Our mini heat wave still going on in Southern BC. High is 30C here today. Cooler temps forecast by the end of the week. Beginnings of our Fall season I suppose...right on schedule. Wasn't that Moon a beauty last night? :D
What's Happening in YOUR neighborhood today pt 8
ooops, fell asleep before the moon came out..
Just looking for some suggestions from you folks in Ontario..I have a friend (single) that wants to visit to view the fall colours, perhaps in October and is looking for an all inclusive escorted tour...any suggestions? I thought one of you may know of a tour group there to recommend before I start helping her to book something. I think she would like to visit the Niagara region, but not to fussy..thanks
Know there are many tour pkgs. that originate in Midland/Orillia area but as far as I know they go north....
That would actually be fine as I know shes not fussy, just wants to see the fall colours and visit Ontario as shes never been before

Oh by the way...the moon here last nite was just spectacular...it actually took up the whole horizon...as I was driving down the road......felt like I was going to drive into it....lol
ViolaAnn - you are a sweetheart :-)
Thanks for the links re: Handbells. No, our church doesn't have 'em. My thought was that if we could find someone that could teach us, that they may know of a "lending library" that had some used ones we could use for practice & Sundays. I'll check out the 2 links you sent.
If we could do Handbells, I'll BET we could increase the church membership from 97 to......... Anyway, enough of that - don't want to get "zapped" for speaking about religion lol
We got a telescope the other day, and tested it out in the daytime, looking @ fir trees & pinecones LOL Quite a different perspective on trees!! Talking about flora - There's a DG 'September pix' thread I gotta get some pics on, cuz the fall flower garden is sooooooooo different from the spring & summer one - quite startling when the 're-birth' happens again!! :-)
- Susan -
Sydney, will d-mail later with regards to your friend visiting Ontario..only problem I can see with her visit is we've had the strangest weather this year so when the traditional changing of color occurs who knows..usually Thanksgiving weekend is one of the best weekends, this year, who knows??? hmmm....driving in from the north to work, I'm seeing changes already, few trees here, few there..but the impact of color I'm expecting between mid-Oct. to late Oct. do you know when she is trying to visit??
Betty...shes very flexible and I had told her that mid to late Oct is probably the best time to visit for the colours
Was driving home from class tonight and the moon is still just AMAZING!! :-)
Fall colours here in Northern Ont are becoming more and more prevalent. Best time for "LEAF PEEPERS' in this area is the end of Sept into early Oct.. We also have a tour bus company here that has Leaf Peepin trips .. usually from TBay into Minnesota and Wisconsin and Michigan and then back along the north shore of Lake Superior.
Hope your friend has a great time Sydney ..
Off to bed with me .. between working and classes I should be NUMB when I go to the dental hygensit in the morning !!!
~M~
WEll Carol .. don't know too too much with regards to that flower .. but .. it's purdy :-)
We had an amazing day here re weather .. and I took some pics of the one perennial garden that is just too nice to have to watch GO !!
In this particular garden is a flower I have nary a CLUE about .. all I know is .. it's a LATE bloomer AND .. beautiful ..
Am going to put up 3 pics .. hope that's OK .. I feel like the 'grim reaper' sometimes as this garden is the only one left to take down, so, I have 2 wheelbarrows waiting to 'do their job' :-(
First pic is the 'mystery' flower ..
~M~
Your gardens are lovely Marilyn. Who knows, you may be in for an Indian Summer yet, you just never know. That flower in the first photo looks like Liatris (Gayfeather).
Thanks Don .. :-) I was given the plant .. but never told about it .. I have watched it grow all season .. almost thought it was a 'DUD' until .. POOF .. last week it started blooming .. the colour has blended well with this garden ..
Our weather here in Thunder Bay is 'supposedly' going into an "Indian Summer" typa mode starting tomorrow with a projected high temp of .. are ya ready .. 25C !!! WOOO HOOOO !!!
Thanks again :-)
~M~
Marilyn can you post a close up of the flower?
cloudy cool day here - quite a change after our high 20s the past few days.
But a good dy for the job of clearing our a compost bin. Somewhat awkward position but i got it done and goat about 4 wheelbarrows of nice compost out of the bottom.
One more to go and it will be even more awkward! But I have let them sit for about 4 years now - I dont bother to turn them or do the appropriate mix just dump things in and let them sit - so it is time.
Ive had an extra two dogs with me since Monday Carter and Katy will be flying to Toronto tomorrow with their owner, one of our foster moms who is, sadly for us, returning to Toronto to live.
