Eeek... It's Hurricane Hanna now.
Rapid fire I guess
yeah... Just more time for it
to strengthen more. Its already a day and a half ahead of the forecasted strength

They're saying TD Nine could be TS Ike by the end of today too.
*accidentally called it Isidore earlier, oops.

It's offical .. tropical storm Ike! the Projected path is right toward the east coast bend .. so looks like Hanna on Saturday and Ike on Monday.
C'mon Ardesia SHOP
X
Heading for the outer banks, they always seem to end up there.
The storms are to far away now to get a good bead on them.
Ummm, not heading for the outer banks at the moment, but we can keep our fingers crossed (sorry outer banks.)
You're right, Corey, it's too far out for any certainty, let's hope this map changes.
(For everyone else Corey, Trent, Ardesia and I all live in Beaufort County just to the north of this current forecast track.)
is that good or bad?? Would you rather get the northeastern quadrant or the eye??
Neither, we want (if we have to have it) the southwestern side. The winds on the right or NE side of the storm are the strongest.
At least I think that is correct, meteorologist John what do you say????
OK, hang on, all you Beaufort area people! If it goes further north of you then WE get the N.E. or eye. ;->
I'm still hoping it turns right and heads out past Bermuda! LOL. I don't see that choice in the models yet, though.
Deb
Just called my friends in Orlando. I might be going to Disney this weekend. Going North isn't an option if Hanna bulleyes Beaufort county. I would think Disney will be empty this coming weekend so that's a positive. Calling your house to see if the answering machine picks up, not such a positive.
Oh Trent the worse place to go when a hurricane is headed here is Northwest. That's where the hurricane will be going and you can get stuck in places like Columbia.
Winds are strongest in the eye wall, and it's bad because one moment the wind is blowing east to west, and then after a nice lull it's blowing west to east. So whatever it missed the first time, it usually gets the second. I suspect most of the trees that broke in Hugo did so on the second pass. That's why Gustav is so bad too this time, the winds are blowing the water north INTO the river bc the storm hit to the west. Last time it hit to the east, so the winds were pulling the water out of the lake. It would be a lot worse this time had the storm been stronger. I've heard some folks say their ears will pop in the eye of a hurricane if the pressure is low enough. Not sure I'd want to experience that, the lower the pressure the stronger the storm.
All that said, the NE quadrant is still the worst when it comes to vorticity in the atmosphere - thus tornadoes. I'd have to grab one of my books to see why; I can't remember what exactly causes that part of the storm to be so violent.
Last I looked at the models for Hanna, they all seemingly were starting to agree on a Georgia/SC landfall. And I think it was as a Cat 2 now. Looks like the eye will come right over us here in Cola. Guess I'll be putting my garage to good use a bit early this year.

just in case, i cut most of the leaves of my plants with woody stems and big leaves such as confederate rose and mimosa (albizia) and empress tree. people in florida do it with plumerias to reduce stress on the branches. im going to also do that with the angel trumplets, if it does come. i need to have self control... i like to get ready for things like this, but i dont like them actially happening...
Most hurricanes don't bother Columbia. They routinely get pretty violent thunderstorms and by the time a hurricane gets that far inland it is usually not much different. Hugo was the rare exception.
X,maybe all my organizing worked, my plants are stowed, I have reservations if necessary, and Hanna has slowed down some.
Tell me o wise one .. why do they say a hurricane makes landfall when the eye hits and not when you start getting hurricane force winds? .. its very confusing. When I hear " the hurricane will make landfall in X hours" is very misleading. It seems to me that when you start getting hurricane force winds, it has made landfall.
X
if we must, we will evacuate to Lexington... friends and family are there. if it does get bad up there I and some friends of mine will just have a hurricane party! lol
Ardesia, you need to do more shopping .. Ike is right behind Hanna and Josephine is behind Ike.
X
Oh lord, wish I'd had that bent pine tree removed......
Deb, there is a 80 foot tall DEAD pine tree 2 doors to the east of me. That makes me really nervous!
X
Golly, X, just have to hope the wind blows the right way!
We should have had a pine removed ourselves, I hate those things now.
I know it seems silly (or not, this is a garden forum), when property is in jeopardy along the coast, but I do worry about the plants in hurricanes. That's one reason I could never move to Florida.
I'm just worried about the wind up here; it shreds some of my Traveler's and rare EE/Bananas really bad when it gets too strong; so I'll have to protect those. Plus all my ginger just started blooming - argh.
Mother nature isn't holding back this year... these things keep popping off the assembly line.
ok i just checked... my house is between 13-16 feet above sealevel, and my g-parents place on the Island is 6.5 feet above sealevel
X, to answer your question about the Hurricane winds. I think it's because most of the hurricane force winds are always right at the eye wall itself (or in that NE quadrant), at least in a Cat 1 or Cat 2 storm. Typically the outer bands of the storm are TS force only. Now if you get up to a Cat3 or higher (major classification) then that's not always true. The hurricane force winds extend well outside the eye wall. So you have a good point on that.
This graphic shows the scale of the winds though, and how localized the hurricane force winds are currently in this Cat 1 Hanna. Notice where the center of the storm is, and where the red is... that NE quadrant is a beast.

