I'm hoping someone cantell me what these flying bugs are. I noticed them this past weekend - swarming low to the ground as well as up around my tree. They do not appear aggressive - towards me. But I did notice they will swarm on each other on the ground and "attack". I'm not sure if this is a mating game or they are really ticked.
Anyway, they are about 3/4 " long with shiney black/blue wings. Their bodies are hornet-like with the main body being orange and they have a yellow stripe across their "waist".
Are they friend or foe?
Thanks!!

Friend. This appears to be Scolia dubia (Hymenoptera: Scoliidae) - see http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1831/
Their larvae are parasitic on the grubs of scarab beetles, including Japanese beetles - see http://ipm.ncsu.edu/AG268/html/scoliid_wasps.htm
suunto - thank you very much!!! Great info!