I told her I hope she hates it and comes back to Calgary!
Harley, our new foster is coming tomorrow morning for the weekend. He was neutered on Wed. - I expect it will be a bit difficult to keep him somewhat quite - he is quite an energetic 2 yr old.
Heres Carter and Katy.
OHMIGOSH Carol .. your 2 fur guests are absolutely precious .. Shelties have faces that can just melt ya :-) I sure do hope they have a very safe trip east .. I always worry about dogs becoming airborne.
My cousin breeds and shows Shelties here in TBay at 'Dalgarnoch Kennels' .. web address ....
http://my.tbaytel.net/~dalgar@tbaytel.net/dalgarnoch_site/index.html
BJ has gorgeous dogs ..
Hope Harley isn't too BOUNCEY for you :-)
As for my 'mystery flower' .. I'll try and get a closer pic tomorrow .. I did lookup 'Liatris' but .. the pics are showing a plant that is too 'POOFY' ....
Am on with VCARS tomorrow .. I had best get my kit bag ready ..
Take care all :-)
~M~
Marilynne that first plant sure looks to be a Obedient Plant, False Dragonhead to me: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/search.php?q=Obedient+&Search=Search+PlantFiles (it may be one of the Physostegia virginiana which can be somewhat aggressive).
MarrilynneS Lilypon is right. My obedient plants are blooming too. and that is definitly what it is. Did you know that you can reposition the petals of these flowers? Try it - that is why they are called obedient plants.
Sandra
Well Lillypon and Sandra .. I do think you're correct in your ident of the plant ..
I will have to try re positioning the flowers (with care) today .. this plant attracts bees !! I do think our Hummies have gone .. they seemed to have liked it as well.
TGIF .. everyone have a splendiferous weekend !!
~M~
Sorry Marilynne, I stand corrected. Now that I see the Obediant Plant, I think the other folks are correct. Now I have learned the name of another plant too. :)
Good morning,
Drove from Ottawa to Kawagama Lake near Dorset and back over the last two days and the leaf colour in that part of Ontario is just beginning with bits of red and yellow here and there. Probably will be at its best in about 2-3 weeks.
Now we have SSIL, DD#2 and DGD with us. DH will head out on a trip to China tomorrow and DSIL will head back to Vancouver, leaving the other two with me for the rest of the week. Should be fun.
Gotta get out into the garden and check it out. They were predicting a frost for early Friday morning, but I think they narrowly avoided it. As long as the trees still have leaves, my garden will likely weather a slight frost with no damage. But I'm going to have to harvest my basil pretty soon or it will be gone.
Have a great day.
Ann
What is it I have heard said .. something like '..a flower by any other name .. " :-) whatever the name of that flower is, is OK by me .. all I know is that it is totally lovely !!
Ann .. sure seems as though you have full house .. but .. having Leila with you must be so wonderful .. not to mention your daughter :-)
Went to do some MINOR indoor repairs today .. here .. my SON has all the tools I need !!!! Called and he is away for a bit doing some computer work for CPR .. sheesh .. I'm always last to know :-(
Tomorrow I HAVE got to plant the NEW perennials I rec'd from a friend .. I'll just be sticking them in somewhere so they have a home til spring .. I have 'PIGS SQUEAK" Creeping Phlox .. AND .. 3 more mystery plants :-)
Am being kinda careful out on the property as a 'BOAR' has gotten away from its owner and is now a 'WILD BOAR' .. has been spotted here and there .. seems the creature is moving quite quickly .. kinda think I'd about have a FIT were I to see one running towards me !!!
Stuff like this seems to happen when DH is away :-(
I best get a move on ..
Take care
~M~
The Boar is in 'Boar Heaven' .. seems he tried to attack someones dog, and, the owner dispatched him.
Got the perennials planted .. that Pig's Squeak' is awfully big even now ..
Weather has been wonderful over the weekend .. thought we had a killing frost this morning .. but .. it was just a touch ..
Guess tomorrow (Monday) is the first day of Autumn .. sheesh .. kinda makes me wonder where the days have gone.
Hope everyone has a great upcoming week.
~M~
WHOA !! Where can we vote for a 36 hour day .. ?? Maybe it'll be on the ballot in October !!
We are having just amazing weather here in Northern Ontario .. MAY get rain today, but, I will NOT hold my breath on that ..
