Well as you know, I'm new at this, but to me, they sort of look like my Red Rosie but without the white bits. She is a Red Star sex linked I think. At least that is what others told me. That is a cross with an RIR, so it would make sense that she looks kind of similar.
To me, the only one that looks roo-ish is #4, because of the longer tail feathers sticking out, but I can't see the tails on #2 and #3. The tail on #1 looks like Rosie's but darker. The comb on #3 looks particularly small and not roo-like.
But like I say, I'm new to this and am probably all messed up. After all, I'm only Canadian. :-)
CHICKEN CHAT # 4 - For all the Chicken Heads
all but one has the longer tail feather and they are greenish. lol 4 was the one I thought a hen. the comb is smaller and i am sooooooooooooo confused.
OH! LOL!!! Well I say the one without the longer tail feathers might be your hen.
one of my new hampshire hens has a comb as big as a roo
my girl that has a big comb is a mutt. dont know her breed.
OK, how long have you had these? they look like they don't feel well, or just generally unyhappy?
#3 is a roo, looking at the feathers at the front of his wings, they have pointy ends.
now, who told you these are RIRs? why do they have black feet? don't RIRs have yellow feet? maybe i shoul dgo take a better look at Cheddars legs...
Cat has rpoven that tail feathers are not a good way to sex RIRs or Welsummers lol
I have had them 2 weeks today, they thought I was gonna give them a treat, do they look sick? Yea some of these have yellow feet and some are blackish. I will do a better inspection in a bit.
RIR are famous for their yellow legs. And you really cannot trust those first sickle feathers! Wait till after the juvenile molt. Pecky had two beautiful sickle feathers--I have photographic evidence--and they fell out. Then Pecky chose a pullet life-style. I currently have a BA cross with 2 beautiful sickle feathers--but every other indication of pulletness. I am going to wait this one out.
well in the morning I will be watching the nests better, to see who is up there laying. Then I can tell ya for sure.
Back to the chicken classroom for me! LOL!
i think they need a pick me up, try some garlic and ACV... they are nice looking other than that, and like i said, i can only see #3 well enough to say he is a roo. would be nice if you got THREE pullets, didn't you ask the CF for more pullets?
Hey y'all.. sorry to be absent...I have a couple issues going on, I need to deal with..I'm readin' just not much time to post.. I should have been in bed 2 hrs ago.. I gotta be up in 4...Hugggs girls..
Well, Dusty I guess Josh and I don't get hugs! Really though all kidding aside. If you all want this to be an all girl thread it's no big deal. God knows I can hardly keep up with the other threads I'm involved in.
George
(((((George)))))....You know me better than that...or should by now...
heavens no George, we want you guys here.
QUESTION...
I am going to buy bulk (100+) cornish x for fall growth and late fall/early winter processing.
With that said.. so is everyone else.. the price is right BUT:
Who can pass up a bargin... I know what it takes to raise the cornish.. I know how to care for them.. but there is a sale.. shhhh don't tell tf.. she can't handle sale.. (200@$36.) .18 cents apiece for mixed male fryers... cornish take 6-8 weeks to finish, how long does it take for mixed fryers (non-cornish) to finish?
holy cow, where is that sale?... wait, mixed fryers can take MONTHS... ask them what breeds are included...
200 will wear you out!
i like the sound of the Commonwealth Chicken Cheering Club but i dont know how much longer i can be in it
right now there is a lot of arguing and debating about becoming a republic and if there is a vote (which there probably will be in the next year or two) we will most likely leave the commonwealth which our current prime minister is very pro for so we will probably in the next 3 years or so have a president (oh the shame lol only joking)
oh yeh i got 7 green eggs in the post today and they went straight in the bator so i guess we wont have the same hatch date commander moxon
You may be a bit behind my eggs, Commander Josh, but no worries, the Eggsplorer II is at your service. Actually, I got an egg from one of my bantams yesterday - either a black wyandotte bantie or an OEG. I stuck it in the bator. Maybe we can have a same hatch day for that one!
Sorry to hear about the possible leaving of the commonwealth and the shame of having a president. Gulp. We'll need another name for our chicken cheering club then.
so were do u live a canadian living in america or a canadian living in whats the word i am looking for........CANADA
I am a Canadian living in America. I lived in Canada for 33 years, and then I moved to Iowa (not to be confused with Ohio, which often happens, even here). I have lived here in Iowa for 6 years now. But I am on a green card and I have dual Canada-UK citizenship, so I am not a US citizen.
i am dual australia- UK citizenship stupid dad being a pommy LOL
but it dose have its useful perpusses
Yes, because it means you can live and work anywhere in the European Union, which is a nice option to have. :-)
Oh Claire, I only mix Iowa with Idaho.. never Ohio
and tf.. do you REALLY want to know???
Has anyone ever dealt with lazy 54 farm? I am looking around and shopping for my cornish and came across their website. Now while they don't have anything I want there right now.. I really like their website. Very nice photos.
http://lazy54farm.com/index.htm
Standard disclaimer.. I have no connection to lazy 54 farms.. I just liked the website and wanted to share with my chickenhead friends.
NO, I ODN"T WANT TO KNOW. but i have a freind who might [evil laugh]
fran, i love those talking geese. but lazy54 is in OR, so considering your loCALE, have you looked at Meyer or Cackle or Healthychicks? i think they are closer. with cold weather approaching again, you want to get your chicks quick... i know Meyer has several varieites of Cornish, Cornish Cross and Cornish Rock...
also, this is the time of year when you can pick up juvenille birds from hatcheries and breeding farms for very little. PICK UP being the key word... as long as you have no preference in breed, etc...
see what i mean, so inexpensive [joking] i am drooling here...
http://www.meyerhatchery.com/get_list_124.htm
well, since nothing is on SALE at meyer, here is the list of OHIO hatcheries:

tf
RUN tf.. someone not so nice is chasing you.... lol
We had planned all year to get a bunch of cornish cross in late summer/early fall to avoid the heat and excessive smell.
What I didn't plan on was everyone else being as smart as me.. a lot of cornish are booked up and already busy for the season.. especially the males.. the females are a little more available but I really don't need that may tiny cornish meals.
So right now I am looking at MtHatchery in Oct, which will put me into December, they are in Ohio. or there is one in PA that has cockrels now and a reasonable price..
I am not really after anymore layers or cute.. I just needed the cornish.. food, not friends.
But that other sale.. 200 for $36.. really makes me think I could raise them all winter in the stinkin garage for that price. NAHHHH, the deal was cornish.. I should stick to my plan... RIGHT CF?
where are you getting 200 for 36 bucks?
Here is the PLAN, FRAN...
http://www.mthealthy.com/product/CR-SR
You pay more per chick, but get more meat per money spent on chicks and feed. 200 "fryers" of the Hatcheries choice will NOT get along in a small pen while fattening up like the Cornish Rock will. 100 Cornish at .97 is what you need.
Avoid the sale gimmich [you too luvstogarden2000].
Stick to the plan...

Oh for heavens sakes, I have no room for another bird right now, was just curious. We do love cornish hens for the rotisserie. My hubby would clean the whole house if I made them every night.
tia, these are not little cornish.. they are the cornish x.. and CF, thats what I kept thinking.. thanks for keeping me on track... what a good fairy you are
