I was wondering how Lin made out in the storm? And what about our new friend on the AV forum imadigger?? Has anyone heard from them?
o/t Has anyone heard from plantladylin?
Here I am jannich. The rain has finally slowed down. We had over 13" here in Palm Bay. The entire Brevard County is flooded. We had no damage, just a lot of waterlogged plants. I left most of them outside and played it by ear. If it really started to blow, they would have been brought inside the garage.
Lyn is probably going thru what I had yesterday and today. This is a very slow moving storm dumping lots of rain. I hope she has power. Some sections along the coast have none. Now it's headed out over the ocean and then it's headed to Jacksonville.
plantladylin also just posted in another thread.
Glad you made it through with no damage, imadigger!
Hi Jan,
I'm still here! We are weathering the storm. Hasn't been real bad here yet. That darn Tropical Storm Fay decided to hang out a LOT longer than anyone wanted! We are getting blasted with gusty winds and heavy rains right now but it's supposed to get even worse as the night goes on. We are due to have @50 mph winds with gusts a bit higher. Can't complain, at least it's not a devastating hurricane!
I feel bad for Imadigger/Eileen down south of me in Palm Bay! They have been hit hard from this storm. That area has already had 25" of rain and more is expected. The prediction is they will have upwards of 30" total before the storm passes! That may not sound like a lot of rain to some folks but this is Florida and the elevation here (Daytona Beach) is about 12-13 feet! It's probably about the same where Imadigger lives. They are having a bad problem with floods in her area. People have water in their homes in some places. This has been the worst Tropical Storm in a long, long time. I've been in Florida 41 years and I remember a tropical storm back in the 80's that caused lots of flooding but I don't think it was as bad as this one. "Fay" decided to stop moving and was stationary over Brevard County where Imadigger lives ... dumping so much rain and it still hasn't stopped raining. I hope she will be able to pop in sometime before long but it may be a few days. Lots of power lines down in that area from the winds.
I didn't sleep much last night, worrying about sever weather (tornado's) but luckily we didn't have any problems. I don't think we are under any warnings for tonight except the Tropical Storm warning. I took a little video out in the yard earlier with the trees blowing. I've been trying to upload it here but I can't seem to preview it. The computer has been slow and had some problems today (cable) probably from the gusty winds. Even the t.v. has had problems of getting stuck and the picture will freeze and audio will keep repeating over and over. I have to change the channel to get it back to normal. I guess it's something with the cable box.
Well, I might not be able to log on for a day or two. I am volunteering at the college on Friday for student dorm check in and I know Saturday and Sunday will be clean up days around the yard!
I will try to pop in once in awhile to just say hi. I'm hoping we don't lose power from the storm.
I couldn't upload the video I took of the trees bending and blowing in the wind but I'm showing a pic of two little baby squirrels that blew out of their nest. I was out front and heard what sounded like a bird chirping real loud like it was in much distress. I followed the sound over to the side of the house by my husband's boat. I could tell it was coming from a tree right next to the driveway. All of a sudden I saw an adult squirrel hanging on the tree with a baby in it's mouth! It ran up the tree and there is a large nest at the top of the tree. Then I noticed one baby on the ground and picked it up thinking it was dead but they are newborns, no fur yet and eyes not even open. My husband got an empty recycle bin and we put newspaper in it and placed the baby inside then I saw another baby on the ground and we put that one in there too. We had the crate on it's side and wedged it under the tire of the boat trailer facing away from the wind and rain. I went back a few minutes later and both babies were gone. I came back inside but a few minutes later went out the front door and here comes mama/papa squirrel with a baby in it's mouth, running through the front yard to another tree. Hopefully they found a safe place for their little babies. They were so cute, I hope they survive this awful storm!
My computer is sooo slow! It took forever for that post to go ... So glad you are okay Eileen! Y'all really had the worst of it down your way! We have had a lot of rain, right now it's just moderate but not anything like what is coming tonight and tomorrow. I'm hoping "Fay" will decide to pick up speed and get out of here before long! She's still only moving at 2 MPH ... we are supposed to have 50 to 60 mph wind gusts overnight and in the morning.
Lin...