Well Trent I'm considered on high ground at a whooping 22 Ft. It's called the low counntry for a reason.
The main thing is where will the tide be as far as flooding. Storm surge at low tide is not a problem, a large storm surge at high tide can very much be a problem and go inland a long ways. You also do realize from the HHI bridge to 170 is a pennisula with large rivers on either side? The reason Bluffton is called Bluffton is that's where the high land is. Same with Savannah, if you look at an elevation map you will see that downtown Sav. is the high ground for miles around. A couple of thoughts for you.
Panic never helped a soul do anything. Lots of time to do whatever.
You didn't anger any Hindu water gods when you were in Indian??? Just wondering?
LOL.
lol no because i know those gods are fake
will this storm not make up its mind??? now it is going dead on towards charleston.... or s they say...

argh! w/e i give up! y'all can look the map up yourselves.... i tried 4 times already

Keonikale, wouldn't it be prudent just to cut every thing to the ground under high wind circumstances? They will come back and you'd eliminate the possibility of them getting ripped out of the ground. My gingers are blooming as well, they are 6 - 7 feet tall and I'm seriously considering cutting them down if we are gonna get a direct hit.
X
I could do that for a few things, but this late in the year I figure why bother - winter will kill them back anyway. Now my potted travelers palms and such can all go indoors, so I'd definitely move them. It looks like we'll be in the west part of the storm, so right now I'm not too worried. If was in Camden or Florence, it'd be another story.
like i said earlier.... i cut most leaves off to reduce the amout of wind damage on the plant. things like bananas that can break their trunks, but normally would regrow from above the ground in the spring. also i would do this for plants that will put on a show in a bit or are just getting pretty or have a long time left until dormancy.
LOL X, I never shop before a storm. Because of our marsh front location and elevation (or lack of it at 14.5') we have to leave. I figure we can buy anything we might need wherever we evacuate to. Fact is, we won't come back until electricity and water are restored so extra batteries, etc. are unnecessary.
I just re-read"The Great Sea Island Storm of 1893" last evening. That was the last biggie to hit this part of SC/GA. One might say after 116 years we might be due for another.
Nice WTOC said possible land fall in Beaufort county. Got to love when you're mentioned by name.
Looks like Hanna is falling apart at the moment. High pressure to the North hmmmm.
Two more cominmg up behind Hanna looks like an interesting week.
yeah even the weather channel specificly mentioned HHI and SAV. winds now 70 mph meaning is a TS again. theyre still saying that gustav is keeping it from strengthening which means as it (gustav) dwindles away...... you know what happens
well they just announced that the beaufort cnty sheriff's dept says that we should be preparing for it to hit us on the weather channel
You didn't hear it from me, but chances are the Governor will make an announcement tomorrow with what the plans are. Not sure if he's flying back from the Convention or not, just that he'll talk. I think they want to see what the storm does overnight. It's getting sheered pretty bad at the moment (considering), but once that stops they'll know how much it'll intensify - or not. Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll stay a TS and just bring rain (and less wind).
yeah.......
Hope so. I just saw Sanford on TV at the convention. He said something about making a decision tomorrow.
well i hope we all evacuate but it doesnt do any damage.... maybe some torrential rain in the upstate. i want to go see my long lost friends in Lexington and have a hurricane party w/ them!!!
i probably wont get my wish exactly tho....
Trent: You know if it comes through Beaufort or Charleston, it's going to head straight on up through Col'a. Maybe you need a friend to to the SW to party with.
well thats fine. it wont be as strong with no storm surge even if it is a hurricane still it will not be too bad. i think we are kind of using this as an excuse to go visit friends... but now they're saying if it stays at or below a 1 the whole time, we will stay here.... i have no clue... i'll go if they do and stay if they stay.whatever im tired of keeping up with them... but either way, we will still get out of school.
