if it ever becomes advailble

JIM

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

(Zone 1)

Still "lurking" and watching to see if you get an ID on that beauty!

Williston, ND

dont forget me bonnie when you get babies,Id love to grow that, its a beauty

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Ok, I'll put you all on Trade Tracker so I don't forget. I'll re-post when I get a batch of little rhizomes separated and dried off. I'll get your mailing addresses then, when they're ready to be mailed out.

Still no positive ID, but now I'm waiting to hear from Kew!

JIM

(Zone 1)

hmm ... I'd love to have someone sow the seeds and grow a nice big plant for me, LOL. Just kidding!

I don't have much patience anymore. ^_^ I hope those of you who do sow the seeds will keep a diary/journal with photo's and keep us all posted on the progress!

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Ok cedarnest, you're added to the list. By the way plantladylin, they're not seeds I'll be sending, but litle pieces of rhizomes, with the "scales" on them that will grow. They will be roughly the size of kernels of corn for comparison. Let me know if you'd like me to add you, lol!

vm

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks so much vm..really excited about trying them : )

(Zone 1)

LOL, Ok ... ya got me! Yep, add me to the list and I will give it a try! ^_^ How neat it would be with so many folks in different parts of the world growing plants that all came from your beautiful unidentified Gessie!

I know you live in a beautiful part of the world there in Costa Rica, with so many beautiful plants at your doorstep, and with all the restrictions of shipping live plant material, it would be hard to reciprocate with a plant, so I will gladly reimburse you the postage for sending the rhizomes!

Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness and willingness to share that beauty!

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

oh wow, now i'm so excited.can't wait. lol
mrsbonnie

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

LOL, nobody has to reimburse me the 50 cents it costs to mail the envelope from here!

(Zone 1)

VM ... all those 50 cents add up to dollars!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am just dying of envy.......................I love to grow from seed, rhizomes, scales, etc................just in case you have enough to share..............also I would be happy to send you something in return...........I grow a lot from seed..........species and hybrids both..........this may be the most exciting thing that has happened on our little av forum since I joined. (LOL)

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

I'm still getting the little tubers ready for mailing out gessiegail, but I'll add you to the list. I'm also including puppies in the package and making sure of "overnight delivery", lol! No trade is necessary, but if you do happen to have a few Gesneriad seeds lying around, I'd be glad to take them off your hands. Named or unnamed, it doesn't matter. I'm just trying to start up or add to my small collection.

vm

(Zone 1)

Oooh, I want a puppy! Are there any left? I don't have any seeds for trade but I want a puppy! Please, Please? ^_^

.... someday my DH and I will have a canine in the family again, once some of the old kitties are gone to heaven.

vanillaman, I have just read this entire thread and I am utterly fascinated by it! Can't decide if this is better or the baby birds in your Maxillaria! LOL I love this plant! If, after you've filled all the other requests, you have any rhizomes left I would dearly love to grow them!

What a pleasure it must be to live where a simple walk reveals such wonders! I only wish I could find such interesting things in my backyard (Crabgrass, anyone? :oP). Thank you very much for posting all the pictures and information!

(Zone 1)

VM ... you can put RainGazer/ Amy's name down in place of mine! I am so lazy and so "older" and so blonde, I'd probably lose them anyway! I can just wait for one of my buddies here to grow them out and send me one, LOL. I know somebody would do it! Such a great bunch here on this forum!

Seriously, add Rain to your list and maybe next year at this time there will be so many babies of the vmgessienoid circulating that someone can send me a plant, already rooted!

Ok now ... where's the talk about the baby birds in a Maxillaria (whatever that is!%@!) ^_^ I gotta go find that. Are there pictures? Oh, I love birds!

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

These comments are all so funny - thanks for the compliments too! I will add you to the list, RainGazer, and remove you plantlady. By the way, that "baby birds" issue was posted on both the Birdwatchers Forum (or whatever it's called) as well as on the Orchid Forum, but it was way back in April I think. I actually postponed my move because a native Robin (the national bird of C.R.) had built a nest in a hanging orchid (Maxillaria) in front of the living room window. By the time I discovered it, there were already eggs in it. So long story short, I let them hatch and fledge, then I moved. The plant is here and has not seemed to suffer too much from having a nest in it, lol! I think all the fertilizer actually helped it!

By the way, don't get the wrong idea about all the beautiful things I see on my walks. We have weeds here too, even some of the same ones as you guys have. Regarding this particular plant, I have now found several more very large colonies of it, so there will be no shortage of rhizomes to go around to everyone. The actual ID is still up in the air however, but most of the experts are saying a variety or subspecies of Achimenes candida.

It's ok that you're so "blonde" plantlady, lol! You could always go green! I have a Spanish friend here, who is "orange"! I think there are more bird pics on the Bird Forum. I'm attracting all sorts of neat ones here, and have 7 hummingbird feeders hanging. They even fly through the house and sometimes get trapped. One day I had to catch 3 of them and put them outside! You wouldn't believe all the sugar I'm going through - good thing it's cheap here!

vm

(Zone 1)

LOL, VM ... you fit right in here with your sense of humor! I thought about dyeing my hair red last year. I always wanted to be a red head. Oh, and I did have orange hair once, many years ago ... not on purpose though! ^_^ I have been coloring my own hair since I was 16 years old and one time for some reason the particular shade of blonde I used turned my hair orange, probably had something to do with changing brands that I normally used, I really don't remember. I just remember that it was hideous! ... not pumpkin orange, or carrot orange ... but it was orange! It did not stay that way for long!

