Laurel, where is the latest installment of the happenings at Maypop?
Happy Birthday, Harper - Part 7
Sometimes I use a mattock in the clay/rocky soil here! Either that, or a pick axe. Nice job out there Jan!
Oh, I am eager to tell you the story of the chimbly crew, but am bone weary from tending Maypop, four dogs, two cats and the garden alone these last days. It' is canning season too. I'll get to it. In the meantime, it may not tickle 'ya, but hope you share my joy...
The concrete foundation pumper guy had one hundred gallons of water that he donated to my drought stricken garden and waited a half hour while I ran around with hoses. He was asking what all the veggies were as he'd never seen most (like eggplant). He loved it and I gave him a jar of homemade plum jam as cukes give him indyjeshun. He ought to be more concerned about hepatitis C from the head to toe tats and piercings. But really, after having no rain at all so far this August, his gift was much appreciated. In other news..
DD is awaiting security clearance with the Dept. of the Interior to start a new job. School does not start until the 3rd, so she was antsy and wanted to come garden, cook and hang in the woods. Air Tran has this cheapy student stand by deal. She decided to try and come home yesterday. So she walked in, they gave her a voucher to take to the gate and she was ticketed for the very next flight. DH is in Atlanta and they will both come up tomorrow. Oh joy!!! I get to bond with DD and DH can take over "The Project". for a few days. We will visit some of our famous potteries and go to Anna Ruby Falls and the Covered Bridge where I have gone down the sliding rocks since I was a kid at camp. She's excited and so am I.
Laurel
Laurel! Glad to hear your garden got a drink and that your DD is coming!!
Take advantage of that relief! You've had your hands full.
So glad you'll get some time with DD before she's off to school again.
Thanx so, now believe it or not, I'm off to bed. Been up since 4:15 a.m. and in the garden at 5 a.m.

Enjoy that girl time. I have only gotten that through marriage.
My 3 DDILs are just the best. I know they appreciate me, too, cuz they've said so. They tell me horror stories of their friends DMILs and the D doesn't stand for dear, but dreaded. I can't imagine. I guess I'm so laid back that stuff doesn't bother me.
Laurel, have fun on the sliding rocks. Sounds like a blast!
Real cool for the water from the pumper guy. I bet he appreciated the education in the garden, too. Especially the gift of bounty.
That's sweet jan
Just a question here.
What is a mattock?
It's kinda like a pick ax, without the pick part, I think and the face is wider than a pick axe. At least that's what I think it is. I picture it as a hefty hoe. Maybe I'm full of beans too. If I'm wrong please set me straight..
Happy Birthday, Harper.
I have something like that and it has a pronged other end.
It's the only thing I can use to dig into the clay and stones here.
I had never used compost befor we moved last year. It helps tremendusly along with fine mulch to amend the soil. All my plants are bursting out of the soil.
I am really pleased with how the garden is doing the first year.
Thanks, Harper. It's true - a pic IS worth a thousand words. :)
Happy Birthday Harper. I think I'm a little late - - better late then never. I'm still overwhelmed with all the postings. Hope your day was grand!
Michele
Laurel - hope you and DD have some swell time together and that DH gets along well with the crew on the project. Somehow, I doubt he'll have the same level of "je ne sais quoi" as you do!
Hey, did you see that Big Foot didn't fly? What idiots! At least your woods are safe to prowl around in now.
Thanks Michele!!! You're not late, you're early!
What?! Big Foot was a fake? Oh, I miss out on everything without TV. I'll go check out CNN.com.
Sherrie - your eBay link doesn't work - it just goes to the home page.
Speaking of age . . . I don't have one. My body keeps telling me I'm in my 50's, but I don't believe it for one second!
My dear gardening friend, who is 86, says this is the best time of her life. She's been widowed for some time now and her "ministry" is having people from her church over for dinner - two or three times a week. She just cooks simple meat and veggie meals, but loves the company.
She's still planning and rearranging her garden (she can lug rocks around!), and loves her independence. I want to be like her at that age - except I hate to cook!
Oh, by the way, Harper - happy August birthday!
Harper - do you (or does anyone) recall the correct proportions of milk and water for treating powdery mildew? I have some ailing friends who need a spot of milk, but I can't recall the amounts to use. Oh, and happy new birthday!!
Thanks! Louise
BTW - Celeste and FlowerJen gave me the milk/water proportions for the PM...Thanks, Ladies!!
Oh, I was hoping to see the milk/water amounts cuz I've never heard of that before. Is that good for zinnias too?
Oh, sorry, Jan.......One part milk to 9 parts water, sprayed onto the plant a few times. I'm planning to use it on a few things that have PM this year.
ngam=Pat had posted it on another thread.....thats Pat!
Old fashioned remedy for powdery mildew. One part milk mixed with 9 parts water and spray effected plants. Has worked pretty well here. Occasionally have to spray a second time but usually if you do it right away once is enough.
LOL we crossed!!
Thankfully, you are on the ball, Pixie!!
thanx :)
Happy Birthday Harper!
Thanks Dave! I just spent the weekend at the beach. It was perfect!!!
Almost a week - way too long! Happy birthday, everybody! Let the party continue.
Just a spot check in. I'm trying to catch up on all the city stuff we've ignored (including friends). Glad you had a good time at the beach birthday girlfriend.
Laurel
.... the party continues!
Happy Birthday, Harper!
Happiest of September Birthdays, Harper. Looking forward to the actual day. Should I look for fireworks?
You should be ready for a comet or two, eclipses, and meteor showers. Happy September, Harper!
Happy, Happy, Harper!! The Countdown is ON! Hope you have happy "Month Before" your bday!!
Louise