Have been asked to mentor a 2nd year Lakehead University nursing student .. of course, I said yes .. the time commitment isn't too too bad .. and.. thankfully some of it can be done via email and chit chats on the phone. Josh seems like a nice young man is very keen. I am only going to mentor him til December.
I'm off and runnin !!
Enjoy your day :-)
~M~
Coming back in the morning to read past threads..been busy/busy..not sure why I thought putting tile behind kitchen cupboards would be quick and easy..but am please with what I've done so far...tomorrow night I teach and Thurs. night it's 'grout' night..sounds exciting doesn't it...
Going to gab/gab with you all in the a.m. - 4:45 am comes early, accidents all over, long ride home so off to bed I go..
Do hope you are all well and you enjoyed the day...
Rest well my friends..
Hope the ride in is a good one for you Betty .. as for the tile .. I am guessing it's ceramic ? Mine just comes to below my cupboards .. gotta hand it to ya .. there was NOWAY I was taking my cupboards down as I KNOW they'd never have gone back up the same way ..
Making applesauce here today .. our apple trees are bountious and beautiful this year .. will likely make and freeze some pies as well .. have already made 3 apple pies that went quickly.
DH is already asking about Thanksgiving .. the menu .. akkkkkkkkkkkk .. and here TG is my favourite holiday .. and I forgot all about it !!!
Enjoy your day ..
~M~
I so did not want to come to work this morning, would have given anything for a day off..odd, because when I have a day off all I do is work...
Applesauce, yummmy..can't wait until Oct. 4th.. big Meaford Applefest/Craft show, will purchase all my apples and might follow suit "M" and make some..will certainly make apple pies for Thanksgiving...
Thought I'd wait until Fri. aft. "M" to grout..next is about 3' over the surround tub, should have been done ages ago, was going to hire a tileman but guess what...I'll have more craft spending money because I'll do it myself...lol
Are you all having this marvellous fall weather we're having here..say it will last until Monday and then rain for better part of the week...so best enjoy while we can....
Did a walkaround in the garden this morning, still some flowers opening and showing their beauty but it's dwindling down...Have any of you had frost?
Time to start working on 'make & take' 1 day workshop projects...got my new long neck commercial scroll saw last night so ready to roll...
Not sure if any of you know, last year with a few DG friends I did an on-line workshop - Victorian Santa sleighs..what a hoot..so I was asked to do yet another... so far I've 24 participants...making the kits, got to get them out asap...we're doing a Victorian Santa dressed in velvet...been pouring the santa heads and painting them here at work, some have ordered additional kits/heads etc. so keeping me out of mischief...need about another 60 or 70 kits for some workshops so now I really get busy..need to organize my hours as to best take advantage of them..lol...
Enjoy your day, have missed you all...
What a gorgeous fall day...wouldn't you know it, sunshine all week, near perfection and weekend on it's way and forcasting rain...oh well, better get that 'to do' list out for inside work..
What can I say but "WOW" !! Another gorgeous fall day here .. sunny with cloudy periods, but the clouds are few and far between ...
Did a bit more gardening, but have mainly just walked the property with Lilly enjoying the changing colours .. so many squirrels (varmints that they are) busy stashing pine cones and peanuts .. the Blue Jays are FURIOUS with them and are squwaking like mad. Have a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers, gosh are they a size, kinda remind me of a 'flying torpedo' !! And the noise they make almost puts you on the shores of the ZAMBEZI River as it flows towards the Indian Ocean .. LOL .. very 'tropical' sounding ..
I sure hope the forecast is incorrect for the weekend Betty .. however .. amateur meteoroligst that I am (must be a Canadian) it looks as though there is a LOT of rain in the mid section of the USA and it's heading due North and east .. we're to get rain this weekend as well .. but .. I have heard that time and again and the droplets seem to fall elsewhere.
Hope everyone is well and happy :-)
~M~
Hi everyone .. sad day here .. a colleagues son was killed in a car accident last night.
As fate would have it, I was on with VCARS when the call came in ..
Jeff is about 25.
May be offline for a bit.
~M~
OMG how tragic "M"...glad you will be there for them, to offer them support...25, just a child...
Sending prayers for all...
Oh MarilynneS, how sad. Loosing a child is a real tough road. I wish you strength to share this heavy burden.
The flowers are beautiful.
Ann
Marilynne - how sorry I am to hear that tragic news. Will be thinking of you and your friends as you help to ease their burden at this time.
