Nite Laura, sleep tight.
Another Hot Spell #2
If I hurt or have anything on my mind I am awake all night. Then up at 5:45AM to start the digging at 7:00AM. Tonight the cats did not help, lets see 4 male cats. The old fat black and white long hair which is 13 now, my son's cat who we inherited is 4 and a very super mellow fellow you can do anything to or with and he loves it, kinda a gold color with blue eyes big time hunter, the little man at 1 that the vet did not give much hope for life, and he is lover number two, then the one that picked us up for parents at 1:00 gray and white short air all get along except the old man. Usually grey and white Charlie just wants in the house long to eat drink and be merry and get a little lovein then out. Not tonight, he decided he would over the old ladies (16 year black lab) bed from 11 to now and woke me.
Well finally think I am OK to sleep...
D
redchic..I can see that close up on the cover of some magazine. What a great shot! And yes, I would have stopped for it too.
katie..one local senior center provides bus rides to their center, which has all sorts of activities. Our friend isn't able to do a lot on his own, and he has no family, so it makes it rough for him. I do some of his shopping, talk on the phone regular and we try to get him out once a month. I wish he was well enough to go to the center, but we deal with what we're dealt in life.
tils... LOVE you fur family.
Tilly... your cat's are super cute. Tilly is my fav though. Tilly reminds me of "the office cat" at my (usual) weekend job, his name is Sassy. He looks just like tilly and he's just a love bug with tons of personality. Thanks for showing all the pictures of the clan of yours. They keep you busy.
zhinu.... still, you're an amazing person to be able to take all those kids well. I don't have patience like that. Well, actually I do really well with them. But, by the end of the day I'm more worn out mentally and somewhat physically, than I ever am on a day out doing the regular job. Then on top of that, I feel like i've accomplished nothing, other than feeding or changing, by the time the day is done. And i'm right there with you on the whole night owl issue. It's hard to function around all morning birds at 7am.
Thanks so much Sally. That's sweet! If only I knew what to do with them. I'm sure that I will find something to do with them.
Irislover... why do you start digging in the garden at 7? or is that your job? I couldn't handle that well. Maybe you can give sleeping pills to the cats?? Just kidding!
Tilly - looks good!
I really like it, especially the Tylicacia, very cute! a lot of work in there. I like the scrophularia (sp?) in the back.

actually I got them mixed up. Rat is the one that looks like Sassy the office cat, not that it matters :-p
Pretty, bright DL!
Nice garden area Tilly, I love the way you put plants together.
I'm watching the US swim at the Olympics, can hardly type. Had to wait until the race was over. hee,hee
how did we do?
We're kicking butt! Phelps did it again, tied the record with 9 medals. Gymnastics team is doing phenominal for a team that is all new to the Olympics.
This is weird, I have to sign off to get new messages. I don't know why.
I love gymnastics, I wish I could watch it.
Well, that one came through o.k., maybe it's a quirky thing, happened last night too.
I love it when a young team pulls it together against the odds. Just love the underdog I guess. The US team was hoping for a bronze, could pull off the silver and giving the Chinese team (the favorites) a run for it.
I don't have cable. I haven't had cable for somewhere around 7 years. It's rare that I really miss it, but the Olympics is one of those times.
redchic, it is my job being a commerical grower if I do not dig that early and the heat hits I die...I love doing the bearded but the beardless are more pain and am doing them with more work this year, in the future will mean alot less work.
Up again late because the old man (cat) and the newest arrival (cat) still do not see i to i and they wake me up all hours. Either going in out or fighting. Will be thrilled when this part ends
Next Fri going to a trade show in Portland and then on Sun a big potluck auction of some of the biggest hybridizers newest iris, including siberians.
D
Well, the Us is on their last apparatus, the pommel horse, not their best venue. If they get through this without a major mistake, they should get at least the bronze. Japan who was expected to take silver has been making mistakes. So the pressure is on. The US is without their major player and working with an alternate, so it's a big thing and one of the guys just goofed. Oh no!
Well a second guy did a bauble, so now they're trying to hang on to the bronze. The alternate did the best routine of his life, so they hope it was enough to hang on. I can't believe they've been doing all this stuff in 90 deg weather. Of course in the arena it's cool. But the outside events must be brutal.
