Courbet - I grew up in the carribean and the "fruit" that you eat is what I've been searching for here high and low. We call it sorrel however the sorrel I've found here is not the same - we make a drink out of it and it's delicious! Your pictures with the children are so cute! My Saffron does the same thing except mine goes from deep orange to yellow - I never know what it's going to produce for me but I really like it that way!
Courbet's picture of the edible hibiscus looks a lot like the buds on the H. acetacella I had last year. Sorry I do not have a photo of the buds on mine but they looked identical.
This one was said to be invasive but I haven't seen even one seedling and the mom plant did not make it through the remodeling of the house; it was badly trampled by construction guys. Maybe mine was a hybrid and that is why I don't see any little ones.
