CHICKEN CHAT # 4 - For all the Chicken Heads

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh gosh Tf hope he feels better soon.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

I wish I lived closer to y'all! I'd love to go to the poultry assoc. meet. We live in the smallest state in the Union and most people around here won't even drive to the other end of the state (48 miles) because it's too far to travel! lol!
But at least our state bird is the RIR, so I guess we can't be too strange!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

TF, hope he's better soon.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hope the patient is on the mend now, TF. Keep us updated. Flight crew has been working hard to keep hatch on schedule and all is well!

Sandy - you are always welcome to join us if you want a road trip! Did you know that there is a kind of chicken called the "Iowa Blue"? I don't have one but I would like to find one because they are interesting looking birds.

Does anybody on here have an Iowa Blue?
Claire

sandy we stayed in Delaware for a few months or was it Maryland ? lol you just never new which state we were in LOL they are small . You drive 2 miles and then your in a new state !! agh. LOL
Tf hope son is doing better and dr is nicer to you this time or is it a different dr ?
take care
sue

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

I'm ten minutes from CT and 50 from MA!
Claire, sandhill preservation sells them: http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/chickens.html
but they are sold out for 2008

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I would love to try some Sandhill birds but they only sell in straight run and in multiples of 25....

Maybe some folks would like to share an order with me next year?!

that kind of behavior is rewarded with many MANY chicks

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

TF.. I was the first to respond to her...but until I know she has shelter and some type of coop/tractor to safely house them, I feel strange offering sources...Besides which, she is 4 hours north of Dayton, and I doubt they would drive another 45 mins south of Dayton to get them, and he will not ship them...They are on Craigslist, and I am sure she can look them up or find breeders more local to her or go to the fall poultry sale in Lancaster, OH, and likely find them alot cheaper...

I finally got a response from the Sumatran & Langshan breeder tonight... all are Marek's vaccinated, he will take payments on the young adult Sumatrans, and he has 18 S/R Langshan chicks at $5 each, waiting on age info back in email...
Taynor Sue and I are going to get all of the Langshan pullets and maybe 2 cockerels out of the 18 if the age is good... so no clue how many of them we will wind up with...She also wants Buckeyes, and we are looking for 8-10 pullets...No Roo till spring on those...That would be far too many Roos in the brooder space for now until we can divide the yard and/or she gets her own set up done...Those Langshans are Monstrously huge and I'm sure would decimate a smaller Roo...although they are supposed to be very gentle birds...That is one of the things that drew me toward them...If I am happy with the performance of the Sumatrans and Langshans, I will cancel my idea of getting the Dominiques (Domineckers)...As large as the brooder house is, and as large as the doorway to the *Yard* is, I can divide it in half and seperate my 2 breeds to keep them pure strain for breeding purposes...Once Farmer D has his cwap out of the front left half of the brooder, I can revamp that area for chicks, and again, divide that in 1/2 to seperate the breeds...The front right corner will be my feed storage etc...

We found lots of scrap lumber at Taynors yesterday that we can use, and even some left over Tin roofing to cover part of the pen...I have scrounged chicken wire to cover the rest of it to protect the birds from the barn cats, and predator birds etc...That is my main concern...those cats are really ready to kill any birds...Hopefully the new Langshan Roos will be able to handle a good threat to them...But not till they are grown...

Sue and I are on a very tight shoestring budget, and maybe only one shoes worth, so we have to be very careful what and how we do it...

are you sure sandhill only does numbers of 25 ? i was under the impression you could do 5 . ? they do have a limit on how many you can order like up to 25 or was i mistaken and kinda slooooowwww again.
You get a line , i get a pole babe. You get a line an i get a pole babe. We'll go fishin in a chicken hole LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Get a pole...there I was thinking you were about to start doin' a strip tease!! LOL!!! I was thinking "Gee, that's one way to get some extra money but I don't think it's too good an idea!!" ROTFL!!!

You're right about Sandhill - minimum 25 order. Doesn't have to be 25 of the same kind. Bottom line is I still can't get 25...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

i think its pet chickens that the min is 5
OMG there Claire, a pole. They going chicken fishing.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

It's my Canadian mind...always in the gutter....when it's not on the chicken shuttle.

Dang good thing I'm not really on a shuttle. I'm scared witless of flying. I have to take meds to get me calmed down enough to get on a plane, and even then I tremble the whole trip. I'm such a chicken!!

HUGGGGS To alll...and I broke my budget on a case of Depends to survive this thread the past couple of days...You are all an inspiration, a pleasure to be around, and a JOY in this old Army Nurses life...May our Creator Bless you all, and bring Nothing but Pullets from the evil CF that sneaks in the dark, and lurks in Texas....LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

DUSTY>>>Report on Rosie babies thread! Includes top 5 learnings, Ma'am.

Getting up at 0300 hrs is ludicrous, if I may say so, Ma'am. Recommend changing life schedule in order to help bring sanity to life.

And it is equally delightful to you have sharing our silliness, Ma'am.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

mornin

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Morning Dusty. Last chick hatched this morning and is under the heat lamp. Happy to be finished with this for now!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Are you for certain it is over for now. And how many were there that hatched.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'm about 99% certain. There is one more egg from that group but I can't see movement in it and it has some liquid in the air cell so I think it's a dud.

Had a total of 9 hatch. 7 are black with white on either their head, belly, or wings. Some are almost totally black. 2 are lighter colored and 1 has brown on its head.

I am just thrilled to pieces with them. I can't wait to see how they develop. I hope they are not all roos.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

he he he, I am sure you can find good home for them if they are.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Good Morning Ladies!