I've been pretty much MIA this week as I've had my daughter and granddaughter here and DH was in China for most of the week. DD heads back to Vancouver tomorrow. We'll see them off to the airport in the morning.
Following that, late to church after which there is a special meeting in regard to a $ 2 million renovation of the older part of our church. The sanctuary is 20 years newer than the rest of the structure. Much needed for environmental concerns. We are heating the whole outside in the winter which leads to premature boiler problems as well as horrendous fuel waste.
Then, I've had a viola section rehearsal changed from last week to this week. Call time is noon, but I will be late because of the meeting. The the first full rehearsal of the Ottawa Symphony for the concert which will be next Monday. That takes place from 3-6. And at 7-9:30, the other orchestra in which I play has a rehearsal. Don't know how much use I'll be to them, but I will go. Have to miss next week because of direct conflict with the OSO and as principal viola, it's not good for me to miss if I can avoid it.
See you on Monday.
Ann
Thanks to all of you for your kind words. It sure has been a sad few days here in Thunder Bay. I worry about my bud and her hubby as Jeff (the young man that was killed in the accident) was the whole focus of their lives. He was their only child adopted when he was a new born.
Right now, while the investigation into the accident continues and the family awaits the completion of the post mortem, we are all shuffling along. Family has arrived from out of town and at least their appearance and support have eased the parents burden a bit. No doubt the upcoming week will be fraught with new heartache .. definitely a 'life experience' NO parent wants to go through.
Seems everyone here is busy with family and commitments .. I'm no different .. fortunately, or unfortunately, life continues to go forward .. and .. it is what you make it to be. So .. today I am making it a day to remember Jeff while I carry out household chores put on hold while we rallied around the parents.
Looks as though laundry is WAY overdo,as is the making and freezing of apple pies.
We had a heavy frost last night .. so .. I do think that NOW my gardens will have taken a direct SERIOUS hit ... not quite sure .. but .. there are a few more things to be taken out.
Take care and enjoy your day
~M~
"M" hard times for Jeff's family, an only child..it truly is hearbreaking...glad you are there to support your friends..you just never know do you?
My DIL Melanie went to the funeral home last night, youngster 21 hung himself on the front lawn tree in front of his mother's home, younger brother found him..how horrific for that poor child to find his brother!
No frost here as yet but know it's coming...very black and dull outside this morning, got to the city at 8am, had breakfast and am now waiting for all the other staff to arrive..
Brought 6 more santa heads to paint for the dg on-line victorian santa workshop-just the armitures left to cut, waiting for the hair and I'll be all set...just incase brought in crochet baby blanket I'm working on so between those 2 I should be able to fill in my day...
OHMIGOSH Betty .. quite the ordeal for your DIL .. not to mention the brother of the victim .. am hoping the VCARS unit was on hand .. their pretty prevalent .. mayhaps not called VCARS but Victim Services ..
All here in in a state of profound anticipation .. Jeff's funeral is Wednesday .. it's a toss up as to whether I'll go .. I may just volunteer to watch the family home and make coffee.
Digressing here .. DH and I did a BIG shop at the Superstore today .. I don't usually shop there .. but .. they had some great PRE holiday deals.
WELL .. I don't know if I am the ONLY one noticing the price HIKES or not !! My gosh some things (ie cheese products) have increased in price .. several other items have as well .. am thinking the VERY unstable US economy and gas prices are making it so. Makes me wonder how young families are making a go of it .. am going to have to pay more attention to the election platforms ..
Kind of an on and off rainy/sunny day here .. no more frost .. looking more towards the weekend for that.
Hope all your projects are evolving as I type this Betty .. you are most assuredly the QUEEN of multi tasking :-)
Gonna be an early night tonight ..
Ciao
~M~
Was an early night last night 7:30 and in bed, lordy muscle spasms hurt terribly..have a pillow supporting my shoulders in hopes it eases the pain, couldn't take pain killers because I had to drive myself in this morning...
"M" your help at their home will be so appreciated...after Roger passed, my Grandmother/dad/2 SIL/ 3 adopted sisters passed within a few years, I've found that I do everything to avoid funeral parlors and funerals...too many memories just can't do it...so I try to help where I can...
Is so dreary here in the city today, one would almost think it's night time..rain, thunder and lightning...left this morning at 6:30 hoping to get to the city so I could spend an hour at the Super Walmart down the street but traffic was bumper to bumper and I didn't get here till 8:30...not nice
Do hope it's a sunshine day in your neck of the woods...
