Another Hot Spell #2

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Still up in Corvallis (Philomath, actually). We had heat yesterday with wind and storms last night. It was cool this morning and then got muggy and hot as the day progressed. Afternoon was very windy and in the evening it started thundering and lightninging voraciously. I'm still seeing flashes.

Driving home tomorrow oughta be fun . . .

Eugene, OR

Still see lightning, but it's not close by yet. Now the report is saying rain in the morning, so we'll see what happens with the siding.

redchic....Nice to see you here, thought you might be too busy to join in.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I wish the rain would get here. I alway get sinus headaches as the pressure system passes before the rain starts. I just have the bare edge of one now, and the allergy side effects of sore throat and scratchy eyes, but I think that's because I'm dosed up on Aleve to help my ankle. It's doing better today, still sore and swollen, but the pain is down to just when I walk, or turn it wrong, and even then it's often more pressure feeling then true pain.

Eugene, OR

Glad to hear you're on the mend. Just don't over do with that ankle. The work has begun, sounds like I'm living in wood shop. The cats don't know where to go, there's someone working on every wall. My scaredy cat finally went under the couch. The other is trying to figure out what's going on. So far they've found a wasp nest and carpenter ants, they came equipped with spray for both. I'll have to do some more treating for the ants after they leave tonight.

The rain is holding off, yeah! Just overcast, the workers are happy. Don't know how long it will last, they're still saying serious rain on Wednesday. But this is OR, so we'll wait til it happens. Ha,ha,ha.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

61 deg here in Silverton. Hailed this morning and have had some showers on and off. We are having some serious thunder and lightning at the moment. Was going to plant a bunch of new day lilies
today..but really do not feel like getting struck by lightning!
The A/C repairman came to fix the A/C this morning which was not working well during the heat wave. (Murphey's law) Guess I will have to wait until warmer temps now to see if it works !!

Eugene, OR

The same thing happened to us. Ours went out during that first heat wave we had, couldn't get it fixed until after, naturally.

Workers busted a water pipe, had to do a mad dash to the shut off. Poor guy feels bad, but they'll fix it. Almost sounds like this has happened before "Not to worry, we fix". He called his boss right away, then he reassured me that it would be fixed. Things happen. They're working hard. Still no rain, hope not I have no siding on my house right now.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

It is raining pretty hard here right now, and 5 minutes ago, we had thunder like I have never heard in the Seattle area before. It was very loud, and I have one dog that hates thunder and lightning, I had to give him a sedative, he was shivering so hard.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

The rain hit here about 9:15, it's still sprinkling.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I go by O'Brian's law which is--" Murphy was an optomist"

Eugene, OR

Good one Willowwind.....we had rain for about 5 min. this morning and they keep saying it's coming again tonight. Some road work was cancelled in town this morning, so maybe there was more there. But there saying on the news that there a lot of fires started by the thunder, rain is expected late tomorrow and all day Wednesday so that should help.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

80 some fires, just in my area... think the number was around 140 or so for all the willamette. could be much higher than that. But, the rain has hit. hmmph....

Eugene, OR

Here's hoping the rain allows crews to get a handle on the fires.

I'm shell shocked. I didn't know having the siding changed would sound like they were tearing my house apart! Cats finally came out, but they're really jumpy. And they want to start early tomorrow (oh no) they're trying to beat the rain.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Mother Nature should at least help a little with the fires.

Red - Good Luck!

Lebanon, OR

Here in Lebanon, while digging some co op and orders it started raining enough to get really wet but not enough to help the ground.

We lost all our power on the 9 miles of our road both sides for about 1 hour or more.

Tomorrow better not rain during the day, let it rain tonight and then make it easier to dig bearded and none bearded.

D

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Dee - Olympia lost power in parts too, for about an hour. Luckily we missed that. I can't imagine having three kids with no power.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Well, it rained real hard here for about an hour this morning, and then drizzled all day today to make the ground good and sodden. And the inside of my DWs car nice and wet. The joys of summer rains. :p

Lebanon, OR

Neither can I:(

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We got about two good rains and a lot of sprinkles. It died off about 4pm though. My concrete is dry.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Sally I know what you mean. They started in on our roof a little before seven this morning. Aside from the lunch break from 11 - 11:30 the noise did not stop until they finished at 5:15. The dog had to sit on my feet or stand guard in the hallway where she can see all entrance/exits....the cat just hid for most of the day, and is still jumping at every little sound...thankfully they are finished!!!!!

