AD - stop griping at me. I expect weather that's typical for our area - like sun in the summer and rain in the winter. This is supposed to be our last hot sunny month and it's not. Seems okay to me to remark on that. I reserve the right to complain. ^_^
It rained hard here from 1:00 p.m. until the middle of the night, but it was still hot and muggy. Felt like Florida. And I'm not living in Florida for a reason . . .

Another Hot Spell #2
Sally what a beautiful picture! It hasn't been bad here today but during the five o'clock news Seattle area was getting all kinds of rain and lightening etc. Ws getting a little chilly when I took the dog out awhile ago.
It is hard to educate some people....my mother will take her paint cans and some things out to hazmat on one hand because they are dangerous, then use some of the most gosh awful chemicals on her yard in the next breath;
Sally what a great photo. Just finished watching the convention and what a nice way to end the evening - seeing your photo. Thanks for that!
Too bad your ignorant neighbor does not live in San Francisco where I used to live - it is against the law to not recycle and it is everyone's responsibility to know about it. The city will bless you with a huge fine if they continue to see recyclables in your regular trash.
Portland1, that's a great law.
DH had the convention on, then switch channels and says "That's better". It was that dirty job program showing someone who drives a garbage truck. LOL
The rainbow was pretty, I agree nice way to end the evening. It was almost a double.
Nordstrom, where I work, has just taken the next step to corporate recycling. We no longer have trash at our desks and our recycle boxes take a lot more kinds of stuff. We're all laughing at how it will take some remapping of our brains to meet the company at this next step.
I love Dirty Jobs!! I have a big crush on Mike Rowe. Oops. The secret's out. LOL
I was on the 5th floor of a building in downtown Seattle with an office facing west that was all windows when the thunder and lightning was going this afternoon. I thought the commute to Woodinville would be bad, but it was okay. And it's not raining now, thank goodness.
How can you not have any trash? Recycle is good, but they don't take everything.
I bet that was something to see! I love a good lightning storm when it's not causing damage. I used to live near Redondo Beach in CA. We had some really good ones there, out over the ocean. We have a big picture DD had framed of a strike off the pier, it's really gorgeous.
Yeah. I think everybody likes watching Mike Rowe. He's so nice to look at. :-)
And he's funny. I love that.
I misspoke - there is a communal trash in a central location (kitchen) on each floor. So the thought is, I guess, that we'll assume recycle and have to get up to use the trash.
Just saw the news - apparently there was a weather system from the north colliding with a system from the south right over downtown. And then there was what they call a wall cloud right offshore that has wind going both up and down. I guess I'm glad I didn't know that when I was under it. LOL
Don't think I would have wanted to know either! Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
sally .... I love that rainbow picture. What a great way to end the day!
Thanks for the info on that school Portland. It actually sounds as if it would be a good one to live near. Can't say that about a lot of schools anymore. If I had kids and if I lived in portland, that's where I would want them to go! And I think that all places should have the recycling laws of San Francisco!
zhinu, here are two local news links about the fires. same newspaper, only one day apart. notice how the numbers change.

I'm like you in that I find them all interesting, but more from the science and ecology aspect of it. I'm just as entertained by the smaller ones in the picture up above (because there's so bloomin many) knowing that in a few years all will looke normal as I am by the giants such as this one http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/images/pqr/plume5.jpg I was the lookout in the tower when that started (the picture was taken within an hour of the fire starting---notice the flames hundreds of feet up in the plume). I posted the picture of what that burn area looks like now, 12 years later, it is the one up in a post above with the the trail going through standing dead sticks.

The plane from which the picture was taken was a plane that was being used to dump water on some of our other fires, they came over to "help". But, not a darn thing they could do (they did end up guiding people out of the forest).... they can't drop water on a fire that hot. For one, the water evaporates and is blown back up towards the plane and for two the air next to the fire is hot enough to make planes rise and the drop. I never want to see another fire like that one. so yep, I'm with you there, it's all interesting.
Red - I'm working on going to bed, but I'll try to remember to check it out tomorrow.
that's good, because it would keep me up if I were checking it out for the first time.
Sounds like it's under control, even is it will take awhile to get them all out. Hope conditions help you.
We have survived all of the summer fires with cold early summer and lots of rain in timely drops here in NW Montana. We are cold today with 56F right now in cloud covered skies. I missed all of the summer home but my DW didn't and the garden loved the cool and wet weather. Thank you for sending the rain from Oregon up to us. We appreciate it. I actually built a fire in the fireplace today to warm the house up.
Nice photo of rainbow Sally!
Soferdig, nice garden.
Soferdig, beautiful garden. A fire sounds really good...it has been damp and cold and I can't seem to get warm today...hhmmmm.
Please forgive me since I am new to DG but what is DH DW DIL, etc? I am assuming that H is for husband but what is the D in front of everything?
The D is Dear or D*&*%^ depending on how you are getting along that day
W - wife, IL - In-law etc.
I am still learning a lot of these and occasionally call my daughter and ask what does____mean. So you aren't alone here!!!
Here is everything you need to know if you follow all the links http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/876229/ , but to answer your question directly.
DH - Dear Husband
DW - Dear Wife
DIL - Daughter in law
DSD - Dear Step-Daughter
D is generally Dear, except in a few cases like Daughter in Law.
Mom, close, except on the in law, you are learning. Mother in law would be MIL not DMIL FIL, SIL, etc...
pppfftttttt!
That was a compliment and a correction so :op to you too...
I know what you meant......just teasing.
I think this thread is mis-named...I'm freezing:(
Lol... me too. I'm bundled up in a blanket, but then my personal thermostat doesn't work.
I never had anything but dear before my wife. She is an angel. The sun is out but it is still cold and the coals in my fire are still nice to curl up and enjoy. Now to walk about and photo it in the sun.
Soferdig I think your translation is the correct one (or at least My Preference)...enjoy the sun, wish you could send us some...maybe a photo?!?!
Ok - that cleared it up. So I will know what FH or FW means if I ever see that.......
What happens if your MIL is a dear? heeheehee
Nice here today, a little cool.
Glad everyone enjoyed the rainbow. We'll see what happens as this weird summer progresses.
We're taking a day off tomorrow. DH says I should have a day off (translation: HE wants to go to the casino) We haven't been for a while and we've been working so hard on the house, taking Mom with, she loves those penny machines. LOL
Soferdig....beautiful garden!!!
I'm sorry but snow in August is just wrong. Is that normal? We got snow in April and that was just wrong too, but not normal.
Oh No!! Not that four letter word. I'm not ready for fall yet, let alone s___!!
zhinusmom..... we are getting close to 300 posts.......so, you should start the new thread this time and give it the "most fitting" name!!
Sofer, your garden is beautiful!! I'm surprised at how well all of your sun plants do given that it snows .... even in summer!!!! Snow in August, i'd have to consider moving. Really I guess that the upside would be that, since the growing season is so much shorter, there would bew so much in bloom all at once! What elevation are you at? I was up at 5800' all day today, and it at least reached 60deg (but it didn't break 50 until maybe 1:30 :-( ).
Sally, I'm with you!! S___ is a four letter word and should never be said aloud!
Portland, I still don't know what FH and FW are!! Some day I'll follow the link and figure it all out!
Snow is here only a short time and it doesn't stay. December through Feb and then it is gone. Each day with the new snow on the plants and garden hardscape is most beautiful. Our garden season is March through November and being a ex Michigander I would not live anywhere else. I was in the Seattle area for 22 years and loved it but longed for cold winter days and the beauty of snow. Sorry for all the 4 letter words but I love it.