... and speaking of hair color, I need to get rid of my gray ... soon! When my DH notices the gray then I know I'm in need of a dye job!

Ok, I'm off to see if I can find the forum back in April when you posted about birds nesting in the orchid! I have had birds (wrens) nest in hanging baskets over the years. Doesn't bother me one bit. Now I don't know if I'd like them nesting in an orchid basket! I only have about a dozen orchids and they have been hanging out in a tree in the backyard since spring. I've found so many missing from the baskets ... some I found on the ground below the tree and the spagnum moss all picked out of the baskets. (Some are in plain moss, others in the bark.) I swear the birds or squirrels are using the moss for their nesting material. I moved most of them the other day to another tree right up next to the pool enclosure. I can keep a closer eye on them in that tree. I even found a couple of orchids actually missing ... no sign of them anywhere on the ground or in other baskets. I thought maybe the squirrels or birds were wanting to decorate their homes with my orchids. Someone told me that a lot of orchids are edible so maybe they are eating them! Arrrgh! It's bad enough when I find one of the cats grazing on my plants like she thinks it's her own private salad bar ... now the squirrels and birds are gonna eat my orchids?!&% I don't think so! I have quite a few birdfeeders and suet feeders in the yard and I not only put out seed and suet but fruit and berries for the critters too! They don't need my orchids!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

vanillaman,
I'm sorta new to this forum, so I don't like to ask for anything. But, if during your walks, if you come across any more rhizomes of the NOID, could you please add me to the end of the list. I can wait until you take care of all the 'regular folks' first. I'm addicted to hoya, but now have a new craving for gessies. I've had african violets, gloxinia and epicia in the past, and I'm just getting started again. I don't post too often as I've been busy reading all the old posts. I have to learn what all these plants are and how to take care of them.
Thanks
Eileen

Good morning vanillaman,
I have some extra gessie seeds I can send you.I looked for you addy in the address exchange but can't find it.Could you d-mail it to me please and I'll pop the seeds in the mail for you.Thank Jan

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Ok people, the goods are ready to mail out! Please realize that I am sending rhizome "scales", that are roughly the size of an unpopped popcorn seed or a big grain of rice, for lack of a better description. I have lots so should be able to send everyone at least 10. The scale should grow quickly into a plant, unless you kill it first, lol! I still don't have a positive ID, but the closest to date is that it is a pink variation of Achimenes candida or possibly a naturally occurring hybrid.

I would like to get them mailed out in the next couple of days, when I make the trek down to town to the Post Office. However, I need the following people's mailing addresses:

RainGazer
imadigger
cedarnest
jannich
bigoldbuck701

Please send it to me in a D-mail. I have not subscribed to Address Exchange so if anyone has their address there, I cannot get it. I already have yours mrsbonnie and I'm glad to be able to send you something now!

That's about it. In the next little while, I should have a bunch more gessie seeds or scales and will add them to my Have List. For sure I will have Kohleria spicata and Diastema racemiferum. Those 2 are all over the place and in full bloom right now.

You are welcome mrsbonnie! You should receive them sometime next week. It takes about a week for me to receive seeds from the U.S.

(Zone 1)

There are going to be a lot of "Happy Gardeners" on this forum next week! I can see em' all doing a little ~ ~ * * happy dance * * ~ ~ when they get their mail!

It will be fun to watch this forum and hear what y'all who are sowing those "scales" have to report! Good luck everyone ... I know we will be seeing photo's of that beautiful plant from a bunch of you real soon! I hope someone will consider beginning a thread just for Vanillaman's unidentified Gessie's offspring and everyone can post updates and pictures!

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

LOL plantlady, you're so funny! This Forum is so friendly, unlike some Bulldogs on other Forums. Not sure if they're wearing lipstick or not, but there's no need for rudeness or insults, in my opinion!

Thanks for the laugh Blondie!

I edited this because I inappropriately had named another Forum. I should not have done that! It's bad enough just being grumpy lol - sorry!

Vanillaman, you are very welcome! I think this world needs lots more smiles ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ so if I can ever offer one or two, I am glad to help!

This forum is my favorite one in this garden! We are like family here! So ... WELCOME to the family!

I learn a lot from a couple of other forums but this one I call "home". Great group of ladies and gents (who pop in once in awhile) and we all seem to have a lot of fun. I have noticed on a couple of other forums where there seem to be personality conflicts, and insults and rudeness. In my opinion, life is just too short for negativity! Sometimes I think folks just get so caught up in "stuff" that they forget what is important. So much hatred and unrest going on in the world and they have to argue about such trivial things. I try to be as happy as possible ... I do have my moments and get down sometimes but usually I can give myself a good talking to and change my attitude quickly! LOL.

Ok, I need to get off this computer and get some things done around here! Hope everyone has a great afternoon!

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Thanks Jan! Don't worry gessiegail, you don't have to "go to time out" lol! I can wait. I'm just packing up the little tuber scales now. Went and got some more fresh ones today, so there really are a lot now!

(Zone 1)

It's going to be a lot of fun watching everyone's progress with these! I sure hope some of you will keep us updated with pictures after you have planted the scales.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is going to be a fun project.........and the seeds that we send we need pictures of also!

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

That's true, fair is fair! I will either post plant pics or else little tombstones with RIP written on them, lol!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am sending you some 'weird' seeds from Maruo from Brazil. I love them all!!!!!!!!!