Red we will hope tonight will bring more rain and little lightening...we got a lot of fire starts up this way too...good luck with the weather and be safe.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks so much for all the good luck folks! I'm sure that plus a lot of rain is going to help bunches. The National weather service is saying that we may get 1-2" of rain between tues morning and wed. night. If that's the case.... only a couple fires will remain through THAT! Zhinus mom, you could be worse off than us if that is all that you get for rain. Hopefully you'll get some more. Strangely enough, I'm actually dreading working in a couple of days of high forties and 1-2" of rain. With any luck I'll be at a lower elevation where it's at least mid 50's.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We're supposed to get 1/2" tomorrow, no mention of amount on the other days. Wed. we have a 70% chance of rain. I'd say we could get at least an inch from this rain system.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

that's a lot of rain this time of year!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I think we could be looking at a very short summer. I feel sorry for the farmers; if we do start get fall this early, it couldn't have been a worse year for them short of a natural disaster. Does the flooding the spring count as a natural disaster?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Just looked at the extended forecast. We have three days of partly cloudy, the rest is rain, high of 81, low of 47.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I like your forcast!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I think that the flooding this spring counts as a natural disaster. Not sure why it wouldn't. But, i sure hope that's not the case of a short summer. For one, from the aspect of the farmers and crops. and for two, we had to put up with such a long winter that went into summer that I was looking forward to a summer that ran into winter! the logic seems right to me!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Not good for the farmers though. They need sun this time of year, especially with the cold, wet spring we had. I'm cool with it personally.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

the longer summer isn't good for the farmers?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I was distracted and you replied before I sent it. The extended forecast is not good for farmers.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Ahhh... makes much more sense now! (I have that same distraction----except I blame it on a really slow internet connection!) Well, I guess that all that we can do is hope. Or maybe some one knows of some sort of "weather dance" that we could all do? :-p Nite nite all

I think the best we can do is ask what ever deity we worship, in what ever way we do so, to be kind to the farmers. Another prayer to Mother Nature wouldn't be amiss either, and I wouldn't have any issues with a "sun" dance.

Eugene, OR

How about rain at night and sun during the day? When I was working in FL we could almost tell the time by the afternoon showers.

Lebanon, OR

Sally love your idea, ya all thimk ma nature would go for that...LOL

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Made it back. Drove from Corvallis to Woodinville yesterday mid-day and had almost no rain. The road was completely dry. No lightning, no thunder. Even the wind was much less than it had been. It's pretty temperate here today.

I hate to say it, but I kind of like these temps - just wish we had more sun during the day and the rain (without lightning) at night.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I agree, if Mother Nature would go along I'd be quite happy with that.

Eugene, OR

Pretty quite here tonight after all the predictions. Slight drizzle, at least the plants and lawn got something. Had to turn the sprinklers off for the siding. There's stuff all over the place. They got all the moisture barrier up today, so we'll be o.k. if it rains.

I'm loving these temps. I can get so much more done outside. Still clearing for the shed coming on Friday, if it doesn't rain too bad I can finish tomorrow. Just need to level in some more stones and pack it down.

I won't mind if Mother Nature keeps the rain to a minimum for a few more days.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

It had started to drizzles up in the hills about 4 or 5, by the time that we were leaving our projects it was definitely raining, but sort of patches between drizzle and rain. It's just a slight mist at my place now, but I bet it's ggoing to work it's way through the mountains before too. long.

Katie, you didn't have any lightning while you were in corvallis? how did you manage to miss the heat on sat?

THis picture isn't really relative, but I think it's sort of interesting because how often does a person see this many fires in such a small area??? You can only imagine what the rest of the area not immediately seen must look like!

Any guesses at how many are here?? and to top it off there are three that actually are in the picture, but I know can't be seen. Two more are behind that wall of smoke and one is directly below me.

It's always so surprising to me how similar yet different our weather can be from town to town and yet we're really still very close to each other. It was dry here in the morning and then rained/drizzled from about 4 pm, not sure if it's still raining now. We also had "real" rain (not drizzle) here overnight last night. I'm thinking the plants are liking the moisture but are a little confused by the temps (again...) . It feels like fall to me-I'm not ready for fall yet! I feel like we got cheated out of a whole month of spring so we should be able to make it up on this end before fall. ;)

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

That is an incredible picture !
