Tradelist Suggestion

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I am sorry if this is not the right place to post this, but I would love it if when viewing my own tradelist I could have an option to view it externally. Similar to how you can view journal entries externally. I have 95 entries and at the moment only 7 active and it would be nice to see it with only the active entries when I need to edit something. So I don't have to scroll through 88 inactive ones.
Thank You
Meredith

I don't have a tradelist so I'm not positive this would work, but if you click on your username and scroll down to the section that says "actions" (just plain "actions", not "your actions"), you'll see links that say "send Meredith79 a dmail", "view Meredith79's journal", etc I suspect there'll be a link to your tradelist there, and any of the links in that section take you to the page as if you were someone else.

Ah ha, thank you ecrane that did work. I thought I had viewed it that way before without having to log out but I couldn't remember how. I still think it would make editing the tradelist easier if you could view it that way as yourself, but at least I can check it that way too. : )

My trading suggestion is that traders list what they have for trade, and what they are looking to trade for (or vice versa).

I have to say I hate those trading lists. They're just too long and time consuming to page through! I've had people wanting to trade with me and direct me to their trade lists that are many pages long, and often they're not legitimate trading items- for example, a plant they just bought that they have 1 of.

I may be an old curmudgeon (yeah, I admit it! lol) but when I read, "check out my trade list" I just cringe...

OK, I just went a checked out a few traders on that forum. The ones I looked at seem to have under 30 items. Maybe the word is already out.... But the person who wanted to trade had over 200 plants on her list.

....the old Poop!

I think those people who list tons of plants and ones that they just bought are confused by the link in PF entries that says "I have this plant". I think they don't realize that puts the plant in their tradelist; I think they may interpret it as being a way to keep track of plants they have in their garden.

That could be!

Yes, I only keep the ones I can actually trade right now active. The rest I keep inactive until they are available, it makes it much easier for people to see what I have to trade. I have noticed a lot of peoples listings will say not available and I wonder why they don't just make it inactive? It would make it much easier on people trying to initiate a trade. It is a pain when everything you ask for on a tradelist, comes back with an answer of sorry I don't have that. Then why is it on your tradelist? I understand occasionally you will run out and didn't have a chance to take it off but 200 unavailables for others to scroll through is a bit much!!

Thanks Meredith, glad to know I'm not the only one that feels that way!

Thanks, all, for these helpful tips. I'm a newbie the DG and wan't aware of the inactive option. So much to learn and so little time! Thanks again.

Welcome, nbgard I'm glad what we discussed here has been helpful for you. : )
For someone new here, the post where Ecrane said he thinks people are confused by the 'I have this plant' link on plantfiles is especially helpful. If I remember correctly, when I was new here, it took me a little time playing with that before I figured out it was for trading and not just to make a list of what I had. lol

Thanks for the Welcome Meredith 79. I know that I did add some of my plants to my list that way. It's good to have the concept cleared up. Maybe someday I'll be able to spend enough time to understand tagging and journaling!

The journal is a great way to keep track of the plants you have. You should check it out. I believe you need to go in to your default journal and at least create one category first. Then you can click a link on any plantfiles page where it says add to my journal. It will automatically (in most cases) add a link to the plantfiles page for the plant. To make it super simple you could just do a category of 'All Plants' then just add them all to that. I love the journal feature, it is how I came to subscribe to DG, I had been using the journal feature since the day I signed up! : )

Sounds cool, Meredith! I'll definitely look into doing that soon.
