Can I post about a plant sale fundraiser?

Sand Lake, MI

Can I create a post that mentions a plant sale fundraiser for the local library and mention that we would gladly accept donations?
Thanks, Leann

You could probably make an ad for it in the Classified Ads section. It will cost $5.

Paul, as a general rule, we don't allow fundraisers or sale ads to be posted in the forums ;o)

I think it wouldn't be inappropriate to let people know when/where the sale is occurring, just like we do with a lot of other plant sale events, whether they're for charity or for profit. You're not allowed to promote your own business, but I don't think the AUP prohibits letting people know about something like this (for example, I recently posted in the MidAtlantic forum about the rhizome sale that the local iris society was having).

If anybody wants to ask about plant donations or direct cash donations for the library, they need to do that via Dmail rather than by posting on the forums -- but most folks know that, and if anybody doesn't know and inquires, just reply via Dmail and post "you've got Dmail" in response.

Indeed, it includes any "solicitations" for your favorite fund raising event. That may seem extreme (and there are probably announcements posted that have escaped our attention.) But we have this rule because we have to be fair to all our members - if we allow some charities or fundraisers to be promoted, we then must allow ALL our members to use the forums and dmail to promote their favorite worthy cause.

Or we would have to spend a lot of our administrative time sorting through the posts and deciding which ones are allowed, and which aren't - something that inevitably leads to hurt feelings and accusations of favoritism.

I do understand that. But if it is OK to post to say that a local nursery is having a clearance sale, shouldn't it be OK to post about other plant sales, regardless of whether the money is going to a retail concern or to a charitable cause?

I'm not advocating that the post is allowable because it's for a fundraiser, I'm saying it would be an announcement about a probably good & inexpensive source of plants...

Is there a way to simply announce the event and leave out or at least not "push" the fundraising aspect of the sale? Would that be satisfactory?

(When I posted about the rhizome sale, for example, I didn't say, hey everybody come and support the local iris society... I said, come out for a great selection of irises at really cheap prices. I didn't even think of it as a fundraiser, just as a great shopping opportunity. I hope I didn't misstep.)

Thanks all for the input.