Well they got the bronze. Happy guys, jumping up and down. They won against all odds, almost won the silver. Another gold in women's swimming. Yeah team!
OMG. I just heard on the news that we're supposed to have at least 3 possible four days near the 100 deg. mark. starting tomorrow. YUK!! And then on top of the the possibily of thunderstorms both thursday and friday nights.

Great. And I'm headed south to Corvallis on Saturday. I was down there for the last heat wave, too. 90 is hard enough for me - I don't need 100!!
wow, how do you keep timing it like that??? it's not like was have that many 100+ have waves! Not only that, sat is the day that have the most potential for lightening to make it past where I live and down into the valley. So, you may get to catch a show while you're here. You'll never guess what I get to do at least for tomorrow and maybe on Fri. as well. I was just released off of that fire this evening and within an hour got picked for what I think will be the most interesting position i've had on a fire before! I get to be the communications person for and lookout for a fire that they ended up sending heli-repellers into. We have a fire in a rock cliff that was sitting tight for a while but has began to get out of the cliffs. It's too steep for either regular fire crews or smokejumpers to get into, so they sent in a crew that parachutes in and then reppells down around it. Since they are on a rock wall, they can't get out above the rock with their radios, so I do the radio stuff for them as well as make sure the fire that falls below them doesn't start anything. So, in essence, I'm getting paid to watch a bunch of folks rock climb for the day! I love it, even though I'll be there from 6 am to 11 pm, i still love it!

Thats sounds like to much fun for me LOL NOT!!
I'll stick to my retail job, and listen to the cranky old ladies. thank you...
We have a burn ban going on here for the last 2 weeks, its so dry. What little rain we have had is nothing, didn't even make the dirt damp.
I have a dust bowl for a driveway. And 90 today. Fun
I bet that you would find it interesting Tilly. And, you don't have any customers saying that they want a refund for something!
You might be right there, Maybe 20 years ago would sound good, I drove semi coast to coast back then, no way would I do it now, can't do them kind of things anymore, Oh to be young again. I maybe over the hill aways and still stronger than some of the young boys we have at work, I kinda scare them. ( your to old to be that strong). But I don't thats my calling to do what you do. We all have to love what we do or we wouldn't be doing it.
Tills
You can't be over the hill if your still scaring those boys and out working them!! this I know for certain. talk about feeling over the hill. One of the teenagers that I supervised on my trail crew for the last time 12 years ago, showed up at the fire that I was on. He was on this fire because he's now the Supervisor for this region of oregon dept. of forestry. Talk about feeling old! Over the radio I called him and told him that he should come and look at the states land from my view of the fire (this was just a bs reason to tell him to come over to chit chat), he asked the fire commander if he should come over to look at it, the fire commander told him he better or that I could still find a way to fire him. This guy was about 5'9" and 130 and in high school the last time that I saw him. He's now 6'3", 180, married and has a 5yr old and 2 yr old. And I'm going to feel real old if I don't go to bed. Yikes. Nighty night all. Stay cool tomorrow!
I don't like the weather forecast this week. ugh... I'm not sure which I'm looking forward to less 95 degrees or 63 degrees as high. Probably the 95, at 63 I can wrap up in a blanket and I have the side benefit of watching the rain. Boy do I hate summer heat. I'm going to be useless for the next couple days.
dang. So, does anybody know how warm it was today? I was in a pretty remote location and forgot the weather gage. So, I won't know until the news tonight. What I do know..... it felt really hot!
It was 102 in the shade on my deck. Too hot for me. We're supposed to go to a picnic tomorrow, might be ok, under some trees if the breeze is there, if not I won't be there long. It had to be now, we're getting the siding started Monday and I've got a ton of stuff to move away from the house. I'll have to go out early and get it done, it was still 100 when I set the trash out at 7:30.
Sounds like a cool job..rc, wish I was still able to do things like that. Oh well, I had my time, lots of good memories.
tillysrat you think you have a dust bowl...They have torn up the main street to our house to put in new water, sewer, electric, sidewalks, plantings....down to dirt and below...They run the water truck over it a few times a day so we alternate between dust and mud.....scheduled to go on until December...probably longer...I suppose it will be nice if it's ever finished.