Thinking of you and hoping you are doing OK! (As well as all other Floridians on DG!)
I haven't been on DG much, and I really miss all my friends!
Take care of yourself... I will keep you in my prayers!
Karen
Still fine here .... LOTS of rain, gusty winds but that's about it ... no severe weather thank goodness!
Good Morning,
I'm so glad to hear from you 2 .I was worried about you gals. Thank you for checking in with us.We have to keep track of our internet family:)
I was going to check back here last night to see if anyone had posted but fell asleep on the couch.LOL.Sorry about that:)
Hi Eileen,I can't believe the amount of rain you have gotten.Oh my goodness where is all the water going to go.Your going to need a boat to get around.LOL.,I just saw on TV a man was in a Kayak rowing down a street. That was in Melbourne is that near you? I saw a mail truck go by to and the water was right at the top of the tires.WOW.So glad your safe and sound.
Hi Lin,How was your night? Rock and rolling with the rain and wind? Hope all is well with you and hubby. These storms are unbelievable,I have never seen bad storms till I moved to the south. They are scary I hope your little squirrels made it though the night.Stay safe.
From what the weather station is saying the storm is heading for the panhandle of Fl...Yea! If it keeps that track I'm going to get some of the rain.I live 35 miles from the Fla line right above the panhandle.. And all I can say is BRING IT ON!!!!. LOL.Were still in severe drought and need some rain..
Thanks again for checking in with us,keep us posted on whats going on.Jan
I just ran into my computer room to find out about you all. Our TV is saying that Faye is still hanging around Daytona BEach..............with tons of water.........hope Lin checks in this morning............
Good morning gal's!
Jan: Yep, it looks like you are going to be getting some of Fay's rain in your area ... she's heading that way She really seems to be dumping a lot of rain wherever she travels! Some areas sure need the moisture from the droughts they've been having but hopefully there won't be any more flooding.
We had a lot of wind and rain through the night. I just turned the news on again and the eye is over us now and winds are picking up again as it has begun to move ashore again.
Imadigger lives in Palm Bay which is a suburb of Melbourne. They really had it very bad down there. News reports have been showing the horrible flooding ... vehicles under water and police, firefighters and military vehicles evacuating people from their homes. Yes, kayaks, canoes, row boats and even air boats are helping with evacuations. There is 5' of standing water in some places and the only vehicles that are able to get through the deep water is real high military type vehicles which have been helping a lot too.
Many folks had water breach their homes so there will be a lot of monetary damage. Some did not have flood insurance because they are not in flood zones where it isn't required. I feel very bad for those folks because their insurance will not cover any of the damage from the water! I think we will definitely be adding flood insurance to our homeowners policy real soon! We are not in a flood zone either and our lot is fairly high but if that amount of rain (25") had hit our area, it's a good possibility we would've had water intrusion in the house. My sister has been working in the insurance field for 36 years and she says it's always a good idea to have it in the South because of the possibility of flooding that comes with hurricanes and tropical storms. It's apparently somewhat inexpensive to add to an existing policy, so would be worth it!
Well, gotta run ... phone keeps ringing! I will check in again later on.
To all in the path of Fay ... Stay safe!
Well, this storm just doesn't want to move fast enough for me. It stopped raining for a while and I thought that would be it. It's raining again. Thank God, the winds are not bad. Every now and then we have a small gust. The water in our swale is still there and the fire ants are on the rampage. When I walked Shanghai early last night, I got bit by fire ants. I didn't see any mounds so they must be out looking for new homes. I had to run into house, jump in bathtub and run water to get them off. Poor dog didn't know what was happening. I love Florida, can put up with the heat and humidity but hate the fire ants.
Well this phone doesn't stop ringing. Children are calling from up NY way to see if we're OK. Gotta go now. Will check in later.
Thanks to all for thinking of us.
Keep safe, everyone, in Fay's path.
See you later ^_^
hoping we get another hello from both of you before the night is over.........stay safe.......
gail
Glad to hear from you ladies, thanks for checking in with us.What a nasty storm Fay has turned out to be.Melbourne is what I keep seeing on the news here, the flooding looks bad.Oh I feel so bad for the people without the flood insurance.Glad to hear from you Eileen,I hope your home isn't in the flood zone.I hate the fire ants.I wish I knew how to get rid of them.I have tryed just about everything that walmart sells to kill them.LOL.
