I dont know if darious is on here or not, but, last year I paid shipping for queen of the night from darious. When I got it, it had a lot of brown leaves. I chopped it all up, and planted a bunch of cuttings to make one extremely full large pot. tonight I did my round of eyeing all my plants, while I took my dogs out. I noticed one bud on this QOTN. Something I never expected this soon. Im sooo excited. Hope I can view the bloom, as I usually go to bed at about 7pm. My BF gets home around 11:45pm though, and I have advised him to check this plant every night when he comes home, and wake me if it is blooming lol. Anyways....just wanted to say thanks to darious, and let you know whats up with the plants you sent me.
queen of the night
Lismil: I hope you will be able to post some photo's when the bloom opens! And, don't forget to check out the fragrance! I've heard they have a very nice fragrance! I have a couple of small ones that have not bloomed yet and I am waiting patiently!
Clemen: Wow, please post a photo when that one opens up! Is that the Epi Oxypetalum "Queen of the Night" too or another Epi? Is the bloom going to be white or do you know? Can't wait to see it!
I have heard it said about so many different plants, that they have to be 2, 3, 4 or more years old before they will bloom. I don't think that is really the case at all. I think if a plant is happy in it's container, and likes the cultural conditions and care it is receiving it is gonna bloom when it is ready! I have heard of even small cuttings blooming. I do think some prefer tight roots to bloom and if a few cuttings are put into a real small pot they will fill that pot with roots quickly and then concentrate on producing flowers. That's just my take on it and I could very well be wrong.
Great growing, girl!
Hi Lin, I know you fron Laura's tread, hee, hee, and i ditto what you said above, Clemen
Hi ya Clemen,
Yep I met you on the other thread! I hope Lismil will post a picture of her plant too. I am really getting hooked on these Epi's from seeing everyone's photo's!
I have an Epi Oxypetalum "Queen of the Night" that I bought a couple of months ago at Home Depot or Wal-Mart. It's one of the Exotic Angel plants. I noticed in the center of the pot it has small pieces that looked like they were just chopped off and stuck in the soil. It is putting on some new growth and I can't wait to see some buds show up! I think I might divide it and have one inside the house and leave the other out on the deck to compare how they do.
Lin, the flower buds start growing from the older leaves!! I'll try to post my progress tomorrow.Clem
Ill try to get a pic when I get a chance. Been working all kinds of hours. Plantladylin, I got one of those exotic angel epis from wallmart also, but all it said was epiphyllum. It looks a bit different then my QOTN to me, but, who knows. Was yours actually labeled? I also get the rhipsalis from exotic angels at walmart whenever I can find them, and they are always labeled just rhipsalis also, and I end up having to ID them....just curious.
Lismil, yes mine was labeled Epiphyllum Oxypetalum but believe me that may be incorrect. EA labels all of their plants wrong 99% of the time!
There are a few Orchid Cacti that have the common name of "Queen of the Night" if I remember correctly. I will have to do some research!
Here's one that is called Queen of the Night. This is the Epi Oxypetalum: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2443/
and these are known as QOTN also:

I have a small thought to offer on the "my cutting is flowering" phenomenon. Epis flower on mature stems for the most part. When you take a cutting you usually take a mature stem. If the stem was hormonally prepared to flower on the plant before you cut it, it is likely to go ahead and flower as a cutting. After that though, the plant is likely to concentrate more on growing until it has again reached a mature size. Therefore, a plant grown from a cutting may flower in it's first year with you, and then skip one or more years while it "finds its feet". The same thing may happen with plants which are repotted or otherwise disturbed. This phenomenon leads to remarks like "My Epiphyllum flowered once, and has never done so again, what am I doing wrong?" The answer is NOTHING usually, the plant is just not ready yet. All plant growth and flowering is mediated by chemical flows within the plant stems and roots. These plant hormones control the timing of growth, flowering, fruiting etc. The best thing we can do for all our plants is to provide them with conditions which emulate their native environments (because that is how they are adapted to live) and to keep watch for predators and pests - the plants will do the rest. I am not saying we shouldn't fertilise or repot, just that we need sometimes to stand back a bit and not sweat it so much.
Ciao, KK.
Wren, does the cruling mean anything? I wonder when it will open?
I still think I have a little while then, the bud is not that big. It takes so long though, I think I am into the fiftth week of waiting!
You know the old saying that a watched pot never boils. In this case it is a watched bud.
I touched a leaf next to the leaf the bud was on, and the bud fell off 8-(. I see a couple little nubs right now on other leaves that look like they may be buds, but, they are so tiny, that its hard to tell...maybe they are just the beginning of new growth.
So sorry that your bud fell off, they sometimes do that.
Lismil, I am so sorry, I would be crying right now! I am an emotional lady, what can I say!
Nervous over here, just like having a kid, lol!
Clem - you lucky duck!!! I've had mine for 3 years now....absolutely HUGE (pot is probably around a 5 gal size) - it literally grew to the ceiling this spring when I started watering it regularly again....yet here we are....no buds let along blooms that I know of. Very sad!! Can't wait to see yours though!!!!
It looks like it will tonight. At least yours is in a great position for picture taking. I kept having to move mine into a better position to get a good picture.
Wow! Clemen, that is one gorgeous plant ... glad you showed the photo of the entire plant, really nice! Looks like you have multiple blooms, I see one that's not even open yet! What a shame they only stay open for such a short time! But, I guess that just adds to the excitement and anticipation of watching and waiting!
Yea...doin' the happy dance for you!!! Gorgeous bloom!!!
Wow...absolutely amazing...aren't they?