I've been fussing over a highway project that's been going on for months, they keep moving our on ramp. But at least it's not next to my house. How awful for you.
We have several alternate routes that keep us out of the construction but it's a little bit longer, not much, but with todays gas prices it adds up...such a mess I don't know if I should even bother washing the car...by the end of the day you can't tell it was ever clean.
Hey mom, glad you could join us!
General - It was 90 here today and it's supposed to be 95 tomorrow. I think I might die. I was starting to have issues today, and tomorrow I have at least 2 kids from 7 am to 9 pm. Most people look forward to Fridays don't they?
Maybe I can get the 23 mo. olds mom to loan me their swimming pool, that would at least help with the heat. It's just a kiddy pool but it'll keep him cool and occupied without using as much water as I did today and I'll at least be able to get my feet cold. I taught him to water plants today. Here he is:
Zmom, So sorry that does sound so awful.
Tills
It was record-setting in Seattle yesterday - 92. Today it's supposed to be 94 - record-setting as well. The record for tomorrow is 98, so we're all hoping it won't be record-setting tomorrow.
And they are expecting the air quality to deteriorate as we're getting the hot air from the NE (according to the little arrows on the map). The day before they said the heat was going to come from California, but basically it's the ocean breeze from the west that keeps us temperate and we're not getting that right now. I suspect it's similar with you guys.
Kathy, didn't you say you were headed south? Here's the NOAA Excessive heat warning for this area, including Corvallis:
...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT
SATURDAY FOR MOST OF INLAND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST
OREGON..
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT
SATURDAY.
STRONG HIGH PRESSURE COMBINED WITH SOUTHERLY FLOW ALOFT IS
BRINGING THE HOTTEST WEATHER OF THE YEAR SO FAR FOR MOST OF
SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON. THIS HEAT WAVE IS
EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH SATURDAY...BEFORE RELENTING A BIT
SUNDAY.
IN THE INTERIOR LOWLANDS...TEMPERATURES IN MOST LOCATIONS WILL
EXCEED 100 DEGREES BOTH TODAY AND SATURDAY. SOME LOCATIONS MAY
REACH AS HIGH AS 105 DEGREES ON EITHER DAY. THE EXCEPTION WILL BE
ALONG THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR NORTH OF LONGVIEW WASHINGTON THAT
WILL LIKELY BE IN THE MID TO UPPER 90S BOTH DAYS. MOST LOCATIONS
IN THE COAST RANGE AND CASCADE FOOTHILLS ARE EXPECTED TO REACH THE
90S BOTH DAYS AS WELL...WITH SOME SPOTS BREAKING 100 DEGREES.
IN BETWEEN THE TWO VERY HOT DAYS...LITTLE RELIEF IS EXPECTED
OVERNIGHT TONIGHT. THIS WILL ESPECIALLY BE THE CASE IN DOWNTOWN
URBAN AREAS...WHERE TEMPERATURES WILL NOT FALL MUCH BELOW 70
DEGREES. OUTLYING RURAL VALLEYS WILL BE A BIT COOLER OVERNIGHT..
BUT MOST LOCATIONS ARE FORECAST TO HAVE LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE
60S OR LOWER 70S TONIGHT.
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF
DANGEROUSLY HOT TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR. THE COMBINATION OF HOT
AFTERNOONS AND LITTLE RELIEF AT NIGHT WILL CREATE A DANGEROUS
SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE LIKELY. DRINK PLENTY OF
FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN..
AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.
I did. Eeeek!!
Fortunately, I'll be driving down in a car that has air-conditioning and we're going to split the trip going to Woodland tonight and then the rest of the way to Corvallis in the morning.
The facility in which we're having the party is air-conditioned. My brother's where we're barbecuing afterward is not!! But they do have shade and a small pool.
Sunday we'll be moving furniture and packing, so I imagine that will be pretty miserable. I'm hoping it will go quickly and we can spend some time with my folks in their air-conditioned apartment.
Sue - do you have air-conditioning at home?
I remember my aunt boiling potatoes and eggs for egg-salad on a 100-degree day in Grants Pass 35 years ago. I was visiting from Alaska and found it too hot to move. She had grown up in the heat and loved it. Crazy . . .