Stay safe ladies, let us know whats going on please..
Well me and my big mouth... I want rain but just a good soaking.LOL..The weather here In Al.has already put out servere weather warning. My area is supposed to get 15 inches of rain, the county started today letting a foot of water out of the large lakes and will do another tommorow just to be on the safe side.
The rain has finally stopped. Thank God we had no flood damage. Our roof leaked in the doorway from laundry room to garage. It's funny, because we are getting a new roof soon. Just waiting for the roofer to finish up a job. We may need a new door. This one is swollen and is hard to shut. It may dry out. I guess time will tell.
Lin is probably getting the heavy rain that we had yesterday. This storm is finally starting to move. It's going 7 miles an hour. It looks like Gainsville and further north will have heavy rains too.
Tomorrow it's put back small plants and sweep up mess. Thbose in Fay's wake, please stay safe. Keep out of the water.
Have a good night folks.
Hello Ladies,
I haven't had time to check in until now. I've been down with a stomach virus of sorts ... really tired and dragging. Our weather is still crummy ... Fay is on the move towards the panhandle but we are still getting the outer bands of rains and gusty winds ... no biggie though, just depressing! I will be glad to see the sunshine so that everything can dry out. All of the schools and a lot of businesses are still closed but everything will be back to normal around here tomorrow as the storm moves farther NW. I will be spending the weekend in between the normal afternoon thunderstorms getting plants back in place.
My husband went out to the college today to get some paperwork ready for the start of classes on Monday. Spoke to the lady in charge of housing check in for all the different dorms and student village and they have ended up checking students in intermittently. I know there are lots of families from other states who have been worried about their sons and daughters coming to school in Florida with that storm. Thank goodness everyone has stayed safe.
Eileen, Your area was hit so hard! It has been all over the news. My sister from N. Georgia asked me about it when I spoke to her yesterday. I did hear that the federal government has now declared Florida a disaster area so FEMA will be involved in helping folks who got flooded out of their homes. There was millions of dollars of damage in your county ... I think I heard $13 M. A lot of families are displaced from the floods and it will be quite some time before the waters recede. There's just no place for it to go!
Well, I'm going to go take a nap ... Have a great weekend everyone.
Lin
To not feel good with some yucky virus is lousy in the midst of all your mess. Get well and thanks for reporting in, Lin.
Good morning,
I'm feeling a lot better this morning. Just taking it easy. Finally saw the sun shining, albeit briefly this morning! It's cloudy off and on and we are supposed to have thunderstorms this afternoon but Fay is out of here.
Jan: How are things in your area? Tropical Storm Fay has been up there pelting your area since yesterday. I hope you are safe from that awful storm, and I sure hope y'all don't have the flooding or lose power. Some areas in my county had 12"-15" of rain and bad flooding but the county just south of us really got hit hard. Something like $15 million dollars in damage (last I heard) in the city of Melbourne alone! There are still thousands without electricity.
I feel blessed, we didn't lose power and had no flooding waters. I pray for those who had so much damage from that storm. Now they are watching a wave that could become a Catagory 2 Hurricane by next weekend! At that time it is supposed to be down in the Carribean ... I hope it dissipates before it goes anywhere near land!
Jan: Stay safe and keep us posted on how you are doing!
Lin, when I talked to Jan yesterday (or day before?) she had been at Walmart buying as many bags of dirt as she could saying that 15" of rain was predicted for her immediate area. She said she was real concerned as her 5 acres is not high ground except for just her house is on a little rise.
I may try and call her to see what is going on. So glad you are feeling better and that the sunshine will come back without dreadful consequences of flooding.
Thanks for the update Gail ... let me know if you get through to her! They are having a LOT of rain from that storm! "Fay" just won't speed up and go away! I wonder why her city doesn't give out free sand bags? Down here they give you as many as you can put in your vehicle to take home! Some places supply the sand and bags but you have to bring a shovel and shovel it yourself but others shovel and tie the bags up for you and help load it into your car/truck.
