Rapid fire I guess

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

well now they're predicting it to hit us directly again...

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Can only hope the weather channel says it will hit the May river sand bar. LOL.

Lots of sheer and a long ways to go. The weather channel is getting hopped up because we haven't gotten hit since something like 1896.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

... Minus three
why in the world would you want the sandbar gone???

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, I like that sandbar too. I have kayaked out there; we practiced a little yoga, picnicked and paddled back. But, if I were in a powerboat I would not want to run into it.

It is 2:30 am, and if the path holds, it looks like an evacuation is going to be called as early as Thursday morning. If an evac. is called, we have to go because our security will block access to the causeway to our neighborhood.

Deb, like Trent said, storms in Columbia are not the same. No flooding (that is what would affect me here ) and they are used to truly violent thunderstorms. Not at all like the wimpy ones we get along the coast. If the electricity goes out it is usually for hours rather than days. When the electricity stayed out after Hugo is was because SCE&G had sent all their trucks to Charleston in preparation for the storm damage there.

Several of the computer models takt Hanna out to sea, wouldn' t it be nice if those patterns hold?

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Hmmm.... I haven't seen anything taking Hanna out to sea, but the track is moving further to the north, and it's not predicted to be as strong a storm. Hanna's barely moving at the moment.

Wow, the models sure did change over night. Looks like we might miss it entirely now.

Yippeee, maybe my preperations worked.

In the middle of the night most of the computer models had it landing smack in our backyard and now it definitely seems to have moved northward. But X, I promise I won't let my guard down, everything stays packed!

And that's a bad thing??? LOL

I'm still bettig on the outer banks.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

You know what happened in the middle of the night at my house?

Fire alarms went off. I hate the wired in ones. They get dusty over the years and that's what sets them off. All wired together so I had 9 of them screaming at me. The fun part is fining the dirty one. Also for some reason they never go off durning the day only at night. If I have a heart attack it's going to be from those alarms.

Strangely the kids sleep right threw it.

We had one do that the other day too, I think the backup battery was going and it was "kindly" alerting us to that fact. I'd have liked it to choose a time, say other than 2am, but... oh well. Our birds went crazy of course - poor things.

And no, definitely not a bad thing. We weather geeks are just too into storms, LOL

Looks like Hanna might breeze right on by us here in SC, at least according to the latest update. Might have to keep an eye on Ike though, long range models have it curving north much sooner than originally forecast - possibly east of the Florida coast.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

We are breathing easier down here and keeping all the Grand Strand and NC folks in our T's and P's.

Bless you Ardesia for your hurricane deterring shopping!

I just got off the phone with the people who installed my new central a/c unit last January. It's a 2.5 ton Carrier that is about 4 feet tall on a plastic slab which covered my old concrete slab. I asked them if a unit with that high a profile should be tied down .. not necessarily for a tropical storm, but for a storm that had 100+ sustained winds and gusts even higher .. guess what .. they didn't have a clue. One guy said, "well there is a big copper tube going into the house connected to the unit, it's not going anywhere". I said "well from what I understand, copper is a soft metal and very malleable". Guy said "malle what?" I said "very bendable". Guy said "nah .. it's like steel"

So I thanked them for their expertise, hung up the phone.

So can anyone here that knows what the word malleable means tell me if a unit with this high a profile would need to be secured in a direct hit of a Cat 2 or better storm?

Jeeze!

Ike is getting scary.

Interesting question X. The copper line won't hold it if it wants to take flight but on the other hand the compressor is a fairly heavy item. I've never seen one bolted down so I would assume that they don't take flight.

Hanna is a done deal no problem there. Ike is somewhere around 140 MPH and is looking very tight. Yes that would be the scary one for the moment.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Side question. Why do some of our user names appear in Red?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I don't see any red????

X, that is hysterical. My AC units are set 4" off the ground on a platform and I don't think they are bolted down either. Along the coast building code rules and if it is not code, they are probably OK.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Appear red? You're just jealous you don't hear my voices.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Hrm, me and X are in red. I think it must be the color of a visited link. Yeah, that's it. So at least I'm not seeing things. LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

my links appear green when i click on them but red when the cursor is over them.
PS no school tomorrow!!!

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Red, Green - same difference - well, to some. LOL
