plantladylin wrote: Hi Jan, I'm still here! We are weathering the storm. Hasn't been real bad here yet. That darn Tropical Storm Fay decided to hang out a LOT longer than anyone wanted! We are getting blasted with gusty winds and heavy rains right now but it's supposed to get even worse as the night goes on. We are due to have @50 mph winds with gusts a bit higher. Can't complain, at least it's not a devastating hurricane! I feel bad for Imadigger/Eileen down south of me in Palm Bay! They have been hit hard from this storm. That area has already had 25" of rain and more is expected. The prediction is they will have upwards of 30" total before the storm passes! That may not sound like a lot of rain to some folks but this is Florida and the elevation here (Daytona Beach) is about 12-13 feet! It's probably about the same where Imadigger lives. They are having a bad problem with floods in her area. People have water in their homes in some places. This has been the worst Tropical Storm in a long, long time. I've been in Florida 41 years and I remember a tropical storm back in the 80's that caused lots of flooding but I don't think it was as bad as this one. "Fay" decided to stop moving and was stationary over Brevard County where Imadigger lives ... dumping so much rain and it still hasn't stopped raining. I hope she will be able to pop in sometime before long but it may be a few days. Lots of power lines down in that area from the winds. I didn't sleep much last night, worrying about sever weather (tornado's) but luckily we didn't have any problems. I don't think we are under any warnings for tonight except the Tropical Storm warning. I took a little video out in the yard earlier with the trees blowing. I've been trying to upload it here but I can't seem to preview it. The computer has been slow and had some problems today (cable) probably from the gusty winds. Even the t.v. has had problems of getting stuck and the picture will freeze and audio will keep repeating over and over. I have to change the channel to get it back to normal. I guess it's something with the cable box. Well, I might not be able to log on for a day or two. I am volunteering at the college on Friday for student dorm check in and I know Saturday and Sunday will be clean up days around the yard! I will try to pop in once in awhile to just say hi. I'm hoping we don't lose power from the storm. I couldn't upload the video I took of the trees bending and blowing in the wind but I'm showing a pic of two little baby squirrels that blew out of their nest. I was out front and heard what sounded like a bird chirping real loud like it was in much distress. I followed the sound over to the side of the house by my husband's boat. I could tell it was coming from a tree right next to the driveway. All of a sudden I saw an adult squirrel hanging on the tree with a baby in it's mouth! It ran up the tree and there is a large nest at the top of the tree. Then I noticed one baby on the ground and picked it up thinking it was dead but they are newborns, no fur yet and eyes not even open. My husband got an empty recycle bin and we put newspaper in it and placed the baby inside then I saw another baby on the ground and we put that one in there too. We had the crate on it's side and wedged it under the tire of the boat trailer facing away from the wind and rain. I went back a few minutes later and both babies were gone. I came back inside but a few minutes later went out the front door and here comes mama/papa squirrel with a baby in it's mouth, running through the front yard to another tree. Hopefully they found a safe place for their little babies. They were so cute, I hope they survive this awful storm! |