I am keeping good thoughts that Jan is on high enough ground and doesn't have any flooding. That storm has just been amazing!
She missed my first call and I missed her call about 20 minutes ago. She said that the electricity had been cutting on and off all day and that the worst of the storm is expected tonight. She also reported threats of tornadoes sighted already and more warnings of tornadoes to stay in place. They are still saying up to 15" of rain which she knows her house can't handle. I could tell by her voice on the machine that she is plenty concerned.
Her little town of Red Level didn't offer any help........she has had to get ready for the storm by herself and feels very inadequate and not able to even find sand. Bags of soil was all she could do and she told me yesterday she kept making more trips to Walmart (the only store around) to load the car again with more bags.
I had asked her what was the most rain she has ever had in that house in one day and she said 8 inches and it almost came in, so let's just keep her in our prayers that she is safe.
Maybe we will know something before I go to bed tonight.......think I will go accu weather and type in her zip code.......that is pretty accurate.
I hope she's okay, I've been worrying about everyone!
Hi,I thought I would pop in to say Hi to you all before the lights go out again.I've been without power most of the day. It's been raining but nothing major so far ,tonight is supposed to be the heavy rain and some winds. The tornado warnings as expired so thats good news.I have a feeling its going t be along night.
Sorry I missed your call this afternoon Gail. The hummingbirds was knocking on my window telling me there feeders was empty and they needed food.LOL...Will check in with your ladies in the morning.
Lin so glad you saw sunshine today and your feeling better!
Nighty night ladies.
SO glad I found this thread!
Lin I've been worried about you since I saw on the news Thurs. how hard you're area has been hit. Glad you're OK!
Janich I hope you and your house is surviving the water!
Good morning!
It rained off and on during the night but nothing major and it's cloudy and only drizzle now.Fay is moving her way to northern Al.I beleive. The weather men are saying we got 7-8 inches of rain which sure will help with the drought going on.I'm so glad we didn't get the 15 inches like they said we were going to get.Maybe with rain in the forecast for the next few days that will be the total amount.
Have a good sunday ladies.Jan
jannich
It's good to hear from you. Glad to hear you didn't get too much rain. Hope you didn't have any other damage. This storm is one for the history books. She liked Florida so much, she didn't want to leave. ^_^
Jan,
So glad you didn't have any flooding or damage from "Fay"! We lucked out here too. Only palm fronds and small branches all over the yard from the gusty winds but nothing else! Did yard work today ... first day we've seen the sun shine in two weeks! I sure hope that storm has faded away by now and isn't causing flooding or worse anywhere else!
Now we are going to be watching the news this coming week ... another tropical depression that could become a cat 2 hurricane when it reaches the caribbean late next week! I sure hope it fades away long before getting to that area ... if it is a catagory 2 storm and moves into the warm waters of the gulf it will intensify quickly!
Hi ladies,
Well it seems like Fay just doesn't want to leave. We had a lot more rain and tornadoes warnings up all day since early this morning.I had to run to town today and passed a convoy of 15-16 power trucks from Georgia.I heard on the news that they were heading up to Montgomery to help out.The news said there's power lines down in the whole city and pretty bad flooding.
Lin,I say the tropical depression, might be Gustave.Thats my nephew's name.Hope the storm isn't anything like him .You could be in for a heck of a storm.lol.
Jan,Lin ,and Eileen I am releived to hear you all made it thru Fay safely...that was the longest I ever remember hearing of a storm repeatedly wreaking havoc over and over the same area...just crazy! I am sure you all thought of maybe starting on an ark..lol..Jan I hope it scoots out of your area soon..sounds like you have been getting some pretty bad storms out of Fay too...
Tropical Storm Fay was one to remember ... although a lot of folks would love to forget! Major damage here in Central Florida ... flooding is really bad, a lot of homes evacuated because of a couple of feet of water inside! I feel so bad for some who did not have flood insurance! On the news tonight one lady was saying they went back into their house to get a few things and that mildew is already growing on some of the walls! There are many neighborhoods still underwater and the only way in and out is by boat! Really looks strange seeing homes sitting in the middle of all that water and cars and trucks with water up to their doors! There's so much standing water from so much rain and ponds and lakes are overflowing. A few rivers are near flood levels too. More rain has fallen the past three days too. There are little fish swimming in peoples yards as well as snakes ... and a couple of 5' alligators have been spotted too. Yikes! People are being told to stay out of the water ... some idiots are allowing their kids to play in all that nasty water! And, I do mean nasty ... sewers are backed up and it's mixed with all that rainwater!
Now ... Tropical Storm 'Gustav' is down in the Caribbean ... hopefully it will hit some mountainous areas down there and break up. We sure don't need another Tropical Storm or Hurricane heading this way right now.
Lin and Jan, I'm so glad that you both came through the TS safely! It may just be a depression, or whatever, now, but it's come to visit me and brought plenty of rain with it! It rained a lot of yesterday, all last night, all day today so far, and is supposed to continue raining through tonight with still some showers tomorrow. We desperately need the rain, but we're under a flood watch already. I sure hope it doesn't flood here. We, personally, should be fine, unless the creek behind us floods or jumps its banks. That's never fun. I'm not really worried, but am keeping a watch on it, just to be sure. There are lots of trees and wires down in the area, though.
TS Gustav is now Hurricane Gustav. The way it looks, Gail and Jan, you both need to keep an eye on it to see where it goes.
There are also three more tropical waves (or whatever the proper term is) out there, two of which show a medium possibility of becoming something more. Looks like it's gonna be a very busy year! I hope not, though!
Hi Amy ... that Fay sure has made her way around, hasn't she? And she's still on the move northward. We are watching the weather reports ... it is that time of the year for Tropical Storms and Hurricanes! I saw on the news that there are a few more tropical waves coming off the coast of Africa that meteorologist's will be watching closely! Hurricane Season is from June 1st through November 30th but late August and all of September are usually the time the U.S. mainland has landfall if we get them. The last report I heard on "Gustav" was it could be targeting South Texas or Alabama, so Yes ... Gail and Jan - be safe!
I am watching her........thanks
gail
Hi ladies, Fay sure was a strange storm. She sure did make the rounds to a couple state.
Amy Hi I hope your creek doesn't overflow. All the southern states needed the rain but to get it all at once, thats not how it should work.LOL.
I just heard on the news that they have down graded Gustav from a hurricane to a tropical storm but that could change back again any time.My friend called me the other night fromRhode Isand and told my her neice was going to Fla at the end of this week for vacation.I told her to watch the weather station, theres storms brewing .Hate to have them get stuck in a storm..
Yes, hopefully it will not come this far south. I think they will be using "Sally" to name a storm this year! Wonder if we will get that far on the list, hope not! Sally
LOL Sally ... Yes, your name is on the official list of named storms for 2008! http://geography.about.com/od/physicalgeography/a/2008names.htm
Hopefully we won't get anywhere near that part of the alphabet before cane' season is over with!
2005 was really weird ... went through the entire alphabet and had to start over using the Greek alpahbet! http://geography.about.com/od/physicalgeography/a/2005names.htm
I know a lot of folks are hoping no intense storms come North to mainland U.S.
Hi Lynn...glad you are doing well and the storm didin't get you!!!
OMG The news said Gustav was heading right at New Orleans. They sure don't need another storm..The news said already have 300 buses ready to evacuate people..
Gustav is one everyone is going to be watching, especially those folks in New Orleans! I can only imagine how the citizens of that area are feeling right now ... I know people are very nervous about another hurricane coming their way. It will be many years before they recuperate from Katrina, they sure don't need even a minor hurricane to make landfall there.
The Red Cross in my area is already putting people on call in case they open the shelters up .I'm taking classes for disaster relief to help the people that has to evacuate.I can't do much but I can hand out blankets and serve food:)
Jan,
You are an angel. There are so many families displaced during disasters, every little bit someone can do to help is wonderful. Volunteers are always such a huge asset to any area hit by devastating storms.
I am keeping an eye on Gustav and will also be keeping watch out for the next one in line which will be Hannah. She might be aiming her sights on Florida, as another major hurricane by late next week! This is the active part of the hurricane season. There's another wave right behind (#8 Hannah) that meterologists are going to be keeping an eye on too.
